Ronni

Again, many thanks. I will go ahead and buy this. I don't think (at this
stage anyway) that Relative Hyperlinks and Bookmarks will effect me much, so I
should be fine for how I am using my Mac. (Of course the law of averages being
what they are, one week after I buy iWorks 09 and install it, someone will show
me some fantastic ways to use these). Oh well, I know where to go to ask for
help!

Have a great week.

Hi Peta,

I have used all versions of iWork and find each version has improved (as also
iLife versions have).

I use iWork a lot for my projects, especially Pages. I use Pages'09 to write
Technical eBooks, but still find I use Adobe Acrobat Professional v8.0 to do my
"Bookmarks" that link to certain sections on a page. Pages does let you create
Bookmark 'links' to other pages, but I have not been able to get Pages'09 to
'link' to sections (subheadings) on the same page.
I know you are supposed to be able to, but as yet I haven't found 'the way' to
do exactly what I require ;-)

Also Pages does NOT support "Relative Hyperlinks", it turns all "Relative
Hyperlinks" into "Absolute Hyperlinks" (therefore placing a http in front of
"Relative Hyperlinks", changing them to URL's). Pages'09 only supports
'Absolute' links (URL's)

This would not concern most people, but when I wrote "What to do if you loose
your Broadband Internet Connection", I needed to create a PDF with "Relative
Hyperlinks" to Mac "Help Viewer" articles, Pages could not do this, I had to
use other applications.

In Text Edit all the links work 'Absolute' & 'Relative' ... until you export to
PDF or use the Print > Save as PDF.

But yes, I would recommend iWork'09. Taken from CNET Reviews-"The Interface
tweaks make commonly used features more accessible. Flashy, eye-catching
presentations are even easier to make. iWork apps play well together with added
interoperability across the suite."

The iWork Tutorials are a good place to start learning how to use each
application.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Peta,

I would suggest you use the 'Snow Leopard Install Disc' or at least use 'Disk
Utility' and "Repair Permissions" on your iMac.
iPhoto should not have locked as it did, your iMac should not have required a
"Force Shutdown" as it did.

I don't recommend a Force Shutdown by pressing the Power Button, (I know
sometimes this might be the only way).
>
>> "turn it off at the back - and then on again after a few minutes"

Warning: Forcing a shutdown or restart will likely result in the loss of
unsaved changes in open documents. Other potential consequences include hard
disk, cache, or preferences corruption.

Some keyboard Shortcuts for Shutdown/Sleep Commands:

Control-Eject:

The dialog box "Are you sure you want to shut down?" appears with options to
Restart, Sleep, Cancel or Shut Down.

Control-Command-Eject:

Quits all applications (after giving you a chance to save changes to open
documents) and restarts the computer.

Control-Option-Command-Eject:

Quits all applications (after giving you a chance to save changes to open
documents) and shuts the computer down.

Control-Shift-Eject:

Put display to sleep

Cheers,
Ronni

 Hi Peta,

What version of iPhoto are you using?
Do you have iPhoto on an external disk or on your Mac?

 Try this anyway:
1.Click in the Finder icon (square blue smiley face) to bring up a Finder
 window.
2.It should open to your Home (if not, click on your user name on the left
 column).
3.Double click on your Pictures folder.
4.Select IPhoto Library by clicking on it once.
5.Select Get Info from the File menu (or click Command-I) and look for
Sharing & Permissions at the bottom of the Get Info window.
6.If you only see the name, click the black triangle to its left to open
 the section.
7.Select your user name on the left and set your privileges to "Read &
 Write".

You may need to click the padlock icon on the lower right and enter your
user name and password to enable the change.

Let us know what your result is please.

Hooray - hullo again Ronni

I printed off your first set of advice ready to follow the steps listed in your

Out of curiosity, I clicked on my iPhoto icon first to see if it would open.
This happened successfully, so your first piece of advice did work. Just
because there was some other unknown hiccup with the Mac I could not access
anything.

Again, thank you so much. Have a great day.

Good morning Ronni

Just after I had sent you the email below my Mac died, I just had a spinning
wheel (it had asked me to do a software download). Not the coloured ball.

This continued all night and I have only just done the old fashioned "turn it
off at the back - and then on again after a few minutes".

So of course I did not get any emails etc. until just now.

I will now try your steps. **By memory yes, I did see a "Read & Write"

panic on my part.

Hoping to let you know shortly that this has worked!

Peta,
When you unlocked the padlock ... Do you have "Read& Write" permissions?

If you do & iPhoto is on your Mac, not an external drive.

Try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while
launching iPhoto.
Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

Re: message ' iphotos locked

2010-01-01 Thread peta belczowski
Thank you Ronni for your prompt reply.

I followed your steps carefully and unlocked the padlock. Unfortunately iPhoto
still does not open, and I receive the same message

"Caution - the iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have
permission to make changes to it".

No-one except me goes into these files. I transferred all information etc
painlessly from my earlier Mac 10.6.2 about a month ago, and have had no
problems since. I have edited photos, made slideshow etc. in the usual way.

My version of iPhotos shows as V.8.1.1. I always carry out updates when
prompted.

Thanking you for your efforts.

Peta

5.Select Get Info from the File menu (or click Command-I) and look for Sharing
& Permissions at the bottom of the Get Info window.
6.If you only see the name, click the black triangle to its left to open the
section.
7.Select your user name on the left and set your privileges to "Read & Write".

You may need to click the padlock icon on the lower right and enter your user
name and password to enable the change.

Let us know what your result is please.

Cheers,
Ronni

message ' iphotos locked

2010-01-01 Thread peta belczowski

Help.

I now have (for about 2 months) a Mac OS X Version 10.6.2, running on Snow
Leopard - (which I did not know until today - when I foolishly declared that
Snow Leopard had not caused me any problems).

I have not used the Mac a great deal lately, but have downloaded my Christmas
photos.

I just clicked onto iPhotos in the dock to look at my photos, but immediately
received a spinning ball and a blank iPhoto box, and eventually a message which
flashed quickly on the screen along the lines of "iPhotos is locked" - it was
too quick for me to take notes. A report was sent to Apple.

How would I reinstate my iPhotos (which is the main reason for having my Mac).

Thanking you in anticipation,

Peta
