Farewell Don Knotts

2006-02-26 Thread Eric Lowry
Thanks to all who've sent stories and remembrances of our dear Barn. With
so many eloquent words already sent to the digest I can't begin to write
their equal. I shall simply thank God for Don Knotts. Thanks for a gentle
spirit, countless laughter, and a life well lived. My prayers for all who
loved Don and were touched by his gift.

RE: Barney

2006-02-26 Thread Tony Tammy Sinclair
Though I mainly just read the digest these days, I had to come forth and
add my condolences in Don's passing. As many have said, I knew this day
would come, but still sad, nonetheless.

I am so thankful that Barney Fife will always remain with us...and for
our kids to enjoy, too.

The tears on my pillow bespeak the pain in my heart...

We are Barney, and Barney was Us

2006-02-26 Thread Lori Heine
I think one of the reasons Barney appealed to so many of us to such a deep
degree was that there's a little bit of Barney in each of us.

We all shoot ourselves in the foot once in a while, so we're each better off
keeping a single bullet in our pocket.

Who among us does not crave praise, and have an ego that sometimes runs amok?
Who doesn't have a need to be hailed as a hero -- even though, in our moment of
danger, we were scared to death?

When we mean well, but things turn out a mess, we count on our friends to
love us anyway. Just as Barney did.

Life is full of crazy characters -- some almost as goofy as the people of
Mayberry. We get so caught-up in being the best deputy (doctor, lawyer, Indian
chief) we can be that we don't realize we're just one of the goofies. What
could be more Barney?

That pan of cashew fudge in front of the doctor show means the world to us
every Thursday. No matter what similar rituals may matter in our own lives,
just knowing old Barney will be curling up with Thelma Lou again this week
gives us comfort. It's the same feeling we get every time we hear The Andy
Griffith Show's opening theme.

Barney may be gone, now, from this vale of tears, but he's always watching
The Andy Griffith Show right alongside of us. He's right there with Thelma Lou
-- and that pan of cashew fudge.

  R.I.P., Barney...

Andy Griffith said I have lost a good friend, when told about Don's death. I
think all of us who are fans whether we have ever met him in person or not feel
the same way. There was that quality about the modest very talanted man that
lent itself to that feeling as we watched his appearance on the show, his
movies his other hit show Three's company, but most of all as he played our
beloved Barney. My heart goes out to Andy, Harvey others who had the

A Word About Don

2006-02-26 Thread Bob Bravetti
I maybe look at things a bit differently. You see, four of my closest
childhood friends all died before their 51st birthday. Don Knotts
(wasn't his first name Jesse?) made it to 81 and that's great. I hope I
make it that far. Had he died 30 years ago, we wouldn't have gotten to
see him in Return To Mayberry, Pleasantville, reunion shows and other
projects. We're lucky that Don made it to 81. We're lucky Andy is
still alive, and we're lucky for the magic of video. Deputy Fife is
showing Asa good bullet maintenance right now.

Goodbye, Don

2006-02-26 Thread Duane Malcolm
My son and myself were shocked and saddened to hear of Don`s passing yesterday.
We watched our own tribute to him all day. Wade was more upset than I ever
imagined a 11 year old could be over a man that most kids his age know nothing
about. That in my mind would make Don smile that his comedy could reach such an
age group that is more interested in violence and sex than true comedy and
compassion. He also wanted me to add to the nick name list that Barney started,
Edgar J. Master`s Eddy as Barney called him. He was the First truck driver
to come through Check Point Chickie We will miss you Don

I feel the same way. I worked late yesterday and heard about Don's
passing on the radio. I went home and as I was telling my wife about it
I was leaking some tears too. What a great man he was, and what an
influence on my life. I, too, knew this day would come, but I didn't
want it to ever happen. I am sad, very sad.

We will meet but we will miss him,
There will be his vacant chair;
We will linger to caress him
While we breathe our evening prayer;
When a year ago we gathered,
Joy was in his mild blue eye,
But a golden chord is severed,
And our hopes in ruin lie.
CHORUS:
We will meet, but we will miss him,
There will be his vacant chair,
We will linger to caress him
While we breathe our evening prayer.
At our fireside, sad and lonely,
Often will the bosom swell
At remembrance of the story,
How our noble father fell;
How he strove to bear our banner
Through the thickest of the fight;
And uphold our country's honor,
In the strength of manhood's fight.
True, they tell us wreaths of glory
Ever more will deck his brow,
But this soothes the anguish only,
Sweeping o'er our heartstrings now.
Sleep today, Oh early fallen,
In thy green and narrow bed.
Dirges from the pine and cypress
Mingle with the tears we shed.

There will be one vacant chair.
We shall linger to caress him
While we breathe our ev'ning prayer.
When one year ago we gathered,

Now the golden cord is severed,

Farewell My Friend

I lost a friend today.

One who I have never met.

Yet he brought me joy.

His

Laughter

Every moment we shared.

His stature was small

Yet his heart was so large.

Simple, honest, and humble.

His

Smile

Spread more joy than one could know.

He picked me up

Whenever I was down.

He helped to ease my pains.

His

Humor

Had known no malice or spite.

His friendship was pure

Asking nothing in return.

Kindness and empathy for others.

His

Presence

Brought joy to a troubled world.

Farewell my friend and God speed

We will meet again.

His laughter shall shine above.

His

Memory

Forever a part of our souls.

2006-02-26 Thread BeAStooge
Personal remembrances of Don Knotts...

Seven years ago, he was starring in a play at one of the Atlantic City
hotels, and I bought tickets to a Saturday matinee. A lifelong fan of his work,
particularly THE STEVE ALLEN SHOW and THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, I figured I had
nothing to lose by sending him a letter, c/o the hotel, inviting him to dinner
after the show. I really didn't expect an answer, and when several weeks
passed,
and I had practically forgotten about it.

The night before my ticket date, I came home from work... and Don Knotts
himself is on my answering machine! He couldn't accomodate time for dinner, but
he
invited me to visit him in his dressing room after the performance. Needless
to say I made the appointment, and although he only had about 10 minutes to
spare (his health was frail even then, and he napped between performances), he
made time for me, pictures, autographs, and pleasant conversation. (Yes, I
saved that telephone cassette tape.)

Several more occasions the past few years, I saw him at the Hollywood
Collector Shows in Los Angeles. He and his fiance remembered me from the AC
visit,
and always found time for pleasantries.

One thing at those shows, it's Hollywood. No one really takes much notice of
the celebrities as they arrive, and this particular show generally hosts
approximately 75 celebrities. BUT every time Don showed up, attendees and other
celebrities would stop to acknowledge his entrance... once I saw a standing
ovation that brought Don to tears. Don always had the longest line.

I'm an annual attendee at Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy NC. Of all the GRIFFITH
actors and crew who have been guests at this event, not one has had less than
personal and professional praise for Don Knotts! And these guests have
included the Dillards, Maggie Peterson, Betty Lynn, Howard Morris, George
Lindsey,
Harvey Bullock, Jack Elinson, James Best, Elinor Donahue, Earle Hagen... and
some guy named Andy Griffith.

Don Knotts was a regular guy with a great deal of talent. He was fortunate to
meet Andy Griffith and the production staff of Danny Thomas Sheldon
Leonard, and they created a cultural icon known as 'Barney Fife.'

Mr. Knotts always appreciated his fans, and went more than the extra mile to
acknowledge them.

I will miss Don Knotts. But, I have 'Barney Fife,' 'Nervous Man,' and his
movie characters to always remember him by.

Atta boy Luther!

2006-02-26 Thread Albert Acevedo
Rest in Peace, Don. You will ALWAYS be one of the finest. Good memories and
great laughs you've given me and my family over all these years and I thank
you whole heartily for them. I send sincere condolences to the Knotts family
for your loss, and I want you to know that Don was loved by me and by my
family. Don is with God now and will be taken care of for all eternity. (I
love you, Barney!)

Sincerely,

Alberto A. Acevedo (MPk.)
