Quoting the entire Digest
Folks, Some email clients quote the ENTIRE Digest to which you "Reply" and as a result your message will cause a brand new issue of the Digest to be created which contains a copy of the one you replied to. Please turn off the automatic quoting feature of your email tool so this does not occur in the future. I try to catch these but I've been messin' up lately with my "approving" of messages. I let through a "junk" e-mail a few days back and now I messed up on the "quoted" Digests. That was my fault...not AuntBee1's but in the future if all of y'all would try and make sure you don't quote entire issues of the Digest, it'll make my job a little easier. Deputyin'
And another thing about when Barney started "deputyin'": In "Irresistable Andy", Barney specifically says that he'd been a deputy going on a year and a half. Now, since that episode was on 31st of October, 1960, then we can presume that he started "deputyin'" around May, 1959. John of SoCal "Off-duty? Re: Towns like Mayberry
I live in Ephrata in Lancaster County, PA. It is a lot like Mayberry in that we buy our greens at roadside stands ( the legal ones ) and we have band concerts in the park on Sundays. We have a local paper that comes out once a week on Wednesdays ( unless you subscribe in which case you get it in your mail on Thursday ). I don't lock my doors or my car most of the time and until recently, I had worked for the phone company where they would have been lucky to find someone as competent as Sarah as an operator. They was a town meeting recently where on the agenda was a man complaining about his neighbor's goat eating his shrubbery. " You know, you people who live in small towns really have it made!" Mr. Schwump
I think I finally solved the Mystery of Mr. Schwump. I am reading the World War II spy mystery Double Cross Blind by Joel N. Ross. The Germans have a double agent and they are setting up a meeting. They are to meet - now are you ready for this ? - at the All Souls Church. Now that explains why Mr. Schwump never speaks in Mayberry. And I am sure I have seen him at the All Souls Church. In fact I believe he was at Andy and Helen's wedding. So Barney wasn't far off when he suspected Ed Sawyer of being a spy. He had the right idea, but he just had the wrong person at the wrong time. Maybe this will put to rest the fascinating Mystery of Mr. Schwump. And I would not be a bit surprised if he answered to Herr Schwump. Kenneth G. Replacement discs
Just thought I would mention that I sent my letter to Paramount last Monday requesting the replacement discs with laugh tracks for season four, and they arrived by DHL on Friday! Four days is fast, especially since I'm in eastern Illinois! I've watched the first disc. Now I'm ready for the second. I have to admit that I prefer the laugh track included, especially in scenes where Barney does a slow burn (such as in "Opie the Birdman"), which seem just a little odd without the laughter. Re: Towns like Mayberry...
I grew up in a Mayberry like town...Bethpage,TNWe had one school that served grades one through eighth but later on changed to just six grades. When you got old enough to go to high school you had to ride the bus to Bethpage, get on another bus and go to the high school in the next big town. We had a constable, two small grocery stores, a little post office, a garage, and a small bank. The store where we went had 2 gas pumps and you could buy stuff on credit!!! We also had a party line and I used to listen to the old ladies talking all the time until they heard me breath and told me to get off. Oh, if only things were still that simple. Bethpage is still that small but now they have their own Christmas parade. Small towns
Hello everyone! I enjoy your comments on our favorite show! As far as small towns still existing (ala Mayberry), there are still plenty of those Mayberry types here in Montana! Choteau, Augusta, Fairfield, and the list goes on. Everyone knows everybody and nobody locks their doors. Neighbors helping neighbors; high schools sports still cause the whole town (just about) to stand and cheer!; and the sheriff and his deputy(ies) are related to just about everyone around. I know Montana's not a southern state, but there are still many towns here that have our favorite show's appeal! Happy Mother's Day to you all, and Aunt Bee, too!
