Mayberry in Tuscaloosa
I just got in a little while ago from Mayberry in Tuscaloosa. Kenneth Junkins and everyone at Eagles Wings did such a fabulous job putting this together, and David Browning, Allan, Tim, Paul, Jamie, Jeff, Betty Lynn, Keith Thibideaux and his friend Gary, and PEG (David's lovely wife, Patty has created quite a character!)...and the VW Boys... I am about brain dead and know I am leaving someone out - but the cast was all just right on the mark. It was really a good weekend and everyone went out of their way to make it a great weekend. I will try to do a better write up when I am freasher, but wanted to extend my thanks to everyone involved in putting together the Tuscaloosa Mayberry weekend. Kenneth, thank you so much for that message telling about your father. I, too, do not see anything funny about the portrayal of someone drunk on tv or the movies. Neither my father or my husband had a problem with alcohol but I have a son who does and my brother did besides other relatives on my mother's side of the family. Your words were so true, we never see the effects of Otis's drinking on his family or others. I am so glad, as you say, that things have changed more in the entertainment industry as to portraying this as a funny situation. It is not. Deputy Warren was related to Floyd the Barber. Floyd was his uncle. Seems that Warren's mother was Floyd's sister. She must have hooked up with a high northerner though since Warren said he was from Boston. The person related to Clara Edwards was Fertie. He was the nephew who played the accordion. He was to accompany Clara and Aunt Bee when they were going to sing "My Hometown" to Keevy Hazelton at the motel. I found this old songbook and let me list the songs in it! Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms Flow Gently, Sweet Afton In the Gloaming Santa Lucia The Little Brown Church In The Vale Ole Dan Tucker AND YESJUANITA! The name of the book is 357 Songs We Love To Sing, and it was copyrighted in 1938 by the Hall and McCreary ( they must be from somewheres else) company. Amazing to find that many songs that were used in the show in this one book.
