Andy and Barney cousins

2007-04-17 Thread King of Mayberry
Aunt Bee is not Barney's aunt. We discover this in "Aunt Bee's Invisible Beau"
when Andy and Barney are discussing what Andy should do about Barney
discovering that Orville Hendrick has a son and is married. Barney says, "If
she were my aunt"

So they must be cousins on Andy's mother's side. Or, of course, they could be
distant cousins, such as second or third cousins, but just drop the second or
third part.

That's my theory anyway. What's your theory??

Ken,

I believe the third reference to cousins is in the first episode - The
New Housekeeper - had Andy and Barney talking about being
cousinswhen Andy was waxing the car..

Cousin Barney

2007-04-17 Thread Brearry
Now I'm jumping to conclusions here, but I always thought that
Barney was related to Andy on his mother's side...

The reason being, is that Barney is never referred to by Aunt Bee
as her nephew or cousin or a kin of any kind. And though Aunt
Bee and Barney obviously liked each, I never felt they "family"
close as relatives usually are. And lastly, in the episode where
the relatives come to visit from Lake Charles, Barney makes no
  references to "his" cousin's visiting

Well,,,back to my bucket. I'll think on it some more...

the episode in which

By the way. What exactly does Thelma Lou do for a living? I've heard her

cousins

2007-04-17 Thread Paul Mulik
>>> Now for my next question. How are Barney and Andy cousins? Aunt Bee
>>> (Taylor) must be Andy's Aunt on his Father's side. Barney calls her
Aunt Bee, but so does everyone else in town. Does anyone know the answer? I
sure don't.

Let's analyze the situation. If Andy and Barney are FIRST cousins (which we
don't know for sure, but let's assume this is the case) then there are four
possibilities:

A: Andy's father is the brother of Barney's father
2: Andy's father is the brother of Barney's mother
c: Andy's mother is the sister of Barney's father
IV: Andy's mother is the sister of Barney's sister

We can rule out A immediately, because if that were the case then Andy and
Barney would have the same last name.

As you pointed out, Aunt Bee's last name is Taylor, so she must be the
sister of Andy's father. We learn in "Aunt Bee's Invisible Beau" that Aunt
Bee is not really Barney's aunt, because when Barney is trying to rile Andy
to action, he says "... I can't figure you out, Andy. If Aunt Bee was my
aunt, I wouldn't be staring out of windows, I'd drive straight over the Mt.
Pilot " From this, we can rule out number 2, because is 2 were the case
then Aunt Bee really would be Barney's aunt (Andy's dad, Barney's mom, and
Aunt Bee would all be siblings).

Thirdly, when Andy is about to meet Barney's cousin Virgil for the first
time, Barney says Virgil is from his mother's side of the family. This
implies that Andy does not know any of the relatives of Barney's mother, so
this rules out IV.

So, unless somebody comes up with a better analysis, I'm sticking with
option c: Andy's mother and Barney's father are siblings.

"AUNT" BEE

2007-04-17 Thread Nancy Loadholt
I think that Aunt Bee really was Andy's blood relative. But calling ladies aunt
even when they aren't blood relatives is a Southern thing, I think. I have two
dear ladies that are like a second Mother and Grandmother to me and I refer to
both of them as "aunt". It's really a term of endearment and respect and
sometimes has nothing to do with being a relative.

Tuesday's Events

2007-04-17 Thread Ken Anderson
My wife Linda and I just returned from our third overnight stay at the
Taylor Home Bed and Breakfast. We had a wonderful time as usual and we met
some delightful small town folks at the Clear Lake Library where I did a
presentation. Unfortunately our visit was saddened by the tragic events at
Virginia Tech. How ironic that during a time of a terrible national tragedy
we were able to escape to Mayberry and for twenty four hours be shielded
from the bitter realities of today's world. Isn't that what Mayberry is all
about? A place where we can go to find release from society's pressures and
demands. A place where there may be discord, but certainly no hate. A place
where the only time you hear gunfire is when Andy is shooting crows or
Barney is putting another hole in the courthouse floor or ceiling. My heart
and prayers go out for all the people who were affected by the events at
Virginia Tech. May the true spirit of Mayberry somehow find its way into
all those unfortunate people and may it help them to still find the goodness
and love that abounds in so many people and in so many places.

RE: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 8, Issue 107

2007-04-17 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
I don't recall her wearing slacks ever, but there was one episode
where she wore her hair down. I think it was in "Barney Mends a Broken
Heart." She should have worn it down more. She looked cute and
younger.<<<

She also wore her hair up in a scarf once...when Barney came over to
talk to her about Bob Rogers, and how he thought Andy was grooming him
to replace him.

I think Thel left the slack -wearing to Peggy and Flora.

>>>Anyway, when the camera shows Andy & Opie, Andy's hair is parted on
the left side. Then, when the camera shows a close up of Andy, his hair
is parted on the right side.<<<

That's either a case of the film getting reversed--or...The actor in the
hair (sorry couldn't resist.)

>>> Barney calls her Aunt Bee, but so does everyone else in town. Does
anyone know the answer? I sure don't.<

Interesting comment, but not every one does call her Aunt Bee. It
seems that most of her Lady friends do not (Clara, Tilly etc. "Oh Bee,
it is Heaven on Earth") Also, her various boyfriends do not (the ones
I can recall at the moment at least.) Any else???

Now, you'd probably have to take this question to Floyd as the final
authority, but in scenes where Andy's part jumps from one side of his head
to another, I'd have to guess that the negatives got reversed in one shot.
Don't you have to cut hair to part on one side or another? You can't just
decide one morning to move your part. At least I can't.
