I think our Barney needs to give that purple guy some singing lessons. :-)

The Andy Griffith Show/The Merv Griffin Show

2007-04-23 Thread brodahaver
People who aren't true fans of Andy, get Andy's name mixed up with Merv's.
SCTV Network 90 had a parody skit that mixed both of the personalities. It was
titled 'The Merv Griffith Show' and aired on July 10, 1981. Merv Griffin was
dressed in Andy's sheriff's uniform.

40 Acres on Lucy DVD

2007-04-23 Thread Janet Anderson
I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but the 40 Acres lot makes an
appearance on the latest "I Love Lucy" DVD set. (Actually, it's technically
the one-hour "Lucy-Desi Comedy Hours" that aired after the 6-season run of "I
Love Lucy" ended, but it's packaged as "I Love Lucy, Seasons 7, 8 & 9.") On
the second disc is an extra 40-minute show using Desi, Lucy, Vivian Vance, and
Bill Frawley that was produced for distribution to Westinghouse retailers
(Westinghouse was the show's new sponsor).

In this show, Desi takes their local Westinghouse retailer on a tour of Desilu
Studios, including an aerial view from a helicopter. Desi points out 40 Acres,
which the helicopter flies right over. It is a great view of the lot--very
clear and up close! You can see that many of the buildings were just hollow
shells. When I looked for the Taylor house, I realized that it wasn't there.
(Of course, this was filmed in 1958, I think, before TAGS began.) The Taylor
house and one or two others on that street were not yet built, obviously. But
you can see All Soul's Church, the Court House, and other locations very well.
I paused it frequently and used the zoom button for more careful inspection,
then backed it up to view all over again!

So if you have this Lucy DVD set or are planning on getting it, be sure to
watch this special bonus show because you'll get a view of 40 Acres that's
probably different from any you've seen before!

>>>The question I have is: Where did that song come from that she was
>>>singing? think it goes something like this"Tootsie goodbye...don't
>>>cry..." lol

That's an old song from the 1920s, sung by Al Jolson (and many others, even
Star Trek's Brent Spiner!*) Aunt Bee and Opie only sing the chorus; the
verse goes like this:

Yesterday I heard a lover sigh, "Goodbye, oh me, oh my!"
Seven times he got aboard his train,
and seven times he hurried back to kiss his love again, and tell her,
"Toot-toot, Tootsie "
(etc.)

Pianos are my business, and I don't know if Frances Bavier could really play
the piano, but she definitely wasn't playing it in that scene, adult dose or
no adult dose. Except for the times Andy picks out a few notes in "Barney's
Physical" and the rudimentary stuff from Opie's piano lessons, there's only
one actor who actually plays the piano onscreen in a TAGS episode. Anybody
know who it is?

Barney the Bluebird

2007-04-23 Thread ctygrl821
 HI fellow TAGS Fans,

Just a little story of Barney the Bluebird out in my back yard. Our yard is a
haven for wild birds, and on occasion we get eastern bluebirds to our feeders
and bird boxes.
This spring we are fortunate to have a pair of these beautiful birds nesting
in a little ceramic house on top of a post out back. This little house was
placed there after the estate sale of my beloved parent's home was completed. I
found this bird house in their back yard, all dirty and full of spider webs
(uhoh Gomer, look out).
I brought it home, cleaned it out, and placed it out on top of that post.

A few weeks ago, a very persistent male bluebird began soaring around my bay
window off my kitchen. He was "attacking" the windows, darting around each of
the three windows, chattering and scolding that "OTHER" bird in the reflection!
I nicknamed him Barney due to his persistence and constant "patrolling" of my
entire back yard.
When not patrolling the windows, he's atop a branch in an old sweet gum tree
overseeing the area. "Checkpoint chickee" perhaps? Most definitely!

Only a day or so after the patrolling began...there appeared the female
bluebird, now known affectionately as Thelma Lou!
They have set up housekeeping in that ceramic house and we all await the
arrival of little blue "Fifes".
Wonder if Thel will let Barney have that den with the bookcases and leather
chairs? HMMM. Bet she will if she's entertaining the girls occasionally in the
living room.

Guess we'd better get a bigger post out back

 To be continued...

Barney's allofactory glands.

2007-04-23 Thread Barbara Mylott
In defense of Barney and his inability to smell the 'white lightening' I've
tried the stuff once myself. Once and only once. It looks just like water and
it had no order like regular alcohol. Like barney I took a few good gulps not
having been told of it's potency or even what it was. About 5 or 10 seconds
later it hit me like a dirty elephant, just like it did for barney. I haven't
had it since (about 20 years ago) and never will. But he should have detected
the liqueur in the water cooler.
I agree about the way t.v. Land is pulling away from the wholesome shows of
the past. There are so many I don't understand why they can't stay with the
program, figuratively speaking.
And Mayberry wouldn't have a candle light ceremony because those things
don't happen in Mayberry (VT massacre).

Thelma Lou's occupation

2007-04-23 Thread Paul Mulik
>>>Still wondering if anybody knows what Thelma Lou's job was? Career
>>>office girl in Mayberry? Do you suppose she worked for the County?

We're never told what Thelma Lou's occupation is; we don't even know for
sure that she HAS a job at all (maybe she has a rich daddy?). The only clue
is in "Man in the Middle." Barney is trying to get Thelma Lou and Helen to
both come to the courthouse at the same time so they can talk things out,
and during this scene we hear the following dialoge:

Barney: Want some coffee? How's everything at the office?
Thelma Lou: I just dropped everything at the office to come over and find
out ... (at this point she is interrupted by Helen's entrance).

Later in the same scene, Thelma Lou twice says, "I have to get back to the
office." So she is probably a secretary, receptionist, file clerk,
something like that. These would have been common jobs for a single woman
in that day.

Thelma Lou, employment.

2007-04-23 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
>>>Still wondering if anybody knows what Thelma Lou's job was? Career
office girl in Mayberry?
Do you suppose she worked for the County? Dennis<<<

Dennis I have often wondered about this as well.
I think she works at a small insurance office in town. Here is my
Logic.
What kind of offices do we see or remember in small towns. Governmental
offices, Utilities offices, Insurance Offices, and offices associated
with bigger Businesses.
We know that Violet Rose Schumacher worked out at the Coal Company.
We know that if she worked at an office at the School, she would have
known Helen from work, and that doesn't seem to be how they meet.
If she worked for a governmental office, Andy and Barney would surely
have mentioned that or encountered her in some way. (getting an
appointment with the Mayor or City Council etc).
She could have worked for the Dept. of Water and Power--but again, they
would have come across her there.
The Phone company appeared to have no employees except Sara, so we can
rule out utilities.
It must have been right in town, not out on the fringe near the Diner,
and you-know--Juanita.

There is one other possibility. Some of you know that I believe Mr.
Schwamp ran the local funeral home. (Often dressed in suit, reassuring
nod etc.) Perhaps she worked in the office of that funeral home.
Remember that Barney met her at Wilton Blaire's Funeral. That could
have been her reason for being there. Perhaps the small funeral home
also often used a church for their larger services--and thus the need to
help Edgar Coleman out with the Hymn Books???

Just a possibility. We see Ed, who later became Howard, as the
Insurance Salesman and Claim agent, but Thelma Lou could have been in
the background handling the paperwork.

Maybe he thought it was wellwater or something. The water at my
grandmother's house in the country came from a well and had a twang to its
taste to where
some alcohol probably could've been in it and I wouldn't have noticed. And I
am familiar with alcohol, having used it (among other things) in cooking.
