Single Ladies, Sawyer and Mayberry or burry

2009-04-02 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)

Don't forget how many nice single ladies there were when Barney tried to
fix up Andy. I believe there were enough for a softball team!

I'm on my writer's view kick again, but I have to say that they often
would exaggerate personalities or circumstances for the sake of the
story. Would it have been as interesting if Thelma Lou only had 3 girls
over? No, it made a better story that there was a whole room full and
Jeff picked Thelma Lou.

I watched an old "Newhart" episode the other night on Hulu.com. This
voice sounded so familiar and I could not place who it was. When I
watched the credits, it hit me.. William Lanteau..Ed Sawyer (stranger in
Town) as an old funny bald man (who appeared as Chester in over 12
Newhart Episodes). Watch Newhart and look for Chester. I used to joke
that that episode, Stranger in Town, had such a unique cast of
characters including the one-time Floyd, George Saferly, and Lucy
Matthews that Ed took his friends and started his own new town called
Sawyerberry. In reality, Lanteau went on to star in 71 different shows
and movies. The TAGS appearance was one of his first half-dozen
appearances. Check him out..he's no stranger now

Does anyone say May-burry instead of Mayberry besides Mayor Pike and
Gentleman Dan? Just a quirk I've noticed.

BATS!

2009-04-02 Thread terry mayew
"Ghosthunters" may all be fake, I don't know; but last night Steve and Kris
were crouching in a blind panic because bats were all around them---they
knew, like Barney, that bats will lay eggs in your hair and you'll go
crazy! (My Grandmother swore that was true)

Mayberry Creek

2009-04-02 Thread terry mayew
To be accurate, (I tried to study accounting), Mayberry Creek, Virginia
includes a church and some houses, but they are scattered around way back in
the woods. Did anybody notice that the English Chancellor of the
Exchequer's name is Darling? (And he looks just like Mr. Bean, with white
hair, from that superb English comedy show, but that's trivial
trivialities).

Rachel Ray Show

2009-04-02 Thread Robert James

I normally don't watch the Rachel Ray Show but one of my modern day heroes,
Bill O'Reilly, was on there today. Many people don't like him and I know he
wouldn't fit in in Mayberry but as he likes to say, he watches out for the
folks, and I like that! Anyway, Rachel told a story about something stupid that
a police officer had done and Bill referred to him as Barney Fife. Now that's
not watching out for the Mayberry folks! RMJ

Ad Libs

2009-04-02 Thread Mari Ellen Ryan
Dear Kind Behind the Eyes and All.

I don't know for sure about ole Barn and Andy but I read an interview with
Hal Smith where he mentioned "ad libbing".in particular he was referring
to the episode of Aunt Bee the Warden. He said he added in such moves as
raising the ax to Aunt Bee behind her back when she points to the woodpile
and says "get to it!"

I'm sure there are references this this in the books written on
TAGS.hope this helps

Re: Mayberry single girls

2009-04-02 Thread Ben Sandifer
DeLayne,

You may be on to something here. Not only were there many single girls in "The
Farmer Takes A Wife," but let's not forget about "A Wife For Andy."
Barney brought in so many prospects for Andy that there was even talk about
starting a girls' softball team. According to the calculatin' machines down at
the bank - and those machines are real good - that'd have to be at least 10.
And of course, the Darlings were less than impressed with the choice of
prospective husbands for little Andylina - even with that fine dowry as part of
the deal.

ad libs

2009-04-02 Thread Paul Mulik
>>>  When Barney puts the dogs into the car and goes around to the other side,
>>>he tells the Airedale, "Move over, I'm driving."
That seems like an ad lib to me ... Could there be episodes with ad libs?

I expect that's exactly what happened; the dog was in the way, so Don Knotts ad
libbed that line.

According to George Lindsey, the actors were never allowed to ad lib; however
others such as Hal Smith and Howard Morris did a lot of ad libbing on set.
Howard Morris would make up all of Ernest T.'s rhymes (such as "if a duck
stands still, you can catch him by the bill"), and Hal Smith loved to
improvise. For example, when Otis took Barney's sobriety test in A Plaque for
Mayberry, he was supposed to touch his fingertips together as Barney ordered,
but he thought it would be funnier if he pinched Barney's nose, so that's what
he did and it stayed in.

I expect it had to do with the preferences of different directors. I don't know
anything about directing TV episodes, but I do know about directing
musicians. There are some members of my orchestra who do a great job when
playing ad lib solos, while other members do much better if they stick with the
printed notes on the page. I suppose it's the same way with actors speaking
their lines.

Paul Mulik

P.S. It is very common for scripts to include "ad lib greetings" at the
beginning of a scene or "ad lib goodbyes" at the end of a scene, but that's
different. For example, if Helen and Thelma Lou were at Andy's house talking
with the Taylor family, when the girls left everybody would just say something
like "bye now" or "have a nice evening" or "you take care" or whatever. None of
that would be written into the script, the actors would just make something up,
and if they did multiple takes it would be different every time. It sounds much
more natural that way.

Single Girls in Mayberry

2009-04-02 Thread Ken Anderson
It really comes as no surprise to me that there are so many pretty single
girls in Mayberry, After all, look who the eligible men are. There's
Goober, Gomer, Howard, Floyd, Asa, Old Man Kelsey, old Jud, Ernest T., the
Darling Boys, Mr., Schwump, Fred Goss, and of course the guy with the cute
button nose, the guy with the twitching muscles, and the fellow with the
long eye lashes. Granted there are those good looking farm boys next to
Frankie Flint, but other than them the pickens in Mayberry are rather slim.
I mean the two big hunks, Andy and Barney, are spoken for.

Congratulations to "Fluffy"

2009-04-02 Thread Jeff Koontz

If you've been to Mayberry Days, you've likely heard some great fiddling from
Jim "Vip" Vipperman (or as The Mayberry Deputy likes to call him, "Fluffy".)
Congratulations go out to him for being named the 2009 Brown Hudson Folklore
Award winner.

The full article is in Thursday's edition of http://www.mtairynews.com/

Mayberry Days isn't complete unless David Browning rubs Vip's head and Floyd
comes out and takes a little off the top.

Thelma Lou and her magic trick

2009-04-02 Thread jflockerzie
Have any of you ever seen Thelma Lou's magic trick?
I've noticed this before and I did again last night. It cracks me up
every time I see it (I'm amused easily OK).

Now I don't know if this is on the DVD, I've never checked. I'm thinking
it's just a result of a scene being cut out on TVLand.
Anyway, in the episode "Farmer Takes a Wife" when Andy, Barney, and Jeff
Pruitt are all over at Thelma Lou's house during the hen party, Thelma
   Lou does her magic trick.
You see Thelma come into the room to drop off a tray of drinks/food, she
says hi to Jeff and then she walks back into the kitchen. You never see
her walk back in to the living room but poof she magically reappears
there the next second or so.

My husband just laughed while I made sure he watched. me saying
"OK OK, here she comes with the tray. she sets the tray down.now
watch...she goes into the kitchen...she doesn't came back in but
look there.poof.. she's back in the living room. How does she
   do that "
He said maybe there's another way back in but I've looked I don't see
   one.

Ya all think that maybe we've found out what Thelma Lou's job is a
   magician???
