When Andy and Barney and the other officers are hunting the crook in BARNEY

Mayberry Cafe

2009-07-09 Thread Johnna Bixenman

We had the pleasure of dining at the Mayberry Cafe in Danville, Indiana
yesterday afternoon on our way through the area (OK, it was our lunchtime
destination driving back from vacation). We got to town before they opened
and were walking around the square when we met some other out of town folks
who were also killing time before lunch. We invited?them to join us and
shared?stories like we were old friends. Something about Mayberry that can
help create those special moments in life.
?
Jeff

I'm taking my mom to Nashville Friday and Saturday to enjoy a special meal
at Stockyard Steakhouse, look through the Country Music Hall of Fame, attend
the Mike Snider Show Saturday afternoon, and have front row seats at the
Grand Ole Opry Saturday night. Sunday we're heading north to the
Indianapolis area for our sixth or so visit to the Mayberry Café before
heading back home to Missouri. We always try to incorporate Mayberry into
our vacations whenever possible. Can't wait. Maybe we'll be lucky and talk
to folks like Jeff did.

Me? I'm heading to Nashville.

Got to thinking today. How can you tell you are watching an episode from
the first season of Andy. A few ways:

1. Andy and Barney are cousins.

2. The squad car is a 1960 Ford Fairlane (in fact that narrows it down to
the first half of the first season).

3. Andy makes more mistakes than usual dealing with/understanding women.
In fact, he makes more mistakes than usual, period (remember the bit about
investing in the folk song album?).

4. Crabby department store owner Ben Weaver seems to be all up in
everyone's business.

5. The shadows on the lettering in the opening and closing credits appear
to be thicker, and the letters themselves are in a slightly bigger font
during the closing credits

6. If you know your cars, look for a 1957 DeSoto Fireflite to pop up a
lot in the background.

7. Is it just me or does Andy seem to have thicker than usual hair during
this season?

Doctors

2009-07-09 Thread kim
I think it was Doc Andrews that Andy advised Aunt Bee to visit before she
decided to try Indian Elixir instead. She wasn't fond of him because he
said, We're not spring chickens any more. So maybe Mayberry had a lot of
older doctors who'd work a little while then retire.

Also there was Dr. Pendyke, but he was a dog mange specialist and probably
didn't practice medicine on humans.

RE: Barney's romantic kisses

2009-07-09 Thread Sue Doughty

I was watching Barney's Physical last night where it is decided that
the Sheriffs and deputies have to maintain a certain weight and height.
In the first part of the episode, they are having celebration for Barney
being with the Sheriff's department for five years. When Thelma Lou is
leaving the party, she and Barney share a very nice kiss (flat on the
mouth - like when Andy told the story of Romeo and Juliet to Opie) at
the door.

Guest Characters

2009-07-09 Thread Sundale
Ted posed the question about any characters that appeared only once in TAGS
that we'd like to have seen more of. It seems to me that shows today try SO
HARD to have a CORRECT mix characters that they inevitably fall flat on their
face. What they end up with seems forced and contrived. TAGS was a near perfect
blend of characters.

That being said, I would like to offer up a character that appeared once that I
think could have been incorporated into the show. While I hesitate to tamper
with perfection, don't you think it would have been a plus if Mary Grace
(Gossage?), Thelma Lou's cousin (She's NICE), moved to Mayberry and she and
Gomer became an occasional story line. Their relationship certainly was going
in a positive direction when last we saw them. Mary Grace Canfield was the
actress who played Mary Grace (guess the folks who came up with character's
names weren't working that week!) and, of course, she later became Ralph Monroe
the carpenter on Green Acres. Wikipedia tells me that she was born in 1924 and
is still with us.

Another one to consider for reappearance would be Michael J. Pollard as
Barney's cousin Virgil. Though a little of Pollard goes a long way, IMHO.

Which makes me think: what about a scene with Mary Grace and Virgil together!!
That WOULD be awkward! And quiet...

Mayor Stoner's tie

2009-07-09 Thread Janet Anderson
This has probably been mentioned before, but I wondered about the mayor
wearing a tie to go fishing on The Bed Jacket episode.

There's something I've noticed about Mayor Stoner's tie. In just about every
scene he's in, the tie is tied sloppily with the narrow back part hanging lower
than the front part. I wonder if this was the writers' idea, or if Parley Baer
came up with it. I think it's a good touch. Mayor Stoner is usually so fussy
and mean that his inability to properly tie a tie gives him a bit more humanity
and makes him even slightly endearing (in a crotchety sort of way). Of course,
in The Bed Jacket, we learn that his wife is not exactly all sweetness and
light, so maybe that's why he takes out his frustrations so much on Andy!

Andy's southern accent and colorful expressions are more exaggerated in the

mayberrians in shorts

Ok enough about hot uniforms. Its hot where I am right now and reading all this
stuff about sweat stained uniforms just makes me hotter.
I'm still looking for people in shorts. I know Howard wore shorts on the Island
and Aunt Bee bought matching sets for Opie and Andy for their California trip
and I think one time
or maybe a couple of times Andy is in his boxer shorts but how about the ladies
I can't remember seeing any in shorts. I know it wasn't until Peggy wore slacks
that we even saw women in pants other Frankie Flint and she wore overalls.

Vic's time

Vic interesting but it forces me to say you don't have enough to do --Bob

Bob,
Now everybody must think I'm lazy. When in fact I worked 50 and half hours last
week and drove nearly 3000 miles. Watching time is part of my job since the
Federal DOT requires every truck driver to log their time . So it isn't very
hard for me to notice little things like the 12:34:56/07/08/09 when it comes
up. In fact tonight I'm  leaving home around midnight so I can make all the
deliveries and get my truck back to the warehouse before the weekend kicks in.
i got less than a year to go and I won't have to drive anymore.
I wonder if Howard ever had the crazy hours I have when he drove for the
Mayberry Transfer Company.
Well, anyway Bob now you know how I notice things like that clock time. But i'm
still looking for shorts in Mayberry and everyone else is talking about a mayor
wearing a crooked tie or lawmen in sweaty uniforms. I feel like E.T. in the
classroom when he wanted to write his sen-tence and Helen told him to Please
Sit Down ! and he responded something like 'You always want to do something
else, everytime I want to do something else.
Anyway now everyone knows I'm just a regular working Joe like everyone else. I
wonder if any of the stores in Eau Clare Wisconsin will need a bagger when I
retire. Just a little
side humor for one of our great digest friends
