Re: Return to Mayberry on DVD

2009-07-27 Thread Michael Eury
While it's true that "Return to Mayberry" was released on DVD only as
a bonus in the TAGS Complete Series DVD set, occasionally those
"Return" DVDs are auctioned on eBay.

I bought all 8 seasons of TAGS individually, like most of you, but
last year "won" an eBay auction for a "Return to Mayberry" DVD ... and
if memory serves, I paid only $8 or so for it.

Incidentally, I've been on this list for a dozen years but silent for
much of the past few, but this talk of "Return to Mayberry" has
brought to mind a question:

Does anyone know if there was a conscious decision not to include some
of the actors who came into the TAGS/Mayberry RFD cast late in the
cast of "Return to Mayberry"?

Granted, Deputy Warren Ferguson might not have the largest fan club,
and Sam and Mike Jones (as well as Millie from the bakery) came on
board to fill the roles of Andy and family,
but their inclusion in this one-time-only reunion film would have been
welcomed (as would a cameo by TAGS' frequent drop-in actor Allan
Melvin).

Gotta go! Here's comes Otis in his Ice Cream Truck!

Return to Mayberry

2009-07-27 Thread Bart Boatwright
Mary, did you buy each set individually, or the complete series set
that was released last? It is only available in the complete series set.

Hats and such

2009-07-27 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
Hey thanks everyone for your ideas and comment on Mayberry Secrets.

I think that besides the Home plate revelation (Opie was safe) the Cave
Rescue (non-Rescue) ranks right up there.
Then there were all those facts in Opie's Newspaper..but those were
known by at least 5 people (3 at the dump and the two boys) so they we
not quite as well kept.
There were many, I think, that Andy just kept to himself (like all the
times he made Barney look good) or he let someone else off the hook.

My question to ponder today is about Ladies hats...and it has nothing to
do with Frank Myers' berries either.

In the color episode that Aunt Bee runs against Howard for town council,
the show opens with Aunt Bee's Garden Club Meeting. The camera angle in
the opening scene pans all the hats 0n their heads that are made of
beautiful and colorful flowers.

This seemed odd to me, to be at a meeting in a home, and the women were
all adorned with these fancy hats. There was not hardly a bare head in
the house. Even Nice Dress Nellie had her hat on. You would have
thought it was Easter Sunday and the scene was of church..so tell
me..was this common place for ladies to get all dolled up and fixed up
for a Garden Club meeting at someone's home? I think they even had on
their little white gloves. Of course, being I guy, I thought they
should be wearing some pruning gloves in case they wanted to do any real
gardening,

Check it out..the colors really made full use of the new color
capabilities of that day. Maybe Weavers just had a big sale and they
all went as a group to buy one.

Now me, I wear a ball cap a lot, but we don't see many of those in
Mayberry until "the Baseball game". I need one of those big white
wide-brimmed jobs that Joe Hamilton and Mayor Pike, and all those guys
around town wear. Noting says Town Loafer like a big white hat.

The Untrained Voice
I spent the day on my roof Saturday, but I don't have a roof compelsion
like Fluffy-I just had dirty gutters.
I wonder how my daughter felt seeing her Daddy stuck up on a roof with
muddy gloves

Dr. Johnny Sturdy in Mayberry

2009-07-27 Thread Tom Lawrence
Howard Hesseman's two "Andy" appearances were credited to "Don Sturdy," a
pseudonym he employed on "Andy" as well as on "Dragnet."
Why he used that stage name is unpublished near as I can tell. Perhaps he
wanted a more "regular-guy" name or it was an effort to emulate -- or mock -- a
lot of names used for young actors for a while: Rock Hudson, Rip Torn and, who
can forget, Dash Riprock.
Maybe he felt he was slumming on network shows. It would be nteresting to know.
He was a creator of the groundbreaking satirical San Fran group The Committee
at the time. He had a foot in the mainstream and cutting edge.
Best known as Dr. Johnny Fever, the wise but toasty DJ on "WKRP." he has been a
regular on a number of series ("One Day at a Time," "Head of the Class") been
on several others such as "Rockford" amd "Bob Newhart" and been in many TV
movies and big-screen releases. He's almost always great and was recently the
cuckholded ex-hubby (if that's possible) in "About Schmidt," which starred Jack
Nicholson, another two-time "Andy" guest star.
Tom
ps: I find myself catching some classic episodes early (4 or 5ish) on local
channels here in western Nebraska. Nearly uncut, perfect for the peace before
dawn and a delight in a warm bed.

Barney the Potty-Mouth

2009-07-27 Thread Garry Dallman
Shocking, it wasjust shocking. I just noticed on tonight's TV Land
episode "Andy's English Valet", that our beloved deputy uttered a
near-expletive. As he was pulling Malcolm Merriweather off the hood of the
truck, Barney loudly said "Get the hell off there!" It was nearly lost in
the commotion of the scene, but it seemed oddly out of place and out of
character. I figured Don Knotts was merely ad-libbing. Does anyone recall
any other instances of odd dialog or action in other eps? For example,
Barney's suspicion that the farmer (Sam?) might be growing marijuana? Again,
that seemed out of place in Mayberry.

Just wondering,

Re: Barney the Potty-Mouth (Garry's WRONG)

2009-07-27 Thread Allan Newsome

Wow Garry

I don't know what you're hearing but that is NOT what Barney said. What
he said was:

BARNEY: Everybody back! Get back everybody! Get back! Everybody get
back! Alright you,come on.

MAN: Look at my truck, Barney. Take him out'a here.
BARNEY: You get out'a here too. Come on! Get down off of there.
Everybody get back! Back everybody! Come on lets go!

Those are the EXACT words that were said. I listened to the DVD of the
episode and even slowed down the play back so I could make sure I heard
every word he says.

So...no need for anybody to be shocked because Garry was extremely
mistaken. Somehow he mistook "Get down off of there" in to "Get the
off of there" and thankfully was in error.
