I feel that Andy, with his nearly infallible wisdom, knew that Barney would not be able to withstand the charms of the female prisoner, would succumb and allow her to escape, which is exactly what transpired until Andy abruptly arrived. Oh, he was definitely going back to be with her. Just as the title Prisoner of Love implies, Andy was ignoring reality by following his heart and not his head. You can see him struggle with it when he's standing outside the courthouse doors.
