Spin Offs
The very first, absoutely first spin off of one comedy show to another was when The Great Gildersleeve left the Fibber McGee and Molly Show and started his own show. But that was radio, and I know most people do not follow old time radio the way I do. I guess you could technically say that TAGS was a spin off from Make Room For Daddy since that is where it first appeared. I will let someone else with more knowledge on the subject tell us the first television spinoff. Orville Hendricks - Selling Butter and Eggs - Martha and I have a spin off and his name is Evan. Trouble is that instead of spinning off, when he drives the egg truck he spins out and cracks my eggs. > I was just thinking about how Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. was a spinoff of TAGS and > wondering if anybody out there knows if this was the first time a spinoff of > a sitcom was made. > > If it wasn't does anyone know what was? > > > > Jerry Graber > > _ The New Busy is not the too busy. Re: Spin Offs
> 9. Spin Offs (Jerome Graber) > ** I think the answer to what was the first spinoff depends on your definition of "spinoff". See Mr. Mulik's explanation below. A. I've been reading the discussion lately about whether or not TAGS was the first TV spinoff. In mid-1996, when I wrote an article about TAGS for Classic TV magazine (no longer in print), I mentioned the 'fact' that TAGS was the first spinoff (1960), but someone wrote in to correct me, pointing out some earlier shows -- Wanted: Dead or Alive (1958, spun off from {Trackdown);} Law of the Plainsman (1959, spun off from The Rifleman) and Pete and Gladys (1960, spun off from December Bride.) In my book (that's a figure of speech) a series is not a spinoff unless it's pilot episode aired as an episode of an established series. To the best of my knowledge, the three above example do NOT fit this definition, which means that TAGS truly was the first real TV spin-off. --Paul Mulik HistoryBuff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Putting on my bucket (like Gomer did in the spinoff pilot)... "The Andy Griffith Show" itself was technically a spinoff of "Make Room for Daddy" (known at that point as "The Danny Thomas Show"), even though Andy and Opie were only one shot characters. But some people argue that shouldn't count (I say it does). Anyway, there was a notable spinoff that premiered on CBS in 1960, same time as Andy: "Pete and Gladys," a spinoff of "December Bride." Pete, played by Harry Morgan (best remembered as Colonel Potter from "M*A*S*H"), was the next door neighbor on "Bride" and often mentioned his unseen wife Gladys, but on the show she was actually played by an actress as a Gracie Allen-type. Some might argue that "The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" was a spinoff of "I Love Lucy," but I'm not so sure I would agree with that. A few series got their starts as one shot episodes of "Desilu Playhouse," including "The Untouchables" and "The Twilight Zone." In old time radio, what's considered the first spinoff as we would know one, happened to be a radio show that's been much discussed here on the Digest lately: "The Great Gildersleeve." Gildy was the next door neighbor on "Fibber McGee and Molly" before he moved away to another small town and got his own series in 1941. "The Beulah Show" was another spinoff featuring a character introduced on "Fibber McGee and Molly." Many consider "A Day in the Life of Dennis Day" and "The Phil Harris/Alice Faye Show" to be spinoffs of "The Jack Benny Show." money making
As a kid, one of my favorite ways to "make" money was to check the slots of pay phones. One time I found a cricket! Also other vending machines, which was handy because as soon as you found money you could spend it. I don't recall seeing any pay phones in Mayberry. There might have been one at the drug store or Wally's, but I haven't seen any. Has anyone else? Overalls
We must not forget how beautiful Frankie Flint looked in her overalls. As far as I am concerned she didn't need all those female doo dads to make herself look great. Personally I like the rugged look in a woman. Spin offs
Back in the late 50s, Spring Byington starred in December Bride. One of the supporting characters was named Pete Porter (played by Harry Morgan) who had an unseen wife named Gladys. In 1960, shortly after December Bride ended first run production, Pete and Gladys premiered with Harry Morgan and Gladys very much visible as portrayed by Cara Williams. That's the first spin off that comes to mind. dan ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
SPINOFF
Jackie Gleason claimed the first spin off. Gleason portayed his character, Ralph Kramden, on the Cavalcade of Stars in 1951. The Honey Mooners aired in 1955. The first spin off from an existing on air show was 'Pete and Gladys' which was a spin off of 'December Bride'in 1960. -- Ted (Theodoric of York) ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Anyone have any information on the health of Andy Griffith these days? Congratulations to the Linn family and our beloved Ken Anderson for getting the right answer. Barney did litter as he tore up Bob Rogers parking ticket in episode 33 Barney's replacement. As far as wearing overalls, I can think of two others Clint Biggers wore em when he come to claim his eleven dogs in dogs, dogs, dogs, and Rafe Hollister you know that "seedy" character almost always wore em.
