2011-01-24 Thread Gary A. Johnson
John Masters was about to kick Barney out from the choir - the very day he
asked
him to join.  John called the emergency meeting (to tell then he was going to
tell Barney Fife to get out of the choir).  Andy, Thelma Lou & Aunt Bee refused
to tell Barney so John restated "then I'll tell him".  One diversion (secret
meeting practice - John's idea) and reaffirmation that he'd tell Barney.  The
last meeting with Andy, Thelma Lou and John left little doubt when he tells
Andy
that it's "you or me" led Andy to develop his alternate ways: uvula (I got
one) & the solo microphone.

John delivered the bad news when the Ralph Prichard, first tenor, had to drop
out - of course, that was an announcement and not a "man-up" confrontation...

John called the PO-lice to evict the Darlings when he KNEW there was more than
one tenant in the hotel room.  He knew better than to take the law into his own
hands.

I watched "the Pageant" recently.  That teh episode about the Centennial, and
Aunt Bee trying out for Lady Mayberry.  Just some rambling thoughts here.

There were a few times when Aunt Bee had to go to Play practice, that Andy just
seemed to be kicking back at home.  Why wasn't he, as "James Merriweather"
going
to play practice as well.  Perhaps they were just working on certain scenes,
but
he doesn't seem the type not to be there to  support.

Did John Masters ever deliver bad news?  He chickened out and had Andy tell
Barney when he was a lousy singer, and he had Andy do the same thing when Aunt
Bee was a lousy actress.  For a guy so worried about his reputation in the
norther part of th state, he was a bit spineless.

If the script of Happy Valley was true..whetever happened to the Indian
reservation, and Nugatuck's family?? All we hear about after that is one Native
American at election time.

I find it interesting that just a few days ago, I made fun of my own name
(Gritton) with my post about "the Grit" and then there was a little moulage
about the name Crump and Ken's piece that I found very witty and harmless.  We
can all be like Barney at times and be "high-spirited" but we goota watch that
vein poppin out of our neck, when we take things too seriously.  I agree that
the name Crump, was conjured up by the writers to make Andy think of a teacher
who might be somewhat repulsive.  Miss Crump then showed by her physical
appearance, and manner, that you can't judge a person by their name.  She, if
fact, brought a certain grace and dignity to the name Crump "C_R_U_M_P".  I
agree, though, that we need to respect the names of real people.  We've all
probably been teased about something, and a name is something every  deserves
repsct for.

The native Americans are mentioned again in the episode about the Battle of
Mayberry. Opie interviews Tom Strongbow, who looked curiously like Hank the
bowler from Mt. Pilot when Howard bowled his 300. Maybe Tom Strongbow was a
descendant of Nugatuck?

Perhaps the reservation survived at least as long as until the Battle of
Mayberry. One would presume that Mayberry had already been founded at the time
of the battle. Maybe they moved after getting embarassed by the true story of
the battle?

Snow at NC Outer Banks

2011-01-24 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. I've heard on the news that the NC Outer Banks had 4-6"
of snow over the weekend. That's unusual for that area. Most of us know that's
where Andy Griffith lives but Andy Taylor would probably say,"Curious,
Curious," or "Call the (snowplow) man," or "Yep, that's definitely not a rain."

The weatherman says we may get snow again (whew!) Tues. & Wed.

RE: Update from Mayberry On Main

2011-01-24 Thread Good, Don

Thanks to all who came for our "Mayberry Day" in Mount Airy on Saturday.
Special thanks to our favorite Mayberry Drunk - Otis Campbell aka Kenneth
Junkin, who came up from Alabama, just for our event. He livened up the place
and made lots of fans smile for photo ops. We had lots of fun and good trivia
contests and door prizes. Hope anyone who missed the fun, will come to visit
when they are in Andy's hometown - we always have something going on.
---

I enjoyed being able to stop by and visiting with you all (Debbie, Darrel,
Samantha, and Kenneth). It was my second visit there (first in the new
location). What particularly struck me is that as y'all had TAGS playing on a
TV, all of us seemed glued to it. We watched Frank Myers expecting to collect
on his bond like it was the first time we've seen the episode. TAGS may be set
in days gone by, but it never gets old.

Skeet

2011-01-24 Thread Dan Goodwin
Yes, they did shoot skeet in one episode. Andy got beat out by Gail Davis.
Not surprised, though, she used to play Annie Oakley.

And you know,I never have found a good recipe for skeet. They always turn
out tough no matter how we cook 'em.

Crumps & Pooveys

2011-01-24 Thread Larry Hamrick
Hey, Mayberry friends. There are a number of Crump and Poovey families living
in my area of NC. I went to high school with a couple of Crump boys and had a
neighbor that married a Poovey and I know their children, but it wasn't a good
idea to make fun of their names. You'd probably wind up with a knot on your
head. Just kidding, they're all good folks.

Lexington and all its charms outpace even Mayberry

2011-01-24 Thread Holland Shoaf

Hi Mayberry fans ! I sometimes post here from time to time. Im an avid TAGS
viewer and read the forum here often.
You will see at the end of every post I sign my name and city with the " less
than one hour away from Mayberry " tagged at the end.
I live in Lexington and we have a circulation newspaper here called the
Dispatch. Today that printed an article that got my feathers riled.

http://www.the-dispatch.com/article/20110124/COLUMNISTS/101244008/1051/COLUMNISTS?p=1&tc=pg

I overviewed the article and didnt see any reference to Mayberry, but its
understood in the title someone is trying to draw contrast between the two
places or draw attention to the article using my beloved Mayberry. I have lived
in Lexington all my life and visit Mayberry ( Mt Airy ) not often enough. I see
the charm in both towns but why one " writer " would take a poke at wonderful
Mayberry just to draw attention to an article that doesnt include Mayberry in
its story kinda takes the cake. Its as though all the nice things that were
written about Lexington doesnt include Mt. Airy in any form or simularity. Our
paper is owned by the New York Times if that tells you anything. I will write
them a little something. I feel like Barney did when he wrote his resignation
papers to the Esquire Club.

Just some observations

2011-01-24 Thread Daniel Santos

Watching season 8 got me to thinking (scary I know)..during the episode
"Church Benefactor" when the women wanted new choir robes and the church had
to be brought level a couple of things..Didn't $500 seem a bit stiff for
the choir robes and most of the women sewed. Why not make the choir
robes??? Also why did the church not just take up a collection for the robes
and / or leveling the church off??? In season 6 when the church buys the
organ.why were just the town businessmen responsible for paying for the
organ??? Again why was it not expected that the congregation as a whole pay for
it
In the episode where Barney arranges the summit meeting. Why if they were
suppose to meet the next day did he wait until then to go to Mayberry to find
someplace for them to meet??? Why not leave the day before???
I know picky, picky...it's just a TV show. If it helps any I do the same thing
with my daughters Scooby Doo cartoons. To much time on my hands I think.

Parfumes

2011-01-24 Thread Daniel Santos

I sent this post previously from my phone, but I don't think it got thru anyway
I didn't see it. On the episode "Opie's Drugstore Job" season 8, Opie broke a
$64 GIANT bottle of parfume or supposed parfume. Shouldn't he and his friend
have noticed there was no smell from the broken bottle. The store should have
positively reeked. Just one of those things that make you go hm.

don't you have a jack??

2011-01-24 Thread mike
Yeah I have a jack, just don't need it when dealing with the snow.

I just got off the phone with a friend in Minnesota . He said that since early
this morning the snow has been nearly waist high and is still falling. The
temperature is dropping below zero and the north wind is increasing. His wife
has done nothing but look through the kitchen window all day. He says that if
it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.
