Dinner

Yes, when I was growing up on the farm, we ate breakfast, dinner, and supper.
Dinner was the noon meal and often was the most substantial meal of the day,
and supper was usually mid-evening, around 8:00, give or take an hour, since my
dad was a farmer and didn't get back in the house till evening, after all his
chores were done. People in Mayberry would have used "Sunday dinner" to refer
to the midday meal, not the evening meal. I think that terminology was more
common when our culture was more rural and less urban. When I got in high
school and college, I started using the word "lunch," which I heard used more
often. But I still call the evening meal supper and probably always will.

Mayberry Keepsakes

2011-11-17 Thread Harriet Browder

These "Keepsakes from Mayberry" do not necessarily have to have ever been seen,
do they? I'm thinking I'd like to have the corner street sign that designates
Rockford and Haymore, since that is Andy Griffith's home street and corner in
Mount Airy. I don't believe it's ever shown but in the last black and white
episode, with Jerry Van Dyke, Andy offers him the prestigious position of
crossing guard. He walks Jerry outside the courthouse, points down the street,
and tells him school is just about to be let out and he needs to go to Rockford
and Haymore. So that's what I'll take as my choice of a Mayberry Keepsake.

I belong to a Walton's Mountain on line group (their newsletter comes out only
once a month). They want members to choose a "Keeper of." I'm the Keeper of
John Boy's typewriter. I would have picked the typewriter in the Mayberry
courthouse but who needs two typewriters?

Wow! Thank you guys for all the great answers to my "what keepsake would you
like to have" question. You all had great answers. Im sure we have all thought
about something from the show we would love to have. I have often wondered if
the cast kept anything as a keepsake. Thanks again, it was interesting to see
all the different thoughts and answers.

I remember visiting my grandparents in Arcadia, California in the
1970's and dinner was, indeed the noontime meal.
I always thought a great replacement for Don Knotts would have been
Jerry Van Dyke.

RE: Keepsakes and Digging

2011-11-17 Thread Hughes, Clyde L. (HSC)
That's a great thought...I wonder what's under that blacktop?!
Maybe, if it's anything like Opie's controversial newspaper or Barn's magazines
(purchased to put a kid through college), they might be better under the
pavement.
However, just thinking about the outdoor props that might've been junked makes
me want to go on a treasure hunt.

Anyone want to go in on an investment for renting digging equipment? LOL

2011-11-17 Thread Paul Mulik
The other day John L. asked some questions about TAGS.  I'll take them one at a
time.

>>> why did Jim Nabors leave his Mayberry TAGS Role of  Gomer Pyle to go
>>> continue playing Gomer on "Gomer Pyle, USMC?"

I'd think that just about any supporting actor would jump at the chance to star
in his/her own show.  I've no idea what sort of salary Jim Nabors earned while
working on TAGS, but I would guess he earned at least 20 times that amount when
he starred in Gomer Pyle - USMC.  Someone recently mentioned Ronnie Schell's
short-lived show "Good Morning, World" which co-starred Goldie Hawn.  Ronnie
walked away from the role of Duke Slater on Gomer Pyle - USMC to do that show,
which unfortunately flopped.  Luckily he was able to return to the role of Duke
Slater later.

>>>Did TAGS ever say  how Ernest T. Bass escaped from jail?

In the epilogue of Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army, Barney searches the cell and
finds an old bent fork.  He concludes that Ernest T. had been using the fork as
a lock pick; however when Barney "locks are practically my middle name" Fife
tries to open the lock with the fork, he fails.  Side note: Barney claims the
fork "presses against the tumblers" and in the Cousin Virgil episode, Andy
concludes that the shiny, polished keys "won't turn the tumblers" anymore.  I'm
not a locksmith, but I do know something about locks.  It is obvious by looking
at the keys that the jail cell doors are simple WARDED locks, which do not have
tumblers.

>>>And Lastly where were the outside and  inside scenes filmed and can you
>>>still see the outside place or is it torn   down? I heard that the outside
>>>scenes were done at a place called 40 acres. Is  that true?

Yes, almost all of the exteriors were filmed at 40 Acres, a legendary lot in
Culver City, CA which was used for many hundreds of films and TV series,
notably the original King Kong and Gone With the Wind.  Remember the famous
shot in GWTW in front of the train depot where all of the dead and wounded
soldiers were laying in the street?  The same railroad depot was used on TAGS,
in the episode The Legend of Barney Fife.  A few other buildings scene in GWTW
would be used on TAGS as well.  The whole lot was bulldozed around 1976, and
office and industrial buildings now occupy the site.

Kipp Teague of Virginia has created an AMAZING website dedicated to 40 Acres.
It oughta be required reading for every law enforcement officer, uh, I mean
every Mayberry fan.

http://www.retroweb.com/40acres.html

The interiors were filmed a few miles away at DesiLu Cahuenga studios; as far
as I know these studios are still in use today.  Seinfeld was shot there (hard
to believe that show is now over 20 years old).

TAGS episode "Bailey's Bad Boy" Question

2011-11-17 Thread John Lane

In the episode of TAGS "Bailey's Bad Boy". There is a question that does not
make sense. At 13:50 Andy walks into courthouse and him and Barney are both
dressed up and Andy tells Ronald Bailey that they're closing since it's Sunday
and Otis is still asleep, but Andy tells Ronald Bailey that they are going to
Andy's house and eat dinner HOw does that all add up? A: Otis is still
asleep. B: Barney is reading the comics. C: Andy and Barney are dressed up for
church. D: They are going home to eat dinner. E: They're closing now. F: It
looks like morning How does that all make sense? DO YOU KNOW THE ANSWER?

KeepSake

2011-11-17 Thread DAVID QUINN

As far as Mayberry Keepsakes go, if you are going to wish for one, why not get
one that people would know was authentic? There are so many reproductions
around today. My thought is I would have liked to have had the sign from the
Mayberry depot that was shown in the final episode of TAGS. You know the one
that said:

   MAYBERRY

 Pop. 5360Elev. 671

That got me to thinking, can you imagine how many of those keepsakes were just
thrown in the landfill when 40 acres was razed?Every time I watch Antique
Roadshow on PBS, there is some guy with a painting telling the host, "They were
about to throw this in the trash when I saved it". Then the host will say
"That is worth $15,000".
Just think, probably Floyd's barber chair, and Andy's front porch, the bulliten
board, the gas heater, and everything inside the courthouse, all thrown in the
landfill.

And it's not like we all can walk down to the landfill like Barney, Aunt Bea,
and Andy did one time and retrieve the stuff.

Just thinking.

Orville Hendricks - The Butter and Egg Man from Mt. Pilot. I still have one
keepsake. I have my delivery truck that was on the show. It still runs fine
and I still use it to deliver eggs and butter. (Before you go Emailing me
trying to buy it, that truck only exists in my feeble mind). But wouldn't it
be great if I did have it?
