tobacco comment
@rspell3:You are spot on with your assessment of the gathering of tobacco leaves. My father raised tobacco as far back as I can remember and we "cropped" tobacco in North Carolina.Other terms dealing with tobacco from start to finish were "planting or setting " tobacco,"croppers","stringers","handers","sorters","hangers","driving drag"(not dressing), "curing","tobacco crates"and my favorite memory, going with my daddy to the tobacco market to sell the fruits of his labor. He would always buy me a Pepsi & a Baby Ruth, both of which cost probably no more than 15 cents. Depending on your locale, any of the aforementioned words can take on a whole new meaning.Anyway you spell it,it was hard work.Lest we forget those horrible tobacco worms and having to "sucker" tobacco. Dewey in NC Bought the missus a hamster skin coat last week.Took her to the county fair last night...took me 3 hours to get her off the Ferris Wheel. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Re: Subject: tobacco picking or cutting-WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 14, Issue 23
VERY INTERESTING THREAD as there seem to be regional terms that vary. I spent a few growing up years in the Kentucky area and recall the term cutting but also recall the term picking in Gainesville Georgia early 60's and recall seeing the barns with tobacco drying in that manner. A few years ago (about) I saw some still like that going through Tennessee. We were behind a tobacco farmer with leaves on his truck on the highway and I wanted to follow to see where he was going and sure 'nuf there was the barn and poles. Re: rspe...@nc.rr.com "While I understand the term in Kentucky is cutting tobacco, because I think with burley tobacco the entire stalk is cut - in North Carolina tobacco (flue-cured, not burley) is "picked" or "cropped" a few leaves each week over a four to five week season in the summer as the leaves partially "cure" on the stalk - in the old days the picked or cropped leaves were tied to sticks and hung in barns on "tier" poles because they were at different levels in the barn - those of us who had to climb to the top of the barn to hang the sticks of tobacco referred to them as "tear" poles because it would be so hot at the top of the barn our eyes would run water " Yup I saw that too, and L.O.V.E. that show Re :flyfishe...@hotmail.com This reference and usage was recently on the "Moonshiners" TV show on the Discovery Channel when Tim Smith hides his 'shine in a tobacco field and then worries that it will be discovered since 'they'll be pulling tobacco soon'... ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Green, green, everywhere green!
The house I grew up in down south (South Dakota is where it was) was built in the late 60's. The stove and refrigerator were both "Avocado Green" in color... Apparently that "love of green" was a nation-wide trend! Now, just to stir up another moulage a bit more, family friends from South Georgia used to tell us that they were "going out to pick tobacco" that day. However, if I would ask for more details, they would tell me that you would kind of rip the lower few leaves off the stalk, allowing the upper leaves to mature a bit longerso, they "picked" by pulling (they also said that the dew on the leaves in the morning would make your eyes sting if it got in them. Kind of brings a tear to your eye just thinking about it, doesn't it!). -Greg ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

green
I don't know about film sets but I remember when working for both the US Navy and Marine Corps, most of the walls were a shade of green most of the time. When we bought this house, the former owners were Irish and had lots of green, including green shag carpeting - ugh! We changed all of it before moving in. Not that we don't like green, we just prefer it outside in the grass and trees. Aunt Bee of Orlando ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Color green in TAGS
I think green was just a popular color then. I am watching the brady bunch as I write this (in fact Gentleman Dan is a waiter lol!) and they have a lot of green in the house. My house was built in 1952 and when refinishing the cabinets I saw green deep down in them. Plus our bedroom walls when we removed the wood panneling was green. So I guess it was just a popular color. I think we even had a green fridge once! ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
