Gas Pumps

2014-01-02 Thread Dan Goodwin
In The Lodge, there has always been a camera angle that puzzled me. When
Andy drives to the filling station to ask Gooberabout who black-balled Howard,
Andy pulls up to the closest pump, which is marked Premium. Goober is standing
at the end of the pump island, beside this pump. Then he walks around to the
other side of the pump to talk to Andy. Behind him, the pump now reads
Regular. The backgrouind of the shot is consistent for shooting back across
the pump island. All I can figure is that the pump is marked differently on
each side.

Re: Gas

2014-01-02 Thread Good, Don
And that's exactly what I recall from the '60s. Gas was in the low to mid
30 cent range well into the early '70s.

How many times in the late 1970s did you hear someone say something like, If
gas ever gets to a dollar a gallon, I'll just quit driving. While 30 cents a
ding sounds pretty good, I sure wouldn't want to see that same kind of
reduction on my paycheck. Sometimes I think I should be paid what I'm worth,
but I couldn't live on that.

Natural disasters in Mayberry

2014-01-02 Thread Paul Mulik
Larry asked about natural disasters in Mayberry. The town once experienced a
flood, but we are never told anything about it. In the episode Andy's Vacation,
Barney says I can get Gomer as a deputy, he's still sworn in from the flood.
Then again, it may have been only the courthouse that was flooded. That has
been known to happen; Andy says so in Andy and the Gentleman Crook (this place
ain't been so clean since the boiler busted and flooded the place.)

Mayberry has also been hit by at least one tornado. Andy mentions it in the
episode Goober's Contest, when he predicts that Floyd will react badly to being
informed that he did not really win a $200 cash prize.

Funny how a disaster changes the way folks think about things. Every event in
Joplin, for example, either happened before the tornado or after the tornado.
It's sort of like how dates include B.C. or A.D.

Natural Disasters in Mayberry

2014-01-02 Thread Ken Anderson
Regarding natural disasters in Mayberry, the first one that comes to mind
is Barney and his motorcicle. Now I realize that it might not count as a
bonifide natural disaster, but it certainly was a disaster.

The other one that comes to mind was mentioned in season 7's episode
Goober's Contest. When Goober was explaining to Andy that he made a
mistake with the prize money for his contest and that there was no $200
prize and he asked Andy how Floyd would take it when he told him. Andy
replied, Well, do you remember that tornado that hit town about 12 years
ago?. So apparently there was a tornado that hit Mayberry.
