Sharing troubles

2011-06-01 Thread Carol Stonemetz
I don't think anyone should get a rude or in trouble for breaking any rules
by telling us about the devastation in their lives due to tornadoes, etc.
We are a community and we want to know these things so we can sympathize and
pray and encourage. I'm trying to think of that episode where Andy was out
of town and all manner of bad things happened that Barney couldn't handle. A
kid got his head caught in a sewer drain, there was an accident in the
middle of town, etc. When Andy came back, he gave Barney a little lecture
on keeping a cool head and handling things well. Then the same sort of
stuff started happening with Andy there. Barney stood at the courthouse and
gave Andy a little salute when Andy looked back in frustration. All that to
say that dangers, toils, and snares can come at us pretty fast and we need
all the help we can get. I guess I'm asking Allen and others to be patient
with our community members who are suffering right now. TAGS isn't going
anywhere and soon we can be back to talking about Myra Koontz and that story
that is going around about her.

used it for him. It's that one that sounds a little like Dragnet. Can

Bad luck omens

2008-05-31 Thread Carol Stonemetz
Sure signs that Bad Luck is a comin' your way:

* A bat flying into the house
* An owl hooting 3 times
* 3 butterflies together
* Hearing a rooster crow at night
* Getting out of bed left foot first
* A picture falling
You can reverse your bad luck by turning three times counter clockwise.
---
That post really helped me, Allan. We've been having a string of "bad luck"
lately. Car problems, someone backed into a brick wall by our driveway, and
other unexpected expenses, to name a few. (If it weren't for bad luck, I'd
have no luck at all.) Anyway, last week my husband saw a bat in our house.
He opened the doors and windows and we haven't seen the bat since. I'm
going to turn around three times counter clockwise right now. And for good
measure, I'm going to make my husband do it too. Even though he did make a
crack about me not being a trained noticer because we didn't notice the
broken wall when we got home last night. We haven't had any of the other
omens 'cepting I don't know which foot hits the floor first when I get up.

What about the economy, Mr. Stoner? Are going to raise taxes as well as the
church? I know we can't take it (money) with us, but as Deputy Fife said, if
you keep taxing us, we won't be able to go ourselves. As for the true identity
of Mr. Schwamp - do you really think it's the government's business to pry into
the lives of private citizens? While investigating the need for new sewers, I
suggest you also investigate getting smaller grates so little boys can't get
their heads caught in them. And don't let the sewer inspector give out
speeding tickets! Also, I would like to see all the documents relating to the

trained noticing

2008-01-17 Thread Carol Stonemetz
TTown, you didn't cause any problems. You're new to the digest. You'll find
that a lot of subjects get discussed at great length until we realize we're
wandering away from Mayberry. A while back there was the great sleep pants
discussion which went on for quite a while. And we got to talking a lot about
Cheerwine once. Different subjects resurrect from time to time. The founding
members are very patient with those of us who want to know more about something
that had been discussed years ago before we joined. Someone can post some
helpful links if you are looking for something specific.

As far as Rose's husband showing up later as Charlie Foley, the butcher - why,
that just means you are going to be a great trained noticer. If any of you new
members need a phrase or reference explained, just ask. Trained noticer gets
tossed around a lot. I know it's a Barney quote, but someone will have to tell
me the episode and context. Was it in My Fair Ernest T. Bass? I've watched
TAGS a lot but not nearly as much as some of our resident experts. Hang on and
be amazed at all the details that get mentioned about the show. We all have
our favorite episodes and quotes. Some of us have adopted our signatures from
the show. We have Neil Bentley, a rather pushy attorney from Mt. Pilot, but he
wears a good suit. We have the Untrained Voice. Charlie Varney often checked
in, but I haven't seen anything posted from him in quite a while. We have a
few Aunt Bees and some Thelma Lou's. You can be anyone you want as long as
you're kind (rule number 2) and you'll learn a lot. We have a lot of very
clever folks here and I am often amused by their banter. (Mayor Stoner has
been doing some politicking. He'll try to get your vote.) So jump in and hang
on.

First one thing and then another

2008-01-08 Thread Carol Stonemetz

First, I want to welcome all the new digest members. Just jump in where you
can and hang on!

Second, do you suppose that Paul's dish (sorry I can't remember more
specifically) was crashed into when Barney and Mr. Weaver were chasing each
other around the department store in The Shoplifter? I think Mr. Weaver
crashed into a punch bowl set.

Third, I'm glad the theory dan inherited from his maiden aunt is not a hungry
fox coming down out of the hills. I don't think it would like being kept in a
box on his desk.

Fourth, how about renting out big billboards in the L.A. area with a picture of
Mr. Schwamp with a "do you know this fellow" caption? He must have had some
family members. Or we could hand out flyers and maybe put an ad in Opie's
newspaper. Or we could put ol' J. Edgar on the case. (We defy the mafia! Do
you suppose Mr. Schwamp went into some kind of witness protection program?
After all, he was a witness to the rock throwing, paper napkin soaking crime
spree of Ernest T.) Hey! I guess I have theories too! What fun!

Fifth, I love Brenda Jo's movie list and wish I were creative enough to think
of some. The only one my desperate mind could come up with would be based on
my very favorite movie, Harvey. We could call it Schwampy and it could be
about a man who has a friend that no one else can see. The friend could have
extra hands and jingle when he walks around in the trees. Pretty pathetic, I
know. The alternative would be Cool Hand Schwamp trying to break out of the
Mayberry jail.

And finally, since we are currently in our January thaw, I went out for a long
walk today. I saw some random bricks in different yards and immediately looked
around for Ernest T. I didn't see any broken windows so I guess the snowplows
must have put them there. I also saw a football in a yard and wondered if Opie
and the gang had been practicing. It's amazing what one can find when the snow
melts!

Barney on a spree

2007-11-30 Thread Carol Stonemetz
1. Barney dropped a quarter of the counter at the drug store when he was
spying on Ellie and the new doctor.
2. Barney paid Floyd for a haircut and told him to go buy a book about
barbering.
3. Barney gave Floyd a dollar for using his whisk broom.
4. Barney gave Opie money to go by a licorice whip when he was on the
phone.
5. Barney was very generous when he gave money for the Scoby fund.

There were many references to things where Barney did actually buy things,
but I am looking for scenes that actually show him handing over his hard
earned money. I am sure there must be more scenes.

Ken Anderson
---

In The Case of the Punch in the Nose, Barney very deliberately counted out
$1.75 to Floyd for a haircut. Then Floyd said Barney owed him another quarter
for tonic. They argued until Andy came in and made Barney pay the other
quarter. Water is bad for the scalp. It dries it out.

Philosophical meanderings

2007-11-18 Thread Carol Stonemetz
I went to the Wikipedia link and did not see this offensive entry so maybe it
has blessedly been removed. Apparently the poster of this discussion thread is
one of those obsessed with sex and assumes the rest of us are too. A lady who
was offended by vulgar language like "running with" would not be compromising
her reputation nor the sanctity of her body by engaging in premarital sex.
Andy would not be expecting this either. Contrary to what is unfortunately
depicted in and promoted by the mainstream media, sex is not the be-all and
end-all of life. PTL for sensible folks like those here
in our Mayberry corner!
Aunt Bee of Orlando

Aunt Bee, you are very wise and wonderful woman. You excellently expressed
what I have often thought.
We are quite a mixed bunch here in this part of Mayberry. We represent all the
personality types depicted on TAGS. We have wise people, very funny and
talented contributors, trained noticers, superstitious (that's caution!) folks,
impetuous people and sensitive, pardon me, I meant spirited people also. I
don't represent any of the finer traits, but am glad there are those of you who
do. I'm the type who would get my skinny little veins a poppin' over a minor
worry.
A while back there was a quiz we could take which would tell who we most
resembled of TAGS characters. Somehow I scored as an Andy when actually I feel
I'm more like a Mary Grace with a bit of Newton Monroe and Barney thrown in.
I'm nice, real nice (most of the time), but I am inept in lots of areas.

Mayberry and Star Trek

see our beloved Mayberry in such a state!
http://mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/startrek/index.htm

I can't believe my web page is still out there about this.
While we are on the subject there are two more Star Trek episodes (that I
know of) that use Mayberry locales. One is "The Return of the Archons" It
doesn't look familiar because it uses a part of the 40 acres set that was
rarely seen in Mayberry. But if you remember the episode where Mr Tucker
walks into town you will start recognizing the buildings. The other episode
was "The Paradise Syndrome" which was shot not on the 40 acres lot but at
Myers Lake. Too bad we couldn't have seen Kirk throw a rock at the lake LOL.

I already 10-4'd ya

My dreams are shattered, Dapper Dan. However, I'm resilient. Who are the
people in the last two pictures of your site, Floyd's Barber Shop and Foley's
Market? Were they from TAGS or Star Trek? At first, I thought the woman was

Trivial problems

2007-10-11 Thread Carol Stonemetz
re: Trivia Contest

If asked to mediate, I would have suggested that the trivia contestants agree
to "settle out of court in the spirit of Mayberry" as was done in this case. A
very Mayberry like solution. (Of course, in Mt. Pilot this would be a very
complicated case and would be liable to drag on the courts for years")

Brad "Neil Bentley" Cunningham
"My card, in case you ever need services..."

Mr. Bentley,
I know you practice in Mt. Pilot, but I believe precedent for settling things
was set by Sheriff Taylor in the episode titled "A Feud is a Feud." Perhaps
you could do some research and let us know if that would be a fair and
equitable solution. Otherwise, we may have to resort to "A Punch in the Nose."
 Thank you.

Trivia time! Where did that brown pinstriped suit come from? It originally

Howard donated the suit to the undertaker so the dear departed could be

Thelma Lou Schwamp

2007-09-25 Thread Carol Stonemetz
I have a theory - Thelma Lou's last name is Schwump. Since most people
in
Mayberry have kinfolk around town, maybe they are related since it doesn't
appear either of them has much else in the wway of kinfolk in the show

Speaking of Thelma Lou, I sure would like to have her working hours. We know
she works in an office, but she sure is home every time someone goes over
there in the middle of the day. And she dates Barney in the evening a lot, so
she couldn't work to many nights. And then there is "glueing" covers back on
hymn books with Edgar Coleman. And what about her and Edgar Coleman?

The big freeze

2007-09-24 Thread Carol Stonemetz

Does anyone know why Andy, Jr. wasn't featured in "Return to
Mayberry"? I
figure his character would have been 16 or 17 when the movie was made--a
little too young to be off to college. It's been over 20 yrs since I've seen
that
movie. Was he even mentioned? Did he simply vanish like Ron Howard's other
TV brother, Chuck, on "Happy Days"? Maybe we need to call in one of those
interlopin' inspectors and get to the bottom of this!<<<

Well if you do call in one of the inspectors, I'm going to give him the big

about it the better.

Mayoral election

2007-08-14 Thread Carol Stonemetz
Mr. Stoner,
I would be glad to vote for you if you would promise to stop calling Andy
Andrew. (Not sure how to punctuate that last bit there.) A good candidate
does not need to sound pompous. We all make mistakes and I'm willing to
overlook the treed by a bear incident, the being drunk when the governor came
by incident, the moulage you made over the stolen cows, the affair of the bed
jacket when you twisted Andy's arm to make him swap Eagle-eye Annie, etc.
We must remember that Mayor Pike was willing to evict a poor man from his
property then flip-flopped on the issue. First he voted for it, then he voted
against it, then he voted for it again. And he did try to fix the Miss
Mayberry contest in favor of his daughter. I'm sure our fat little mayor did
other somewhat unethical things during his reign, but can't remember them all.
Trained Noticers! We have a political campaign heating up and need to get the
facts before the people. Have either of the candidates ever smoked corn silk
and inhaled? Were they where they said they were during the war? (Barney was
across the big pond in charge of the library at Staten Island, wasn't he?) Did
they earn good grades at the Mayor Academy? What experience do they have? We
need answers, not allegations.

Scenes that bother and confuse

The Man in a Hurry scene with Gomer has also bothered me. Another one is in
Goober Takes a Car Apart. When the other sheriffs show up and assume the car

Giraffes and Odd Facts Known By Few

dan, you can't go against nature. Giraffes are always running around looking
out for number one.*

On another matter, my daughter sent me my very own Odd Facts Known By Few book
(The Ultimate Book of Useless Information by Noel Botham and The Useless
Information Society). The authors say, "Goldie Hawn's career as an
actress-comedienne was launched after being spotted as a dancer in the chorus
line on The Andy Griffith Show in 1966." Is this true and does anyone know
which episode? I don't have any of the color episodes and haven't seen very
many of them. *The book also says that giraffes have no vocal chords. Isn't
that amazing? It is really amazing! It's the most amazing thing I've ever
read. I'll read the rest of the book to myself.

I, too, enjoyed the interview with Mr. Schwamp. Did he nod much, Ken?

And as far as bathrooms on TV, I heard or read somewhere that in the early

I agree with you, Debbie. A Face in the Crowd is an excellent movie but Andy's
character is chilling to see. He really should have gotten an Oscar for his
performance. As for the other movie, would it be the one where he played the
judge that jailed two young girls and one was raped by a guard? I saw that one

and yours are having a wonderful Easter and a nice brand new week.<<

Welcome to Mayberry, Judith. I think you'll find that you will be quite safe
here. We're just a bunch of people who love Mayberry and all the wonderful
traits of a small, friendly hometown. There are only two rules. Number 1:
Obey all rules. Number 2: I've forgotten what that is, but it is essentially
that we have to be nice. And since we are all Mayberry friends and neighbors,
it's easy to be nice. You can adopt a psuedonym - perhaps from one of your
favorite characters or phrases. I call myself Kind behind the eyes. I, too,
enjoy the black and white episodes more than the colored ones but that may be
because I haven't seen many of the colored ones. Just read our "bulletin
board" when you get it, and feel free to jump in with a comment or question.
We have a lot of trained noticers who will be glad to help you out.
Our moderator is Allan Newsome and doubtless he will explain things further for
you. We are always glad to get new neighbors so "jump in where you can and
hang on."
My family did have a blessed Easter and are working on the brand new week.
Thanks so much for your interest.

2007-04-05 Thread Carol Stonemetz

>>"Barney Fife, the overdevoted deputy of a 20-miles-per-hour town,
>>Mayberry,
North Carolina, took the standard big-mouthed bumbling sidekick archetype
established in television's earliest sitcoms and pushed it right over the
edge. "Barney's megalomania, paranoia, persecution complex, and
psychological inadequacies combine to produce one certifiable basket case
who should never be given a gun or a badge," say Harry Castleman and Walter
J. Podrazik in "Harry and Wally's Favorite TV Shows (Prentice Hall, 1989).
But bug-eyed Barney is armed ( if only with a single bullet) and would be
sort of dangerous (by virtue of his utter incompetence) if Sheriff Andy
Taylor weren't around to defuse his high-strung buffoonery - to talk him
down, to reason with him, to serve as therapist to this most dysfunctional
of public servants. But thank goodness for Barney! His various
maladjustments and his clich?-spitting habit ("Nip in it the bud!") keep us
from drowning in all the molasses warmth and old-fashioned good cheer of
"The Andy Griffith Show." "If Andy is soothing to watch," Castleman and
Podrazik add, "Barney is an electric shock, always shooting off on some
tangent."<

I bet Harry Casleman and Walter J. Podrazik subscribe to that Learn-a-Month
magazine. Last month's was on psychology, which is obviously where they
learned those fancy words. I'm sure that Harry's and Walter's inner children
are crying Help me, help me. All they need are some molasses warmth and
old-fashioned good cheer. Barney should be there to answer that call. That's
where I get my warmth and good cheer. I just leave it to Big Barn. And
furthermore, the therapee(s) don't talk back to the therapist!

Kind behind the eyes but smoldering a little bit right now.

quotes

2007-04-05 Thread Carol Stonemetz
Speaking of jaw muscles working reminded me of another favorite quote. Andy
tells Barney, "Now don't get your skinny little veins a'poppin'." Or something
to that effect. If anyone knows the exact quote, please send it to the Digest.
I want to start using it, but will wait for the official verification.

On another matter, does anyone have a copy of Return to Mayberry that they
would be willing to sell me for a reasonable price? I just finished my
Mayberry Memories book which referred to the movie. I only saw it once and
that was years ago before I was a certified TAGS fan. For you new members out
there, I highly recommend The Andy Griffith Show Book and Mayberry Memories,
both by Ken Beck and Jim Clark. I imagine you can get them at Weaver's. They
are both full of facts and trivial trivialities that will be sure to delight.

Paternity suit and wild hogs

To Andge in Bethlehem, GA: That paternity suit quote was funny. I like the
way you can work Mayberry into almost anything.

As for Wild Hogs, I wanted to go see the movie because the previews seemed so
funny. Now I'll make sure I see it. Maybe when it comes out on DVD. Thanks,

I don't remember the episode, but the girl's daddy saw Barney and immediately
thought civil servant. He offered Barney interest in the company and a

Mayberry moments

Doug in Montgomery wrote:
"A co-worker asked me today if I knew Al Becker, who works at a local ad
agency. Of course, I kind of rubbed my chin and said, "Al Becker. Al Becker.
No, I don't think I know him." Even though he didn't make the connection, it
made for a nice little Mayberry moment for me!"

I love those Mayberry moments! I wish everyone could make the connection when
we sneak little quotes in, but I guess it's enough that we enjoy them and can
share them here.
We went to that Smith Brothers Institute down in Washington but I didn't see
Barney's motorcycle or anything from TAGS. The American History museum is
closed but there was a little display in the Air and Space museum. I guess
I'll need to go over to the Armory there in Mayberry.
To Brian in Maryland: I did see the Smithsonian Castle as we were dashing by.
As it happened, Washington was having a snow storm and was quite windy the day
we were there (Sunday). We were all tired, hungry and cold so I didn't make
the kids or hubby wait. We just ran for the car. (But actually, it was warm
by NY standards). To anyone who goes to DC, the Holocaust museum is well worth
a visit. It's horrifying, but we need to see it.
To John: Thanks for the explanation that ramps are leeks. I know what a leek
is but had never heard of the eating kind of ramps.
This digest surely is educational.

Salt rising bread

2007-02-14 Thread Carol Stonemetz
Up here in the frozen north, salt rising bread is readily available at all our
grocery stores. My brother lived near Pittsburgh and couldn't get it, so I
guess it is a regional thing. When we heard it mentioned on TAGS, we were
surprised. It reminds me of past posts where someone was told that iced tea
was "out of season" when they were north of the Mason-Dixon line. It's not
unusual here to have iced tea off the menu in the winter months. I certainly
wouldn't drink it today. 12 degrees with bitter wind chills and 2 feet of snow
on the ground and it's still snowing! Some salt rising toast and hot cocoa is
a different story. Yum.

Andy cranky

2007-02-13 Thread Carol Stonemetz
There was one time in the black and white episodes where Andy is cranky and
it's always bothered me. It's when Goober put the car in the courthouse and
Andy told him to take it out (several times). In the last scenes when the
other sheriffs come to visit and assume it's a traffic safety lesson, Andy
tells Goober to leave it there. Then as soon as the sheriffs leave, Andy gets
a gun out, points it right at Goober and tells him to take the car apart and
get it out of the courthouse. I didn't think Andy was being fair to Goober by
immediately contradicting what he (Andy) said - and then pointing a gun at poor
Goober!

Smith Brothers

2007-02-12 Thread Carol Stonemetz
We are going to Washington this coming weekend. I'll look for Barney's bullet
when we visit the Smith Brothers' Institute. My son and daughter live near
there and have toured the museum that displays Americana. They should know
where to take me. I get a kick out of referring to the Smithsonian as the
Smith Brothers' Institute. It'll probably aggravate my non-TAGS fan kids. But
by now they should be used to me dropping quotes into conversations. I said
something to my son one day and told him it was a quote from TAGS. He said, "I
knew you'd do that." Since I can't come up with anything clever myself, I
might as well help myself to what Andy and Co. had to say. I always give TAGS
the credit.

Porch scenes

2007-01-11 Thread Carol Stonemetz
I don't know if these have been mentioned yet, but I remember the porch scene
in the lucky letter episode where Andy is trying to figure out where Barney
could be. He realizes he needs to think like Barney, then asks Opie what he
would do in that situation. Opie says he guessed he'd go look fo the chain
letter.
Another nice porch scene is where Opie asks why they couldn't take Frank Myers
in since he had been evicted. I think in each case, Opie is seemingly absorbed
in playing with blocks or something but is still included in the grown-up talk.
 Such a comforting thought.

German spy

2006-01-02 Thread Carol Stonemetz
That German spy on Hogan's Heroes wasn't old Hugo Hopfleisch was it? He may
have been on the wrong side but he's one heck of a soldier. He kept the back
of his boots nice and shiny because that's the last thing anyone sees as you're
marching (running?) away.

I was watching Opie's Hobo Friend the other day and realized that Barney was
right from the beginning that Mr. Dave was a bad 'un and would not be a good
influence for Opie. And in the Education of Ernest T. Bass, Barney nailed the
mother figure thing. Were there any other instances where Barney was right
about something before Andy was?

My husband's secretary's husband is a TAGS fan so she and my husband compare
notes on which lines from the show they both hear a lot. It's interesting that
most of them are the same - there are so many wonderful classic lines that one

had a minor car accident one day. I told my darling person to ask her if her
