My Pilgrimage to Meyers Lake/ 'at and to'
MY PILGRIMAGE:. Bad news and good news. Good news: I found, nestled quietly and cooly in the middle of a teeming and sweltering LA, Franklin Canyon Reservoir, and our precious Meyers Lake. Bad news: I couldn't pinpoint the *exact* location where Andy and Opie walked in the opening credits of TAGS. This was partly, perhaps, due to my own lack of trained noticing, and partly because I was accompanied by a friend who had left his wife at home with two robust, high-spirited, and potentially yowling kids and was slightly anxious to return home to relieve her. Thus my Fife-like sleuthing was compromised. But it was pretty darn cool. I saw many locations where Andy and co. *could* have walked, if they didn't walk in fact. I saw the game wardens house. I saw lots of Mayberry-esque flora and fauna, namely many evergreen trees, hungry ducks (which Barney and Thelma-Lou must have surely viewed, in between kisses), and swimming turtles. I also saw some distinctively non-mayberry-esque flora, namely one giant cactus, one biggish redwood, and and a few palm trees. (The palms would have been at home in SC, but not NC). Finally, I saw a group of decidedly non-Mayberry folks enjoying a very Mayberry activity: a group of Hasidic Jews having a picnic. I yearned to join them but we needed to leave so I, sadly, bid adieu to Frankllin Canyon. But not forever. To steal the phrase of a very Non-Californian Californian: I'll be back! I used to have, in fact still do have, unless he's changed his mind, a friend who used to say things like "Do you want to go 't the store." Notice where I placed the apostrophe. He didn't say "Do you want to go t' the store." It's hard to reproduce phonetically, but what it sounded like he was saying was "Do you want to go *at* the store." but shortened, of course. So I think our friend from the digest is onto something. Of course I'm on the plane and have had two complimentary scotches, so that might have somewhat diluted my otherwise clear sleuthical linguistic skills. I've heard, I believe, Andy Taylor use similar parlance, mostly, I think, in season one or two. I'll try to hone in on a specific instance. One thing: People from the chesapeake bay/ norfolk, va talk different. You can hear a little bit of it in Pat Buchanan's speech. A kind of brogue. For instance, he says "aboot" instead of "about," like a canadian., almost. Anyway, I myself try to keep my *at's* and *to's* pretty straight and would much rather talk *to* somebody than *at* them, though I probably do more of the latter than I'd like to admit. Cheers! Searching for Jack Prince
Hello fellow Mayberry-ites, I found a little more info on Jack Prince, but not much. It looks like he recorded three songs with Shep Fields and his Orchestra, all of which were released on the short-lived "Vogue Picture Records" label between May 1946 and April 1947. The songs are: Atlanta, GA I Guess I’ll Get the Papers ( and go home) Whatta Ya Gonna Do! I had never heard of Vogue Picture Records before but their story is a fascinating and colorful slice of Americana. "Waitress"/ a task for trained noticers/ Andy on NPR
It was an unparalleled joy to see Andy on the big screen again in "Waitress." He seemed relaxed and full of the old spark and wit. I highly recommend this movie, even though i agree with Aunt Bee from Orlando that there's a lot of folks doing immoral stuff, which frankly offends me, because I extremely moral if not Saintly. Ok just kidding about that last part. One thing I noticed, but not well enough: In the scene where the eponymous main character Jenna asks Cal, the fry cook if he is happy, we briefly see an old newspaper clipping on the wall which if I'm not mistaken, contains a photo of a mid-60's era Andy Griffith. Can any trained noticers confirm or discount this? letters to TVLand
Back before TAGS was available on DVD, when I was trying to assemble the entire TAGS catalog on VHS, I composed a frustrated email to TVLand asking why they kept editing out some of the best parts of TAGS (Andy and Barney harmonizing, Andy reading Barney's letters home, etc). I then suggested TVLand feature an "unedited Andy" weekend, where they could run entire TAGS episodes in their entirety, unedited. I ended my letter saying "this would be BIG, BIG!!!" I got a nice, if somewhat defensive letter back, pointing out that TVLand edits less material from their shows than other stations who show TAGS. The TVLand emailer then admonished me against using all caps in an email. :) ah well, you can't win em all. (Thankfully, the TAGS DVDs came out shortly thereafter, and I was able to pitch my battered, tattered, painstakingly assembled TAGS VHS tapes in the garbage.) Arthur Smith - Andy Griffith connection
Thanks for the plug on Merlefest, Jeff. I am ecstatic to be at the same festival with folks like the Dillards. Yippee! Look forward to seeing you there. Don, it was a blast to be Arthur Smith's show. I guess in his day he was the Ed Sullivan of the South. Arthur started on WBT radio (the precursor of WBTV), around the same time as the Carter family got their start on the station, so he's been around country music since before there really was anything called country music. Andy Griffith applied for a job on WBT in 1941, but was turned down (little did they know!) Later though, Andy was a guest on Arthur's TV show. Alison Krauss and Union Station were on the same episode I was on, and they played (IIRC) in tshirts and shorts, while Arthur, the old professional, wore a suit and tie. They sounded great though. The latest incarnation of "Carolina Calling" was an attempt by UNC-TV to resurrect the show in a modern setting, but it never gained much traction. I wish I could have seen the show back in its heyday. The song I sang on Arthur's show was "Carolina."
