I bought all the TAGS episodes on DVD a while back when they first came available, but while watching the episodes on TV every day, I'm still seeing scenes I've never seen before. In "Barney's Uniform" tonight, Thelma Lou comes in Andy's house while Barney is in that head harness, and brings him a large malt. I have watched all the episodes many, many times, but I don't remember ever seeing that scene, or a lot of others in episodes. I thought the DVD episodes were suppose to be uncut and unedited? As we all know, TAGS used Ford automobiles in the show, but now and then, we see a Chevy in town. Tonight while watching "The Merchant of Mayberry", near the end of the show, when Ben complains to Andy about a Stevens truck in town, when they show Ben, you see a '59 Chevy turning the corner behind him. They turn the shot back to Andy and Barney, then when they go back to Ben, that same '59 Chevy is coming up the same street.Then in the next shot of Ben, it looks like that same car is backing into a driveway in the background. TV or not TV
Watching the episode, "TV or not TV" and noticed something I hadn't really seen before. When Barney comes in to the courthouse, he puts his rifle into the gun rack. On that rack, is a bar to prevent weapons from being removed when it's locked up, but when Barney puts the rifle in the rack, the bar is closed, and locked. What good is it if you can put the gun in it without opening the bar? Curious, curious. I've always wondered this little tidbit.In "Aunt Bee's Romance", when Andy and Roger Hanover were on the porch talking about whether he might marry Aunt Bee, and Roger said that he would honor Andy's sentiments about marrying Aunt Bee, and he said he might go on to Florida.if he only had the money. He says, "I don't know why my regular check hasn't been forwarded."Why would he expect that when he was only there for a day or two? How would the post office know to forward his check to Andy's house? While watching "The Guitar Player" on TVLand tonight, I noticed the calendar on the wall after Jim Lindsey was arrested. It was a month with 30 days in it, and since there are only a few months with 30 days in it, I wondered which one it was, so I Googled it, and found that the only month in 1960 where the 30th was on Wednesday was November, so this had to be that month. Barney's Replacement
Watching Barney's Replacement episode tonight, and noticed a couple things about it. One, is, they showed Barney showing Bob how to use the siren in the squad car. I don't ever remember seeing that scene before.Also, when Andy pulls up in front of the courthouse, and Bob comes asking about Barney and the Green River Ordinance, Andy has pulled right in front of the fire hydrant. Now, THAT'S against the lawwhat if the fire department needed to use that hydrant right then? First off, I want to thank MeTV for showing the Pilot episode from the Danny Thomas Show, then the first episode of TAGS. While watching the latter, I noticed something I had never paid any attention to before. When Opie is in the kitchen making breakfast for he and Andy, I noticed the pan he was boiling the eggs in was sitting crooked. Something I just noticed watching "Barney's First Car". While they are taking a drive in Barney's car, and all the things going wrong with it, as the center of the steering column starts coming up at Barney, he's watching it while driving, and then grabs the part coming up at him, and the car comes to a stop at that same moment, but you never see him go for the brake. pipe smoking in Mayberry
Ken, I smoked a pipe for several years. It took me awhile to find the blend I liked, but finally settled on two different blends from a tobacco shop in the local mall. One was pretty strong, but I liked the odor, the other one was weaker with a pleasant odor, and the two mixed together made for a perfect blend for me. I quit smoking 15 years ago, though, and feel a lot better for it. Recent episode 106. Why would Andy have Parnell's bank book in his desk drawer? If it had been Parnell's, then why didn't Parnell ask Andy when he gave him the purse back with the money in it, "Where's my bank book?". The artistic weavers reference was in the episode, "If I Had A Quarter Million" if I'm not mistaken. It's the episode where Barney puts the pistol in his belt in back, and tries to take it out quickly, and the gun goes off. Andy tells Barney he'll take his pants to the artistic weavers for him. Quiet Sam
I just noticed something in the Quiet Sam episode I had never thought of before. Here's the situationAndy gets the call from Sam to hurry out to his house to deliver the baby.After Andy gets there, he phones Barney to have him bring Aunt Bee, but Andy gets cut off by Sam, so Barney assumes Andy got caught trying to call him, so Barney tries to form a possie to go out there. Barney shows up at Sams, and after the baby is born, he and Andy go out on the porch. A minute later, Floyd arrives with the other two guys. The question is: How did Barney get out there if Andy had the squad car?Floyd and the "possie" don't show up until Andy and Barney go out onto the porch. Just a thought. I'm from the Indianapolis area myself, but live in Florida now for the last 14 years, and I never miss going to the Mayberry Cafe in Danville, IN every time I come up to visit family. It's a GREAT place to eat, and great atmosphere. I highly recommend it to everyone who visits the Indy area. It's 20 miles west of Indy, but well worth the drive. Mayberry moment
I went to a bluegrass festival yesterday in Dade City, Florida, and one of the bands had a young man who played the fiddle (violin for you classical folks. hehe).At the end of their set, they said that he was taught the fiddle with classical training, and his mother loved it when they would let him show off his talent for that. During that part of the show, after he had played superbly, he went in to playing the TAGS theme.Boy, did I have a smile on my face when he did that. Mayberry really IS everywhere. Here's a good one for all you trained noticers out there. I recieved my replacement dvd's yesterday, and while watching Citizens Arrest today, I noticed something I hadn't noticed before. Right at the beginning of the episode, Andy and Barney are going through some old papers, and Andy finds one where he tells Barney, "Hey, here's something you might want to keep. Look here, custody reciept for the first revolver I issued you. Lookie there. August 1953. Ten years ago last month since I swore you in." Now according to my calculations, and mine are REAL good, that would make Barney starting the Sheriffs office in August 1953, right? Now follow me herethis episode didn't even air until Dec. 16, 1963. Ok, now, in Barney's Uniform episode, which aired AFTER this one, and it aired on Sept. 28, 1964, Barney has to go for a physical to see if he qualifies to stay on the force, and he says he's been with the Sheriffs office 5 years. OK, that would make him starting the force in Aug 1958. Curious, curious.Little discrepency there? Happy New Year
I hope all my Mayberry family and friends have a very happy new year, and be healthy. I too watched a lot of the TZ episodes this past weekend, and enjoy spotting TAGS folks. I love them all, and watch my TAGS dvd's a lot, and the quality of the picture is excellent, in my opinion, and won't deteriorate like tapes will. As far as the laugh tracks, I hadn't noticed any not having them until it was mentioned here, so I went back to listen for them, and although I did miss them when I was listening for them, I don't think it hurts the enjoyment of the episodes for me at all.I wish I had had all the episodes without laugh tracks when I was making all my wav files for our site; it would have made some of them a lot better and easier to listen to.
