40 Acres Sighting

2012-10-07 Thread Janet Anderson
I'm so excited! I just made another 40 Acres sighting. It was on an episode
of Mission Impossible from the first season titled A Spool There Was. In
the last, oh, fifteen minutes maybe, there was some location shooting that I
thought was on the Mayberry lot because I recognized the sides of All Souls
Church in the background. Then later, I caught sight of something more
familiar, grabbed the remote, and hit pause. Before I could say anything, my
12-year-old daughter said, That's Mayberry! I said, Yeah! Do you know what
building that is? She said, It's the courthouse. It was shot from an
angle, and of course the signs were not on the doors, but I recognized it right
away. What surprised me is that my daughter spotted it so quickly without my
cluing her in that it was shot on 40 Acres. I thought that was pretty good!
Anyway, it was fun to see Mayberry show up again on Mission Impossible.

Tonight my daughter and I sat down and watched the first episode of
the first season of Mission: Impossible on DVD. During an outdoor
scene fairly early in the episode, a church was in the background,
and it looked very much like All Souls Church on TAGS. Then I
noticed some storefronts that looked like ones I had seen on
TAGS. One scene had a character hiding in a doorway, and it looked
like the entry to Floyd's barber shop. I didn't know anything about
the show's production, but I was sure these outdoor scenes were shot
on Forty Acres, though it was obvious that some of the storefronts
had been altered. I watched all the way through the credits and saw
that MI was a Desilu production. However, I don't recall anyone
on the digest identifying Mission: Impossible as a show that used
the Forty Acres lot. I know Star Trek had one episode shot there,
plus a Batman show or movie, as well as a couple of films that
have been mentioned. Can anyone confirm for me that these scenes
were shot at Forty Acres?

Hi Janet,

According to Kipp Teague's excellent 40 Acres site:
http://www.retroweb.com/40acres_desilu_years.html it seems that the
first season of Mission: Impossible did indeed use 40 Acres for some
exterior filming. Good noticing!
