Andy Barn
Hey, Mayberry friends. How many times have we seen Andy covering his face or mouth trying to cover laughter at Barney's antics? I'm just wondering, how many times it was scripted or how many times it was real? We all know how well they worked together, and Don Knotts was so funny that it probably broke Andy up, scripted or not. Whatever it was, it adds to the show that we all love. Barn the Bard
One of my favoritesBarney quoting Portia from The Merchant of Venice Scene 1 The quality of mercy is not strain'd It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Which contradicts what Barney says in another episode If there's anything that upsets me, it's having people say I'm sensitive! We all know that Barn was just a teddy bear. WE MISS YOU DON ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
A Touch of Barn
Whilst viewing Opie's Drugstore Job this weekend, I noticed, in the epilogue, that there's a touch of Barney, even though Barney himself is not present! When Goober is talking to Andy, the music played on Goob's exit is actually Barney's theme! (The alternating minor/major third motif played at erratic speed). Perhaps Goob was turning into Barn, or more likely, was showing 'traces' of the Fife genes (Calvin Fife?). I prefer to think it was the subtle way of saying that there's no replacing Barn, and he was/is sorely missed! Makes ya thank! :-) Over and Under, Clyde Barn Epilogue Andy is sitting in the courthouse looking through some files when Goober walks in. He's holding his stomach and Andy asks whats wrong. Goober:Oh a little indigestion I think? Andy:Did ya eat somethin' that didn't agree with ya? Goober:Not really, I had Opie make me a sundae with a pickle on it instead of a cherry! Goober: He gave me the idea the other day so I thought I'd try it. Andy:A pickle? Goober:Yeah, although he said it was a mistake I think he was just thinkin' ahead. You know changes; new taste sensations. Andy:On a strawberry sundae? Goober:Yeah, you know sooner or later somethin's bound to take the place of cherry's, maybe pickles ain't the answer, could be olives but at least let the younger generation have their say! Goober then starts to walk behind Andy holding his stomach. Andy just sits there with a perplexed look on his face. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Up in the Dump with Andy and Barn
I enjoy the episodes when Andy and Barn (and Aunt Bee once) are hanging out at the City Dump. The bent old car parts (Old Buzzy Leonard's, I believe), the Playboy-type mag (BARNEY!! ... although Andy certainly enjoyed a good look or two at the female form) and the all-around messy look. Reminds me of a small town. I also admire the realistic personal touches -- Andy and the girlie mag, Andy ordering a beer and occasionally enjoying a bit of gossip or Andy, Barn and Bee eager to read the second edition of The Mayberry Sun. This helps make them rounded characters, not fake, holier-than-thou plaster saints. The realism aids the humor. Economic Advice from Barn
If there was ever a person who could offer advice for our economic hardships today, it would be Barn. Can you think of all the cost cutting measures that Barn employed to watch his pennies pretty close? Here's some I thought of: 1. Not having the salad AND the shrimp cocktail at Morelli's. 2. Having the special at the diner. 3. Bringing his own lunch to work - or better yet eating free when Aunt Bee brings in lunch. 4. NOT taking the fun girls to a floor show. Sing along with Barn (and me)
Hey, let's have a sing along like Barn and Rafe. Here's the words to Juanita, a one and a two and a here we go.. Nita Juanita, Ask thy soul if we should part Nita Juanita, Lean thou on my heart. Soft o'er the fountain Ring falls the southern moon Far o'er the mountain Breaks the day too soon. In thy dark eyes' splendor Where the warm light loves to dwell Weary looks, yet tender Speak thy fond farewell. (Nita Juanita,) (Let me linger by your side) Nita Juanita, Be my own fair bride. (Nita Juanita,) (Ask thy soul if we should part) Nita Juanita, Lean Thou on my heart... That was great, now dry those tears and decide what to sing next. How bout one we can dance to? Barn/Thel/Nettie
In regard to Barney's quickly turning to another girl after learning of Thelma Lou's marriage, I really feel that after showing how excited he would be to see her again and then seeming so disappointed when he thought she wouldn't be there, he had shown how much he still cared for her. It was embarrassing to him that she had not only married someone else but was apparently happy. It was a shock and it hurt... so when Nettie gave him attention, it was his chance to save face and more or less tell anyone watching... hey, Ole Barn is doing just fine, he's still attractive to women! The Tears Of A clown fits the occasion very well! That is my take on it anyway. Yuall Have A Mayberry Day! Re. Barn-A good son
Yesterday, we changed from being on an old septic system, to city sewers. While watching the workers opening up the old tank, filling it up, then covering the whole thing with dirt, I was thinking of Barney and what a good son he was when he bought his parents a new septic tank for their anniversary. Barn Is Still With Us
Don Knotts has passed on to a much better place. But Barney Fife will never die. He will live on in our memories and in the memories of generations to follow us. Don Knotts created and brilliantly portrayed the most loved and most unforgetable character in television history. Good-bye Barn!
It's a sad day indeed with the passing of my dear Barn.Though I love all the actors and characters of my beloved TAGS,Barney/Don Knotts was my all time favorite. His hilarious charm has brought limitless joy and laughter to my life. From his shaky gun in the movie of the same name to his nervous self in the Ghost and Mr.Chicken, the Apple Dumpling Gang(both movies)along with his underwater antics as Mr.Limpet in the semi animated movie;along with countless times that he lent his voice to characters such as Chicken Little,of late.He was talented, charming, funny, and versatile. He was my own Barney parney poo and I mourn his passing. To take liberties with a TAGS quote if I may,our world will be awful quiet, but won't heaven seem awful full.May God receive you in His glory to rest peacefully.
