Bird loves Andy Griffith

2022-04-25 Thread bjh4757
I read a news article about a Cockatiel who had been missing for three
years. He had flown out an open door of his owner's house. He was
found on a church doorstep. An animal rescue was called to help catch
him and they were able to track down where he previously lived. The
owner said, "Play the Andy Griffith theme song. If he starts singing
and dancing around, that is our bird. He loves that song." So, that is
how they identified the bird. He loved the whistling!

More bird answers

2014-04-12 Thread Paul Mulik
Otis said his wife would be proud as a PEACOCK.

Correct.

When Opie had his sore throat he couldn't SWALLOW

Umm, I don't think that counts.

I think Barney called someone a mean old BUZZARD.

Briscoe calls Ernest T. Bass a lowdown pesky buzzard, and Andy asks Opie Are
you sure you don't have a buzzard in that cage? in episode one.

I think Gomer may have mentioned a BLUEJAY at one time.

Close enough; he said when Bertie Blush talked he sounded just like a jay bird.

Of course there a lot of JAILBIRDS at the courthouse.

Not exactly birds, but OK.

Juanita worked at the BLUEBIRD diner.

Good catch, I didn't think of that one.

I think someone mentioned a BANDY ROOSTER.

Correct, that was Goober describing a noise Gilly Walker's car made. A bantam
is a type of small chicken; I think what Goober actually said was an old banty
rooster.

And maybe a CHICKADEE might have been mentioned.

I don't remember anyone ever mentioning a chickadee.

I'm thinking of three more. Here are a few hints for anybody who might still be
working on this question: one has to do with the carnival, one has to do with
an occupation not available in Mayberry, and one has something to do with a
warning given before a game, or something planted.

And no, people who share their name with a bird such as Robin Hood or Phoebe
or Finch don't count, unless you can come up with a reference to those actual
birds.

One More Bird

2014-04-12 Thread Ken Anderson
I am reading a British novel by Anne Perry and two characters were
describing some women. One was described as a Swan while the other as a
Pelican. It was then I remembered that Opie won the ceramic PELICAN at the
carnival. So my final bird is the PELICAN.

Bird quiz

2014-04-11 Thread Paul Mulik
Nice job everybody on naming several various types of birds mentioned in
Mayberry. Here is a list of the ones correctly named so far:

Albatross
Canary
Chicken (includes roosters)
Crow (both shot at and eaten)
Duck
Eagle
Goose
Hawk
Loon
Mockingbird
Owl
Parakeet
Pheasant
Quail
Songbird
Starling
Turkey

Opie's pet bird in episode #1 is a parakeet (the sponsor doesn't know that
parakeets don't drink coffee), not a canary, however canaries are mentioned in
three other episodes. Which episodes they are, I leave for one of you to name.
In addition to Ollie's goose down pillow, Andy mentions Northern honkers
which is another reference to geese, and in addition to the duck pond, ducks
are also mentioned in Opie and the Carnival (the kind you shoot) and Opie Steps
up in Class (the kind you buy in the store).

I am thinking of seven more types of birds mentioned on TAGS that haven't been
named yet. Put those thinking buckets back on and see if you can come up with
them. One was mentioned a few days ago, but that was before I asked the
question.

Bird in This World

2013-01-12 Thread Ross Windsor
I have heard this saying (You are a bird in this world) here in NC. I grew
up in Greensboro, one hour from Mt. Airy. Many of the comments and sounds Andy
makes are very familiar to me. I'm sure he incorporated many things he heard
growing up. It was just a part of him I imagine. I think the Bird in this
world comment about Barney means You are really something hard to believe!
The golly and the Well I'll be dogged and many others are also things I
grew up hearing. When I hear Andy say them it reminds me of my own Dad, so
that is something special about the show to me. Krista

what the heck that phrase means? Also, does anyone know how many times that

baby bird

2012-02-17 Thread jlj9675
Ken, thank you so much for the heads-up about the baby hummingbird rescue!
That was just about the most precious thing I have ever seen. God bless that
young man for his loving persistence. I wonder if the bird is still a member
of his household still? On another note, I once found a baby bird fallen
out of our tree and no mother nearby so I made arrangements to take it to a
habitat the next day and proceeded to give it water with a dropper and a
worm but was later told that I could have drowned it as it was so young! I
was sick at heart so us laymen sometimes shouldn't proceed on our own.

Bird

An unusual adventure just now!!! Putting away my Halloween things in the
basement, I noticed a sparrow trying to get out the window. How in the
world??? The only possible way in was through the dryer vent. I caught
him when he hit the wall and fell on the cat, who was startled enough to
back away. Of course, I said the appropriate words as I turned him loose
in the yard: OK, Nod, go look for your brothers!!!

T-Bird Car

Hey Dixon, that rare T-Bird car that you just bought on EBay, which way is the
head pointing? You gotta be careful and not get conned on those deals.

Orville Hendricks - Peddling Butter and Eggs. My boy Evan has rare cars too.
It's rare that he does not get caught speeding in one of his cars.

BTW I just bought a rare, mint condition plastic model of the '61
Thunderbird on Ebay. I plan to turn it into the Lady Speeder's car.

Bird story

2010-05-13 Thread Janet Anderson
This morning a little ornithological drama played out on our front porch. A
robin had built her nest inside one of the large shrubs that flank our front
door, and this morning she decided it was time for her fledgling to leave the
nest. She first tried coaxing it out with a nice, juicy worm (well, I'm
assuming it was, anyway). She managed to keep the worm in her beak while
repeatedly calling to her baby, who responded with chirps. Because we had our
windows and doors open, we heard their conversation and noticed that our cats
(who are strictly indoors) were stationed at the screen door, so we watched,
too. It took mama robin many attempts to get little robin to venture to the
edge of the shrub. She then tried to get it to emerge from the shrub by
hopping up on the porch with the worm and calling. All this attracted the
attention of an outdoor neighborhood cat who was soon on our porch and ready to
snatch the little robin. My husband, hero of the day, saved the young bird by
chasing off the cat with a broom (gently, I might add). It took several tries
before it finally gave up. The fledgling left the shrub at last and is
presumably now testing its wings.

Of course, all this remined me of Opie the Birdman. I couldn't help but
think of Wynken, Blynken, and Nod and Opie's realization that he must release
the birds to live their own life, just as the mama would have done. Of course,
there was also the neighbor's cat that gave Andy, Opie, Barney, and Aunt Bee
some anxious moments. And there was the nice, juicy worm that Opie described
to Aunt Bee at the breakfast table.

Like Andy, I used the opportunity to teach my 10-year-old daughter a brief life
lesson, illustrated by the robin's action. I told her that our job as parents
isn't just to provide for her the things she needs but to prepare her for
adulthood so that she's ready to assume the responsibilities of being grown up
when she leaves our nest.

Yes, life is like Mayberry!

to send you a couple of pics. Just email me.

Got a part-time job yesterday at our largest super-market in town. I am a

Got to practice my training. Paper or Plastic? Paper or Plastic? Got that
down pretty good. Now if I can just remember it.

Them's fine bird names!

2007-05-08 Thread ctygrl821
Hi all...thanks for the suggestions for bird names for my baby bluebirds out
back!
Keep 'em comin'..I love the ideas!

Sam in Knoxville, I agree...Winken, Blinken and Nod are good ones (them's fine
bird names...) Thanks :)

And, Kim in TX, yes, naming the chicks after Andy, Opie and Aunt Bee are also
fine bird names! Thanks :)
I happened to think of Mary Grace, after Thel's cousin, or even Karen, the
other cousin that was a sharp shooter (not of birds, of course)..only CLAY
pigeons!
That is, if there are several females in the brood!

If we are lucky enough to see the little ones as they take their first flight,
I'll be sure and see how many there are and if we can identify males or
females. Hopefully, I will be able to catch a glimpse of them very soon. They
seem to be getting bigger each day, as they are chirping louder and louder as
Dad Barney and Mom Thelma Lou make numerous trips to the house toting nice
juicy worms or crunchy bugs in their beaks. And, after these little ones are
raised, I think Barn should treat Thel to a nice dinner for two (no dutch
treat) at Morelii's...steak sandwich time, with soup AND salad...after all,
Thel has been such a good Mom.
Or, perhaps they could even go to the Bluebird Diner!?! Wonder if bluebirds
dine at the Bluebird Diner? I bet they do. Was the diner where Juanita worked
called the Bluebird Diner? Did Thel ever dine there? I bet not.

Until next time...the tale of Barney and Thelma Lou the Bluebird pair, along
with the little Fifes, continues...in my back yardkeep the ideas comin',
all. Thanks :)
