Correct, a GRASSHOPPER is mentioned in Quiet Sam. Goober also once claimed to have caught three fish on the same grasshopper. Doesn't it seem like Andy and Barney would have been awfully young to have been dissecting things in 1938? At their class reunion a banner gave their year or graduation as 1948. They would have been in second grade! (Note: in another episode they were said to be in the class of 1944). According to Mayor Pike, the old oak tree is full of TWIG GIRDLERS, not termites. It seems like this topic has run its course, so I'll give the others I was thinking of: Andy says that a woman running for council will stir up a right good sized HORNET'S nest Aunt Bee tells Captain Barker that if Andy misses a meal, he's meaner than a bear that backed into a BEE hive When Aunt Bee first arrives in town, Andy promises that she and Opie will be closer than two FLEAS in a dog's ear Opie, misunderstanding the word "tortilla," thinks South Americans eat TARANTULAS In several episodes a VW BUG (Volkswagen Beetle) can be seen on the streets of Mayberry. Since the Ford Motor Company provided nearly all of the cars seen on TAGS, this VW most likely belonged to a crew member. The cast and crew were sometimes asked to park on the 40 Acres back lot for scenes that required several cars in the background. Great job coming up with more types of bugs. The green-eyed monster and the love bug were the imaginary biting bugs I had in mind. Here is a list of all the bugs named since I started this thread. I hope I didn't forget any: ANTS that Clara feared would be attracted by spilled grease. Opie wanted to bring them home and make an ant farm, but Aunt Bee promptly vetoed that idea. APHIDS Mr. Wheeler noticed on Aunt Bee's roses; Also mentioned in the "prize rose" episode "Bug" (microphone) Opie planted in the jail cell "Bug" (virus or similar) that Barney was afraid would get down in his lair-nix Barney insisted that any normal person could tell that the ink blot test was a BUTTERFLY CENTIPEDE, that's a bug with a hundred legs FIREBUG, a name Uncle Ollie called the man who parked by a hydrant Doggone FIREFLY that Otis claimed knocked him down FLY that Andy swatted on Helen's back. Flies are also mentioned in other episodes (Back to Nature, The Pickle Story, Man's Best Friend etc.) Gomer apparently thought that a GREEN-EYED MONSTER was a type of bug, and not a metaphor for jealousy Briscoe claimed that Andy and Opie didn't eat enough to keep a JUNE BUG alive. Gonna be another hot one. Hear them LOCUSTS? Andy advised Opie to treat girls as nicely as possible, and after that the LOVE BUG might bite You don't want a bat or a MOTH in your hair. They get tangled up and lay their eggs and you go crazy. If a was a SPIDER, that's where I'd go. Unspecified bugs Opie prepared for baby birds, and the ones that hit the Darling boy that sat on the hood of the truck holding a lantern Here are more hints on others that haven't been named yet: a certain tree in town is said to have an infestation, and the "homes" of two different stinging insects are mentioned in two early episodes. Hey all, So many bugs in Mayberry have already been mentioned, but wasn't "the love-bug" mentioned at one time too? It seems to me that it was, but if it wasn't, it should have been, what with that duck pond being so near and handy. Also Opie once caught a fly while sitting in a church service. Nice job everybody on naming more kinds of bugs mentioned in Mayberry. I had forgotten about Darlene Mason's discussion about fireflies. That didn't happen in Mayberry but it was mentioned aloud so that's good enough. I had also forgotten Brisco's mentioning a June bug, and the "bugged" cell. Here is an updated list: Aphid Bug Barney feared would get down in his "lair-nix" Bug in cell (The Tape Recorder) Bugs Opie served to birds Centipede Firebug Fireflies Fly June bug Moth Spider I'm still thinking of nine more that haven't been named yet. Hi Gang, Haven't received a digest in two days either, so I went to the Archive site to see if anything new was there, and there WAS!! Recently I asked if folks could name all of the various types of bugs seen or mentioned in Mayberry. Here are the correct answers so far: Fly Aphid Centipede Spider Unknown bugs Opie served to baby birds "Aunt Bee" is not a bug. Bee does not count unless someone comes up with a reference to an actual bee, and yes there is at least one in the series. Spelling or quilting bees do not count either. Someone mentioned fireflies, and while the folks in Mayberry would almost certainly have enjoyed watching or catching those, I can't think of a time they were specifically mentioned on the show. Somebody help me out on that one. There are still at least ten more kinds of bugs. Hint: in some cases the word "bug" is actually spoken. I thought of the following "bug" referrals - Fly - Andy was trying to swat one in the courthouse - Spiders - There were spiders under the old bandstand and Gomer tried to hit one with a hammer. - Centipede - Barney didn't believe it when Andy told Opie about the insect with one hundred legs. - Aphids - Mr. Wheeler supposedly saw aphids on Aunt Bee's roses - Bugs - Opie was trying to catch bugs and worms to feed his birds - Fireflies - Opie would go out at night to catch fireflies - And of course, we can't forget the most famous reference: Aunt BEE --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Clark Gable, Bugs Bunny, and TAGS
>>>Clark Gable, Bugs Bunny, and TAGS -- In one brief scene of a movie, all 3 of >>>these subjects are tied together. Can you name the scene and the movie?<<< Well, the only thing that comes to mind is the hitchhiking scene from "It Happened One Night" where Clark Gable is trying to show Claudette Colbert the fine art of hitching a ride with the thumb. He is chewing on a carrot all the while, and I read one time that this was the inspiration for Bugs Bunny (who would come later) eating a carrot while he talked. I can't make a direct connection to TAGS, but Gable's braggadocio in lecturing Colbert on hitchhiking and the way she bested him so easily does remind me very much of how Barney and Andy (or Barney and other characters) often interacted on TAGS. The only other connection I can come up with is that the man who eventually picked them up was played by Alan Hale, the father of Alan Hale, Jr., who played farmer Jeff Pruitt on TAGS.
