LEAST FAVORITE EPISODE
All of us know that any episode of Andy is better that anything that tries to pass for comedy in today's television, but we also know some episodes were better than others. I know this is going to start a controversy, but while watching "The Senior Play", (which I think is pretty poorly done), I got to thinking, which episode of Andy is the absolute worst? My vote is for either "The Senior Play", or the one where Howard goes to the island. Both of them have very llittle to do with the main characters of Andy, I guess that is why I do not like them. Don't get me wrong, I would watch "The Senior Play" every day before I would watch "Samantha Who", but it is not my favorite. Orville Hendricks - I sell butter and eggs. David, I must admit to being what some people call a Mayberry snob. I have never really cared for the color episodes and only have the B&W on DVD. I watched all of the color episodes when they originally aired in the 60's (I'm 53) and still watch a few today but am not as familiar with them as I am to the first 5 years of TAGS. I love all of the B&W shows but if I had to name my least favorite, it would have to be Prisoner of Love. I just didn't care for the story line of Andy almost falling for the beautiful lady prisoner. Seemed out of character to me. I hope we are not breaking any digest negativity rules by discussing negative opinions. Wouldn't want to get in trouble with the head mountie. Just watched "Andy and the Woman Speeder". This was not one of my favorite episodes as the woman made a mockery of system and it made the others look dumb. I would have to say that my least favorite episode would have to be "Aunt Bee's Big Moment". The episode just does not have a Mayberry feel to it. As far as a least favorite B&W episode, I would have to submit "Andy and Opie- Housekeepers" as the premise of the episode was rather thin and overplayed. Especially, the alternate cleaning up/dirtying up of the house seemed vaguely irritating. The payoff, though was funny when Clara Edwards stormed out of the house in indignation after her cleaning efforts were discounted! I'll have to do some thinking to find a specific episode that is my least favorite, but I can say that it is probably going to be an episode without Don Knotts in the cast. It's been a little over 50 years, but would you believe it still bothers me that Don Knotts did not continue with TAGS. My least favorite and in truth, downright disliked episode is the one in which Fred and Jenny Boone are always fighting. I hate the whole concept that a married couple would be so ornery with one another and actually like it. I think the writers were scratching the bottom of the barrel and stretching it. I love all episodes but the least one is Prisoner of Love with Susan Oliver. I cant stand a woman who uses her beauty to sway for favoritism and special favors. I expected Barney to cave in but when it came to Andy , I was real ill with him. First he shouldnt have been in the cell ALONE with her and then when their lips about met. well that made me real ill with the writers of that episode. That scene was way out of line with the general theme of the show. I could go on about that episode but yall know it as well as I do. Was the one where they house the female thief overnite. The whole thing felt out of wack. While you know Barney will fall all over himself over a pretty face you espected better of Andy. When I asked about least favorite episodes, it was not my intent to offend anyone or bring any negativity to this site. My wife and I are huge TAGS fans and we have always enjoyed this site. I was just curious as I figured each of us has his or her favorite episodes as well as least favorites. I enjoy hearing some discussion on different topics regarding TAGS as well as the occasional trivia question. After all, if we were all talking face to face wouldn't some of these issues come up? It seems like there are a lot of "alumni sighting" posts which is ok, but I like to hear opinions and discussion about other things that are TAGS related. Again I meant no disrespect to Mr. Newsome and all of the TAGS fans on this sight. I definitely agree that no matter what episode of TAGS, I'd rather be watching it than almost anything else (certainly more than anything on today). But there are some episodes in which I detect just the least flat note. The main one that always comes to mind and that I always name is episode 243, "Aunt Bee's Big Moment," when she learns to fly. Now, I love aviation, and I love TAGS, but it's hard for me to believe the writers weren't grasping for ideas—especially since Aunt Bee only learned to drive in season six (in an episode I like much more). Of course, there are some humorous moments in the episode (Goober's pancake-eating triumph comes to mind, along with Andy's fourth-string-in status in the big football game). What's interesting is that episode 235, "Howard's New Life," is a minor favorite of mine even though it likewise features a somewhat unrealistic plot. In fact, the gruff line "Wanna buy a ship in a bottle?" is probably in my family's top 100 most-quoted TAGS lines. I dislike any episode where Andy and Barney go gaga over a girl. The fun girls also come to mind. I, personally, was never terribly fond of the episodes with Howard's mother. She just seemed overbearing, in my opinion. (Plus, she reminds me way TOO much of my ex-mother-in-law.)
