Politically Incorrect
One of the politically incorrect stories on TAGS that no one has mentioned is Fred and Jenny Boone. Andy seemed to take a "no big deal" attitude to all their fighting. Today, domestic violence is all over the news. When a police force come to a house where a spouse has been attacked, someone is going to jail.None of this "Morning Dear". Now a days, Fred and Jenny would both be behind bars for assault for what they did. It's not politically incorrect, per se, but I always cringe a bit when Andy invites someone over for a meal without conferring with Aunt Bee. Don "Cream Puff" Good ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Tonight's episode was the barbershop/manicurist episode. Hardly anything in it was "politically correct" by today's standards. But then I imagine many of us were "guilty" of some sort of identification with those guys back in the day... Sent from my iPad ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Re: Being Politically Incorrect in Mayberry
What about Mayberry's little fat mayor. Can you just imagine someone on a city council today getting away with saying ".making fun of our little fat mayor." ? Harriet, the chicken thief, hiding out in Kelsey's Woods, USA Johnny Paul Jason says chewing tar is good for the teeth..That's an old wives taleJohnny Paul ain't married. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

To me, the most politically incorrect moment in the series is when the men in the barbershop are ogling Ellen Brown as she gets off the bus. The mayor asks Barney, "Do you think you could handle a girl like that?" and Barney replies, "Well, I'd be inclined to treat a girl like that a little bit rough. They expect it; you know, let 'em know right off who's boss. Rough 'em up a little bit." Of course it is hard to picture Barney roughing up ANYBODY, but the scene is still in bad taste by 2016 standards. It's not surprising that it is cut out of broadcast versions. There was probably something politically incorrect, according to today's standards, in just about every episode. One episode that stands out is "Ellie Runs for Council" . In that episode Otis told Andy to "never apologize to a woman" and "if you want results, hit her in the mouth with a leg of lamb!" Andy also commented that they ( the men) control the purse strings. In another episode, Barney was putting up wanted posters and Andy made reference to seemingly petty crimes such as "chicken thieves and wife beaters". The show often made light of such issues as alcoholism and domestic violence for comedic reasons of course. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

I say thank God the statement made to a wife "he hardly ever hits you" is not promoted on TV today. I was married in the 60's to a wife beater and believe me it is nothing to joke about . In those days the police could not interfere with domestic problems and my husband took full advantage of that . When the movie "the burning bed" came out I wished I had thought of it! There is nothing scarier than someone twice your size and strength pounding on you mercilessly and he did it just because he could, no reason. I too have noticed things mentioned on the show that, while maybe were fine in the 1960's, certainly raise an eyebrow now... I contend that the only curse word ever uttered on the entire show was said by Rafe Hollister in "Rafe Hollister Sings". Watch it on Youtube here and pay close attention at 15:40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_9QalbM9FE Andy: ...address up on Willow Creek Road Rafe: Moonshinin'? Last April uz't? (was it) Andy: Yeah Rafe: 'el that's me! (Hell, that's me) You took me in 'bout then... Y'all listen and see if you think so. I think Jack Prince (Rafe) was such a good actor and had the vernacular and 'sech as 'zat' down so well, it almost slips by you. Rafe is probably my single most favorite character on the show. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

I can think of a few myself, but I'll just two at this time. In the episode when the lawyer came to town and was Andy's deputy for a while he came up with a statistical chart about crimes that could happen in Mayberry. He brought up wife beating. The phone rang and someone reported that a man had given his wife a beating. This evoked a laugh. The other one is when Ellie was running for city council and the women picketed in front of the courthouse. Andy told them to go home and rest. The other thing in this episode was the fact that the men controlled the money in the marriage. I was watching an episode of Gunsmoke and it was about a stagecoach carrying money was coming to town. The bad guy was hypnotizing Festus, who I think was a deputy, to find out when it was coming. This put me in mind of the armored car episode on TAGS. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

It has been a while since we have had a good discussion about Andy, and today I got to thinking. We all know that TAGS was made back in the 60's, and things were a lot different in the 60's.But when I am watching Andy and they say something politically incorrect, my ears will perk up instantly. Several things were said on Andy that absolutely could not be said on television today.Like the time Charlene was going to divorce her husband, and Briscoe came to town to give her a lecture.Briscoe told Charlene "You have got a husband that hardly ever hits you". Let me tell you, that absolutely would not be allowed in 21st century television. I know there are more examples, and it might be fun to see if anyone else can come up with an example of something that could not be said on television today. In Barney's Room episode, when Ms. Mendlebright says she's getting married, Barney says he hopes it ends in a quickie Mexican divorce . That probably wouldn't be the best choice of words now days. On another note, does anyone on the digest know of an active TAGS Chapter in North Central Arkansas or South Central Missouri? I've talked to a few people who would be interested in starting a new chapter but we were just wandering if there was any group that was active close to our area that we weren't aware of. While watching a 1930's movie on TCM last week, one of the characters used the term Negro. Now a days when you hear something like that it jars you for just a second, since you are not used to hearing it on TV. It got me to thinking about TAGS and being politically incorrect. I know that TAGS phased out Otis towards the end because it was no longer funny to make fun of an alcoholic. And in the episode about Colonel Harvey's Elixer, both Colonel Harvey and Barney used the phrase Indian, when now a days everyone says Native American. Can anyone think of any other instances of TAGS being politically incorrect? Why did Andy Griffith Drop the Accent and was Aunt Bee Politically Incorrect?
I never learn why it was Andy Grifith by early 60s dropped his famous hillbilly backwoods image made famous in No Time For Sergants. When the Mayberry Series debuted in 1960 the image was intact then in a year he settled in without the accent and the crackerbarrell physlosophy.Personally to me seeing him evolved to a more straight playing comic performer was a stroke of luck.I have among my 2000 videos 400 episodes of one of my all time tv shows What's My Line an american tv insitution from 50s and 60s.Andy on his 1957 stint as mystery guest is a sheer joy a cut up top up and coming comedian .He brought the house down with his backwoods accented humor.Fast forward to 1965 and 1967 guest shots he is a grimmer more sedated somber actor comedian we came to love.If anyone knows why he changed his persona please let me know.I'm just curious.Either way Andy is still just great a seasonial pro On Aunt Bee. Mention Goobers Contest there was another scene Tvland has edited out and I'm guessing its due to the changing of times.Aunt Bee won 5.00 at Wallys Station .Prior she told Opie she never won anythng in her life.Opie figured if you win something in a raffle you only have to donate it to the Church.Aunt Bee reminded him. Criticizing the Church was sacrilege. Was she politically incorrect by todays standards by todays standards that line is always deleted.if so I've see this before.Gary Coleman for instance in. A 1977 appearence on The Jeffersons in a memorable episode. Before he went on to Diffrent Strokes said to George Jefferson You must have been a Retard.these days the line is omitted and now thru redubbing he says You must have been rattle brained.Just changes in the poltical climate.its not a complaint .far from it its just an observation of times changing.I like any healthy feedback on both topics. And with that as my friend Col Tim once said.
