Preaching

2017-08-08 Thread Paul Pyle
As a "preachers kid" who experienced a preachers life (46 years in ministry)
throughout eastern and south eastern Ohio, I've seen years of variations on
this. It really is not only a regional term but a generational term that is
seldom heard today. In my experience I most often heard people refer to my
father as "Reverend Pyle" except for the time spent as a Captain in the
Salvation Army. The time I most often heard my father addressed as
"Preacher" was from people who would have been considered my father's elders
(generational). I often heard "Going to preaching" in the 50's and early
60's in my life, and it just meant going to church.

Times have certainly changed, becoming more informal. Never hear 'Reverend'
anymore (as least in Protestant circles), being replaced by the more
informal "Pastor." I suspect that "Preacher" and "preaching" is more often
heard in the south today.

2017-08-08 Thread Sonya Palmer
As was mentioned by others, preaching was a term that was used to differentiate
the sermon portion of Sunday morning services from Sunday school.  Today the
more commonly used term is worship service, but that didn't seem to gain
popularity until the last 20 years or so.  Preaching is probably used more
frequently in the south.

Paul, that's interesting. I hadn't ever thought about it that way. I just
always assumed it was a regional expression.

I grew up in a small town, Tunkhannock Pennsylvania we walked to the Church for
services and the children went to Sunday School at 10:00 and the adults went to
Preaching at 11:00 of course you could go to both but if you were only going to
the 11:00 service you said you were going to Preaching as opposed to Sunday
School.

Regarding Paul's comments about "preaching". In Opie's Newspaper episode
when Andy went looking for the gossip newspaper at Reverend Tucker's, Andy
called the Reverend "Preacher" three times.

RE: Going to preaching

2017-08-07 Thread Good, Don
I always found it a bit odd that Andy referred to church services as
"preaching." For example, in Sermon for Today, when Aunt Bee is talking to
Clara on the phone, Andy asks her, "I'm goin' to preachin'. You comin'?"
Maybe this is a Southern expression. I've never heard it outside of TAGS

Growing up in NC in the 60s, we occasionally referred to church as "preaching"
so I never thought much about it. It doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't an
every Sunday thing.

Paul Mulik, I'm from a little bit further south than Mt. Airy and I've been
going to preaching all my life. Matter of fact, I went yesterday. It comes
from the fact there were 2 elements to a Sunday morning service. First, you
had Sunday School followed by preaching.

2011-08-30 Thread Mike
HI GANG!! *sigh**

Rule 2, Rule 2..Thanks to Aunt Bee in Orlando and others who have
expressed what I have put off for several hours in writing. I get up at
4:30am, go in at 5 and get off and 1pm, and one of the things I look forward to
when I get home is logging into the bulletin board. One thing I will not put
up with however, is being PREACHED at on here in attempt to show your
intellectual superiority.. I think most lovers of TAGS know their characters
by the characters name, so referring to them in that manner is really cool, and
at least they are talking about our favorite show in that fashion and shouldn't
have to go do a bunch of research to make it politically correct. This is not
the place for soap boxes, leave that on the shelves in the store. Like I said,
when I read that at 1:15 this afternoon I was so mad I purposely put off
replying until I cooled off. Same goes with the complaints about TVland, we've
sung that song and dance before and they WILL show our show again. If we don't
like their other shows, don't watch and leave it at that. This board is no
place for venting those feelings.

Now to the business at hand, TAGS is shown here everyday on WTTV, Channel 4 in
Indy at 8am, two episodes. They showed the one today where Opie got the job at
the store and then lied to get fired to help out the other boy who needed to
pay bills. A great message in that show and example of the compassion Opie had
for others. TAGS really had the best writers of any show in those days!

Have a great day folks and lets talk TAGS and leaving the dry as dust preaching
to Rev. Tucker!!
