RE: "Rafe", Janine, & Ken
Like Jeff said, I could easily imagine that dialogue between Andy and Floyd submitted by "Rafe" - well done. Also glad to see you're going to be back in action this summer, Ken. Does anyone know if the actor portraying Rafe Hollister had a son who became an actor? Vell now, if'n old Rafe vas a Norvegian den he vould have said Vell and ve vould not have known vat he meant, by golly, you betcha, I have been having a great time doing my Mayberry presentation. I have scheduled five in the past few weeks. I have one coming up on January 9 in the small town where I taught for 30 years. I will be the entertainment for the Fire Department's Annual Meeting and Banquet. That will be loads of fun as I know many of the fire fighters and first responders there, some of who were former students of mine. I did my presentation this past week at a new retirement community and that went very well. A very good turnout and when I was done a lady came up to me and told me she was from my home town. So we had a nice visit as we know many of the same people. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 16, Issue 311 - What Rafe said
I've mentioned this before and I'll go out on a limb and mention it again. I really do NOT think Rafe said what some seem to think, and here's why: Growing up, my dad would give half a laugh or a partial chuckle at something that amused him and begin his reply with "Well". Many times, he'd start to say "Well" and the half a laugh would slip itself in. So rather than, "Heh, well", it would come out, "We-heh-ll". I remember that from 60 years ago and to this day, it'll still come about. The very first time I heard Rafe utter that, I recognized it as the same sounding reply my dad used. I'm not being obtuse, just my observance from my detective training. I have not watched it with CC turned on, so I don't know what they script on the screen. In fact, I catch myself doing the same thing on occasions. Ron **Barn McLendon ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Rafe Hollister Sings
Rafe Hollister Sings As a child I was led to believe that four letter word was as bad as the other four letter words. Maybe what is shocking to some it that some think Rafe cursed while using I the word. I don't know. When I was a kid, and now I understand, it was just that some adults in my environment didnt like the sound of children cursing and using even the more mild forms of four letter words. I even got reprehended for saying "Oh crap". What about saying Oh Nuts! ? Interestingly enough, it was the same adults in my environment who cursed too often and unnecessarily. Even then I thought that. I think what we are questioning is akin to Andy reprimanding Opie for saying "snoot full", when referring to Otis being drunk. My other thought is that there was a lot of things in Mayberry that I am surprised that do not bring up the same "moral" issues. They would have even more validly than someone saying ach e double L. Like the song Salty Dog for instance. Ever researched that song? Maybe I should start taking notes like Barney would, and get back to you all with an "official report". If things may seem risqué or questionable on a moral basis, I think it was done to prove a point and in good taste, meaning and with "modesty". It disheartens me a bit to see moulages being made in Mayberry, or things in general, being taken out of context. And yes my education was worth every penny. ;-) Patty Haley aka "Millie" San Diego, CA ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Rafe Hollister and a recipe I found
Well, let me just say this, a lot of people down here say things with well in them and drop off the W, its very common. And saying "well hey" will come out "ull-a". Nuff said on that. On another note, I checked out a cookbook from the library, and it had, lo and behold, a recipe for fish muddle! For those who wonder, it's a stew/soup common in North Carolina, kind of like chowder (the kind with the tomato base). Rafe Hollister(Jack Prince)
Here is something I found that I thought was interesting: Date of Birth 19 January 1920, Shreveport, Louisiana, USA Date of Death 8 January 1994, San Bernardino County, California, USA Birth Name John Upchurch Mini Biography Jack Prince, whose birth name was John Upchurch, was trained in singing at an early age. Prince appeared on Broadway in the 1950s in main and understudy/replacement roles in at least three musicals: "Guys and Dolls" (1950-1953), as "Nicely Nicely Johnson", "Lil' Abner" (1956-1958) as "Marryin' Sam", and "Destry Rides Again" (1959-1960) as Tom Destry's sidekick "Wash". It was in "Destry", in which Prince sang two songs, that he made the acquaintance of Andy Griffith, who had the title role (and who earned a Tony nomination for his performance). When "The Andy Griffith Show" started on TV in the early 1960's, Griffith asked Prince to appear in a few episodes. Prince, who first appeared in two minor roles on the show, was best-known, and is best-remembered today, for his role of Rafe Hollister". Griffith wanted Prince to have a larger role in the series, but Prince declined, feeling that it would take him away from what was then a successful singing career. Prince continued to perform in the theater and work the nightclub circuit. Not much can be found about him during the 1970s and 1980s. His last known appearance was on TNN's "Nashville Now!" in September of 1991, which was a reunion of many of "The Andy Griffith Show" cast members. Prince received a standing ovation for the two songs he sang. Prince is interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands, California. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Rafe Hollister expletive?
In the episode "Rafe Hollister Sings", has anyone besides me ever noticed the word that Rafe uses when he tells Andy that he is the prisoner that Andy says was released without getting his new suit of clothes? It sounds awfully close to "_ell, that's me!" I think I hear an "H", though. Growing up, I used to hear people begin a sentence with " ell " as in " Ell let's go." They probably used " ell" instead of "well." But I don't think that's what Rafe said. It's not offensive but I was wondering why it wasn't censored in 1963.
