Like Jeff said, I could easily imagine that dialogue between Andy and Floyd
submitted by "Rafe" - well done.

Also glad to see you're going to be back in action this summer, Ken. I
never could figure out how you were able to manage all those appearances in
the pre-COVID days.

And Janine - hope you're doing a lot better.

Rafe Hollister

2016-11-06 Thread Janine L Johnson
Does anyone know if the actor portraying Rafe Hollister had a son who
became an actor? I saw an episode of Major Crimes and this character (a
bad guy) resembled him so very much I instantly thought of Rafe. Didn't
catch the credits so can't look him up either.

I have been having a great time doing my Mayberry presentation. I have
scheduled five in the past few weeks. I have one coming up on January 9
in the small town where I taught for 30 years. I will be the entertainment
for the Fire Department's Annual Meeting and Banquet. That will be loads
of fun as I know many of the fire fighters and first responders there, some
of who were former students of mine. I did my presentation this past week
at a new retirement community and that went very well. A very good turnout
and when I was done a lady came up to me and told me she was from
my home town. So we had a nice visit as we know many of the same people.

I figured it out without a doubt. Say both words out loud, and notice the

position of your lips when saying the bad word vs. when you say the word

well.. Then compare them to Rafes lip position when he says the word. He

said the bad word for sure. Anyone who can reads lips will tell you that.

Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 16, Issue 311 - What Rafe said

2015-12-10 Thread Ron McLendon
I've mentioned this before and I'll go out on a limb and mention it again.
I really do NOT think Rafe said what some seem to think, and here's why:

Growing up, my dad would give half a laugh or a partial chuckle at something
that amused him and begin his reply with "Well". Many times, he'd start to
say "Well" and the half a laugh would slip itself in. So rather than, "Heh,
well", it would come out, "We-heh-ll". I remember that from 60 years ago
and to this day, it'll still come about. The very first time I heard Rafe
utter that, I recognized it as the same sounding reply my dad used. I'm not
being obtuse, just my observance from my detective training. I have not
watched it with CC turned on, so I don't know what they script on the
screen.

In fact, I catch myself doing the same thing on occasions.

Rafe Hollister Sings

2015-10-03 Thread Patricia Haley

Rafe Hollister Sings

As a child I was led to believe that four letter word was as bad as the
other four letter words. Maybe what is shocking to some it that some think
Rafe cursed while using I the word. I don't know.

When I was a kid, and now I understand, it was just that some adults in my
environment didn’t like the sound of children cursing and using even the
more mild forms of four letter words. I even got reprehended for saying "Oh
crap". What about saying Oh Nuts! ?

Interestingly enough, it was the same adults in my environment who cursed
too often and unnecessarily. Even then I thought that.

I think what we are questioning is akin to Andy reprimanding Opie for saying
"snoot full", when referring to Otis being drunk.

My other thought is that there was a lot of things in Mayberry that I am
surprised that do not bring up the same "moral" issues. They would have even
more validly than someone saying ach e double L. Like the song Salty Dog
for instance. Ever researched that song? Maybe I should start taking notes
like Barney would, and get back to you all with an "official report".

If things may seem risqué or questionable on a moral basis, I think it was
done to prove a point and in good taste, meaning and with "modesty". It
disheartens me a bit to see moulages being made in Mayberry, or things in
general, being taken out of context.

And yes my education was worth every penny. ;-)

do you want to do that?” Otis replied, “Aw, she hasn’t spoken to me in

that.” “Why not?” asked Otis. “Well,” said Rafe, “Those kind of wives are

Rafe Hollister's Shot

2013-01-10 Thread Ken Anderson
Tonight I watched the episode where Nurse Mary was try to give Rafe
Hollister his shot. I always laugh when I hear Rafe's explanation of why
he doesn't need a shot. He cites the fact that his daddy lived to an old
age. I sort of feel the same way about medicine. I am very fortunate to
have come from a family of long livers. My grandpa's liver was 28 inches
long and my daddy's liver was actually 30 inches long.

Sorry about that but not much to do in the frozen north country here. Our
lutefisk raffles are all over and our frozen lefsa frisbee contests are
done so I have a lot of time on my hand.

2011-01-28 Thread jgrit1
Watching Americian Idol lasst night, I got a flashback to Rafe Hollister trying
out and performing at the Chorale.

There were socalled polished singers, like Barney, who were awful.

Then, in walked a country boy in bibbed overalls. He was a cross between the
Darling Boys and Rafe. He had a big cowboy type hat, a tank-top shirt, and his
signature overalls. The guy was from not too-far from Mayberry--Cheatham
County Tenessee. The clinchers were his name and his tone, that sounded alot
like Rafe. They guys last name is Dillard. Watch for him.

Rafe Hollister and a recipe I found

2009-07-30 Thread Janet Leanda Bowlin
Well, let me just say this, a lot of people down here say things with well in
them and drop off the W, its very common. And saying "well hey" will come out
"ull-a". Nuff said on that.

On another note, I checked out a cookbook from the library, and it had, lo and
behold, a recipe for fish muddle! For those who wonder, it's a stew/soup
common in North Carolina, kind of like chowder (the kind with the tomato base).
I ordered the cookbook from Amazon, so if anyone gets a hankering for it, just

Ginger, I won't tell you you're wrong, because I'm not sure we can definitively
answer that. When I listen to his line, I don't hear the "h" sound. He says
it rather fast, and it sounds like he's dropping off something at the
beginning. So he might have actually been saying, "Well, that's me!" That's
what I always assumed, anyway, until someone on the digest thought otherwise.

Rafe Hollister(Jack Prince)

2009-05-13 Thread Rick
Here is something I found that I thought was interesting:
Date of Birth 19 January 1920, Shreveport, Louisiana, USA

Date of Death 8 January 1994, San Bernardino County, California, USA

Birth Name John Upchurch

Mini Biography
Jack Prince, whose birth name was John Upchurch, was trained in singing at an
early age.

Prince appeared on Broadway in the 1950s in main and understudy/replacement
roles in at least three musicals: "Guys and Dolls" (1950-1953), as "Nicely
Nicely Johnson", "Lil' Abner" (1956-1958) as "Marryin' Sam", and "Destry Rides
Again" (1959-1960) as Tom Destry's sidekick "Wash".

It was in "Destry", in which Prince sang two songs, that he made the
acquaintance of Andy Griffith, who had the title role (and who earned a Tony
nomination for his performance). When "The Andy Griffith Show" started on TV in
the early 1960's, Griffith asked Prince to appear in a few episodes. Prince,
who first appeared in two minor roles on the show, was best-known, and is
best-remembered today, for his role of Rafe Hollister". Griffith wanted Prince
to have a larger role in the series, but Prince declined, feeling that it would
take him away from what was then a successful singing career.

Prince continued to perform in the theater and work the nightclub circuit. Not
much can be found about him during the 1970s and 1980s. His last known
appearance was on TNN's "Nashville Now!" in September of 1991, which was a
reunion of many of "The Andy Griffith Show" cast members. Prince received a
standing ovation for the two songs he sang.

Prince is interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands, California.

close is if you notice Jack Prince's characters are the only characters you

Rafe Hollister Sings

2007-02-08 Thread keepsake68
Hey again, Mayberrians!

I was watching Rafe Hollister Sings. I am not sure if that was his real voice
or not, but the singing sounds great. On the song "That Lonesome Road" (I guess
that of the song..lol,) Rafe sounds a little bit like Elvis Presley. As you
know, Elvis could really sing some great gospel songs.

Take care,

Rafe "bad" word

2006-02-13 Thread Oliver, Michael J
Hi all,

I think this subject should be over. It seems that some are bound and
determined to scar the purity of our wonderful show, so I say fine,
believe what you want, but I keep my faith. As far as the DVD "insert",
no offense, but that is about the most ridiculous thing I have ever
heard. I seriously doubt that in all the years that TAGS has been on
and all of the videos and DVD made of the episodes that they managed to
"cover up" this word. I think its time to NIP IT IN THE BUD.

God Bless

Michael Oliver

Rafe

2006-02-09 Thread Randy Moffett
I didn't mean cause a big milange. I just wondered if anybody else had noticed.
I wanted to make sure, so last night I pulled out my brand new boxed set of
DVD's and played that part over and over until I came to the conclusion that
Rafe was really saying, "Hal, that's me!" I don't know what "hal" means. It
could be a contraction of "huh well" with a little Mayberry twang. I'm sure it
was not anything naughty, though. We all know that's just not possible in
Mayberry. That would be just "crude talk" as Gomer would say. And besides, if
Rafe had used a bad word, his face would have become colored like in that movie
"Pleasantville."

Re: Rafe Hollister expletive?

2006-02-08 Thread rcm999
There sure has been a lot of controversy over the seemingly Rafe Hollister
expletive. I hope this will put a new light on it. Growing up, my dad would
sometimes answer a question or make a statement beginning with “Well” and the W
would be soft or silent, like Randy Moffett described. Now, he’d be happy or
excited and combine the "(W)ell" with a bit of a chuckle or laugh (Heh-heh).
Now, put those two together and there you have it. Could THAT be what we’re
all hearing from Rafe?

Rafe Hollister expletive?

2006-02-07 Thread Randy Moffett
In the episode "Rafe Hollister Sings", has anyone besides me ever noticed the
word that Rafe uses when he tells Andy that he is the prisoner that Andy says
was released without getting his new suit of clothes? It sounds awfully close
to "_ell, that's me!" I think I hear an "H", though. Growing up, I used to hear
people begin a sentence with " ell " as in " Ell let's go." They probably used
" ell" instead of "well." But I don't think that's what Rafe said. It's not
offensive but I was wondering why it wasn't censored in 1963.
