2009-03-28 Thread david browning

Hey Friends,

I was watching Mickey Rooney in Tom Sawyer on TCM this morning and heard Tom
and Big Jim discussing Biblical times. Tom was telling how the king decided to
divide the child between two women and give them each half. Big Jim said, "You
know Tom, I ain't never seen no half a boy." Made me think of "Pooor
Haratio".

Another TCM Alumni Sighting

2020-10-15 Thread Joe
I was watching a really good movie Wednesday night on TCM that I've never
seen before: "Abe Lincoln in Illinois", released in 1940. During a meeting
when Abe met with local political leaders to introduce himself, one of
those men, whose face you couldn't see, had a very distinctive and familiar
voice. It was none other than our Mayor Pike (a/k/a Dick Elliott), 20 years
before appearing in TAGS. Another surprise alumni sighting (or at least
hearing).

"Sheriff Taylor" on TCM 12/27

2006-12-20 Thread beastooge
December 27, 9:46PM, Turner Classic Movies will run the short subject ROWAN &
MARTIN AT THE MOVIES (1968). Produced by the U.S. Treasury Dept. to promote
Payroll Savings Plan bonds, it uses a long list of celebrity guests in a series
of blackout gags, similar to the format used by Rowan & Martin on their
television show.

Among the cameos...
 - Andy Griffith appears in his "Sheriff Taylor" uniform
 - Don Knotts appears, in a separate segment, as the 'Nervous Man'

TCM schedules its short subject fillers only one week in advance, and sometimes
are pre-empted at the last minute; so, this is a probable but tentative
programming alert. Also, the start time of 9:46PM might slip by a minute or
two, either way, so if you plan to set a recording timer, plan accordingly.

TCM doc in Dec - RON HOWARD: 50 YEARS IN FILM

2008-08-25 Thread beastooge
Press release from Turner Classic Movies...

Oscar-Winning Filmmaker Ron Howard to Relive His Extraordinary Career in New
TCM Original Special RON HOWARD: 50 YEARS IN FILM

Intimate, Career-Tracing Conversation to Follow in the Footsteps of Past TCM
Specials on Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg

Film Critic and Documentarian Richard Schickel Producing Special for Debut in
December 2008

Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg have more in common than
winning Academy Awards® for their work. These directors sat down for in-depth
interviews with film critic and documentarian Richard Schickel for three
critically acclaimed Turner Classic Movies (TCM) specials. This December,
Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard will join that elite list in a new TCM
original special called RON HOWARD: 50 YEARS IN FILM.

The 90-minute special will trace the actor/director’s career from a
first-person perspective. Howard will discuss each movie he has made, from
1977’s low-budget GRAND THEFT AUTO to major blockbusters like SPLASH,
BACKDRAFT, APOLLO 13, THE DAVINCI CODE, PARENTHOOD, EDTV and the film that
earned him an Oscar, A BEAUTIFUL MIND. He also will talk about his latest film,
the eagerly anticipated FROST/NIXON, in which Frank Langella will reprise his
Tony-winning performance as President Richard M. Nixon and Michael Sheen will
play famed interviewer David Frost.

Howard will talk extensively about his career as a child star in such movies as
THE MUSIC MAN and THE COURTHSHIP OF EDDIE'S FATHER and the landma
rk television series THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW. Howard, whose fame grew as when he
starred in the movie AMERICAN GRAFFITI and the TV series HAPPY DAYS, will
describe how these experiences influenced him as a filmmaker. The interview
will be peppered with memorable scenes from Howard’s extensive career.

"I can’t think of a more appropriate filmmaker to profile than Ron Howard. He
has proven that high quality and enormous box office success can go
hand-in-hand," said Tom Brown, vice president of TCM original productions.
"We’re also thrilled to be working once again with Richard Schickel on another
insightful retrospective of one of today’s most successful filmmakers."
