The Case of the Triple Alumni Sighting
Just happened to come across a Perry Mason episode this morning while changing channels ("The Case of the Hateful Hero") and in less than 10 minutes, I saw 3 TAGS alumni: Howard Sprague's mother as the CEO of a company; Agent Jenkins, the fake FBI agent in "Crime Free Mayberry", as a crooked company board member; and Mr. Allen, the phony film producer who came to Mayberry as part of the crew to supposedly make a movie about Sheriff Taylor in "TV or Not TV", as the police board chairman. Alumni Sighting - and two questions
Last night, I watched a very good episode of "The Twilight Zone" titled "BacK There", about a man who somehow goes back in time and tries to stop Lincoln's assassination. The Washington D.C. police desk sergeant, with huge mutton-shop sideburns, was none other than Paul Hartman a/k/a Emmett Clark. I've seen this episode before but never picked up on it. Now, a couple questions: first, just finished watching the "Gomer Pyle: USMC" episode "Gomer Goes Home". It dawned on me - at the end, as Gomer was leaving on the bus, he looks out the window and sees Andy, Opie, Aunt Bee and Goober just returning from their camping trip. Why would they pull up to the Court House, where Andy climbed up on the station wagon and started unloading all their luggage and gear there, instead of just going back to their house? Makes no sense. Makes a better ending, I guess. My other question is this: I thought the only actors who were listed in the show credits at the end were people who had speaking parts in the episode - that's why we don't know who played Mr. Schwump, for example. Yet Clint Howard's name is in the credits in the episodes where little Leon makes an appearance, although he never says anything. I'm guessing it's because his big brother and father were on TAGS?? I was watching a 1964 episode of "McHale's Navy" Saturday night, with the plot of having a Russian naval officer visiting the crew of PT-73 to learn about our tactics, etc. Turns out the officer was a woman, to everybody's surprise - and, to my surprise, she was none other than Sue Ane Langdon, a/k/a Nurse Mary, who went out on the nighttime picnic with Andy that Barney, of course, interrupted. Quite a difference between the two roles, especially when she went from a strict by-the-book officer to a vodka-drinking, sarong-wearing buddy of McHale's crew. Another versatile TAGS actress. Alumni Sighting - and the price of lettuce.......
Watching "Dick Van Dyke" last night, the star of the episode was one of my favorite TAGS alumni - Denver Pyle. He played Rob Petrie's Uncle George and was great in a very funny role. The episode was filmed in 1963, the same year that Briscoe Darling made his first TAGS appearance. I thought it was interesting that "Uncle George" was supposed to be much older than the young-looking Rob, and he looked it - but in reality Denver Pyle was only 5 years older than Dick Van Dyke. Another interesting fact from that episode: the guy who played Sally's boyfriend, Herman, was Bill Idelson. If that name seems familiar, it's because he was also a writer who wrote about a dozen TAGS episodes (and the Uncle George episode he appeared in on "Dick Van Dyke"). JOE from G.I. Been enjoying all the Alumni Sightings - unreal how many TAGS cast members, guest stars, etc. appeared on all types of TV shows during the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Got another one to add to the list: watching "M.A.S.H." the other morning, there was "Andy's Rival", Frank Smith, playing a Colonel who wanted to court-martial Hawkeye after a shoving incident in a bar. He played a totally different character than the smooth, smart, guitar-playing, School Board member from Raleigh. Now, a question - does anyone else think that Barbara Griffith, Andy's first wife who appeared in the choir in "The Song Festers", standing in the front row next to Barney, looked a lot like a younger, brunette version of Rose Marie in "The Dick Van Dyke Show"? Another "Twilight Zone" alumni sighting
Watching "Mirror Image" last night, the grumpy ticket clerk at the bus depot looked awfully familiar, so I looked him up, and sure enough, it was Joseph Hamilton, who appeared on TAGS 11 times, in various roles - mostly as one of the older "loafers" hanging around town. Can't believe I've watched that episode many times and it never hit me before. Also saw our TAGS "Founder", Sheldon Leonard, in a corny 1947 comedy on TCM called "The Fabulous Joe". He played the same type of character as he did the previous year in "It's A Wonderful Life" when he played the nasty bartender. Watching "The Hollywood Party" episode the other day reminded me that Ruta Lee ( "Darlene Mason"), who also appeared on TAGS as "that college girl" in "Andy On Trial", was on a 1959 episode of "Bat Masterson" I saw recently. She played the wife of a bad guy - she's good in all her roles. It's always a treat to see TAGS alumni in other shows, but this morning on an episode of "Trackdown", I spotted five. Yeah, five. They were Trevor Bardette (One of the Wallys), Will Wright (Old man Weaver), Parley Baer (Mayor Stoner), William Erwin (George Sapley), and Spec O'Donnell (Councilman in "Mayberry Goes Bankrupt"). I feel like that was an early Christmas bonus sighting. Everyone take care and have a wonderful holiday. Watched a classic "Twilight Zone" episode last night - "The Grave", starring Lee Marvin. One of the main supporting actors was James Best a/k/a Jim Lindsey, the Guitar Player - who was also strumming a guitar in a saloon scene. The episode aired in 1961, the year after James appeared in TAGS - wonder if they decided to give him a guitar after seeing him there? Also, to Harriet, about The Darlings on Hallmark - I checked, and at least one of the family members in the cast had the Darling last name. Curious. Saw Aneta Corsaut(Helen Crump)on TCM last night in The Blob with Steve McQueen. What was interesting was Ben Mankiewicz closing comments after the movie where he said Corsaut was best known as playing Helen Crump, " the prettiest girl in Mayberry. " I don't think so. I was watching a really good movie Wednesday night on TCM that I've never seen before: "Abe Lincoln in Illinois", released in 1940. During a meeting when Abe met with local political leaders to introduce himself, one of those men, whose face you couldn't see, had a very distinctive and familiar voice. In the movie "Niagara" mentioned by Joe from G.I., he missed a sighting. Lurene Tuttle who played Annabelle Silby and the lady shop-lifter, the one who shouldn't clank, was near the opening of the movie. She and her husband are staying at the motel, because he won the trip from work. I've mentioned this movie before and about the sightings several years ago. I've been watching The Waltons again after not seeing them for years. A lot of alumni sightings on that show. This alumni was in every episode of TAGS and never flubbed its lines. It is the fallen down tree that Andy and Opie pass on the way to fish at the beginning of each show. While watching The Waltons episode called "The Collision". John-boy is sitting on the tree and then he uses it as protection from a girl and her horse who are jumping the tree. I spotted Ellen Corby aka Myrt 'Hubcaps' Lesh in the movie 'I Remember Mama' from 1948. She played Aunt Trina. I didn't get to watch the whole movie. But I will the next time it comes on. Suzanne Cupito aka Morgan Brittany played on TAGS, Opie's First Love as Mary Alice Carter. I spotted her on My Three Sons as Jeannie Hill in the episode called Daughter for A Day. She was around 8 years old at the time. Even though it was a B/W episode you could tell she had very blue eyes. She played three different characters on My Three Sons. Have a Mayberry kind of day. A surprise double-alumni sighting
Well, last night on TCM I finally watched the classic movie "Niagara". It was shot in and around my hometown when I was a toddler, and was the movie that launched Marilyn Monroe into super star status, but I've never actually seen it. I was pleasantly surprised to see 2 TAGS alumni in it: one of the main characters was played by Max Showalter, who used to go by his stage name of Casey Adams when he played the guy Andy sold the old cannon to in "The Horse Trader" in Season 1. Then, toward the end of the movie, there was Will Wright a/k/a the original Ben Weaver, playing a guy who had a small marina near the Falls. Ever though he was 7 or 8 years younger than he was in TAGS, he looked about the same. Always nice to find TAGS alumni everywhere.
