Ben Weaver and big business
How did Ben Weaver lower his prices than good ole Burts prices ? All he had was a homemade stand. No overhead like Weavers Dept Store ? I know momentary suspension of disbelief' just enjoy the show,. But then I remember Ben Weaver ( on the Christmas episode ) asked Andy something ( at the doorway ), that may give you a clue about Ben making money in another way. Maybe Ben Weavers Dept store was just a big facade ? Holland Lexington NC Less than one hour from Mayberry. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Military and Sheriff Business
Hello All As about graduation and world war 11. It is possible that Andy left high school to serve in the war. Barney served as a clerk in new jersey or new york. Both being about the same age could have taken time out for war then returned to achool when they got back. My uncle left school and returned for his senior year. Many did this. And if andy took over for paley, he was probably a deputy at the time and finished the term. He would have been still in his early 20s, since he was 35 in about 1963. All very interesting. If opie was 6 in 1960, then he was born on the show about 1954. And if andy went to war in 44, at 15 or so, he was just too young. so, maybe just maybe, then meant korea, and just misspoke. Quiet Sam was probably a korea vet. Andy at one oint said he had been to france too during the war. All of this is curious just curious. I have had the bucket on my head ondering this so much i got a headache. Aunt Bee in business
I'm reviewing an environmental document for work and there is a reference to "Aunt Bee's Cleaners and Laundry" within the project area here in Nashville. It is no longer in business, but I did a quick search online and see there is an Aunt Bee's Laundrette in Louisville KY. - supporting Mayberry business -
True, my laundered clothes often come back tinted blue from somebody's forgotten pen, and that my suits I pick up are flecked here and there with cigarette ash ... but Fred Goss is my dry cleaner and as sure as gasoline is 30 cents a ding, I support all business in Mayberry. And yes, I have long stopped asking Goss to give back my picture of Myrna Loy. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

It may have been mentioned, but the Mayberry Diner. Also the newspaper, I don't remember its name. Was it The Mayberry Gazette? There is also the second hand store across the street from the jail. Business Names
Dewey, You did leave off Monroe's Funeral Parlor and TV Repair. That was a thriving business in the early days of TAGS. Also, there was the Snappy Lunch famous for Pork Chop samiches. There was the Mayberry Security Bank, Crowley's Market and I'm sure Elinora Poultice must have paid a business license fee for her voice lessons. I almost forgot the Mayberry Hotel and I have forgotten the name of the jewelry store that Neil Bentley broke into. Can't remember the proper name but it might have been Mrs. Luken's Lingeree Shop where Andy got Aunt Bee bed jacket. Not so sure about this one, but wasn't the butcher shop where Aunt Bee bought all of the tough beef named Diamond Jim's, they wore sleeve garters and had sawdust on the floor. I'm sure you'll hear of many more, those are the one's that come to me on short notice, I was late looking at Sunday's Digest. Mayberry did have a thriving business community. Re: Goober's business
Ken, where I live a lot of school buses and town trucks have their own pumps at their own county or municipal garages. (Wondering why there weren't pumps at the Mayberry Courthouse? Now it would be less likely due to environmental and safety concerns but back then it was surprisingly common if a sheriff's office was based there.) Now the farmers are a different story, they had to find gas for their tractors somewhere. Larger farms probably had their own pumps but smaller farmers? Another thing to consider: much of Mayberry was clustered around the town square and the weather in Mayberry seemed to stay mild year round, almost as if it were California. ;-) So a lot of people probably simply walked wherever they needed to go. She's back in business!
I was driving to a business appointment on Friday and turned a curve and came face to face with a big handwritten sign that said Lesh's Motors. I laughed so hard I nearly ran off the road! Guess I better call the courthouse - of course it was way out in the country, so I could chance that the Morrison sisters might find it and report to Andy. Of course, they may not know about Mrs. Lesh - although she does strike me as the type that might buy some recipe to celebrate National Sawdust Week.
