didn't even change the subject.
  Validate your html...

  CSS validates.
I have to agree with Drew, it doesn't belong in a table.
However, I understand the transition isn't easy to make right
off the bat...
  Nice looking site, btw.
I don't see where you've applied a color to .faqtext at all.
This rule seems to work fine:
.faqtext{color:green;}
I think the problem you're running into is complicated by
the html you are styling. Valid, semantic html plays much more
nicely with CSS.
Take a stab at the suggestions that have been made and get

Well, it's off to have a tooth extracted, so... hopefully
I'll be communicating through a medicated haze later this
afternoon :)

Works well in all the browsers I tested with IE 6, Opera 7.21, Mozilla, NN
4.x. Note that in NN 4.x resizing is slow but does eventually happen. If you
have many NN 4.x visitor, especially those with earlier versions you might
want to put in the Netscape resize fix.

While I like simple, it might be just a bit too simple. A bit more color
might make it feel a bit less plain Jane.

It wraps for me on IE 6 if the screen size goes below 986px but there is
quite a bit of white space off to the right. If you want a screen shot let
me know and I'll send you one.

BTW, while small I can read all the text at 1400x1050. The text under the
logo is the hardest to read and you might consider bumping it up a bit if
you can do so easily but I don't find it critical if you put a title
attribute on it (and it should have an alt tag for accessibility since I'm
assuming you are using the logo for content-aka company name, not just as a
meaningless graphic).

Sheesh, buttons are sooo year 2000. ;)
However, I was also thinking that the navigation gets lost. IMO I think it's
due to the customer testimonials. They seem to generate a chasm between the
site content and the navigation. I would move the testimonials to the far
right column so they perform a supportive function to the main content
rather than being obstructive. Otherwise, I love the simplicity and airiness
of the design. Good work Matt.

No, it isn't necessary not even for xhtml strict as long as you have the
character info in a meta tag as Drew says. It is only necessary if it is
true xml.

Here's a list of browsers that have problems with the xml prolog

Removing the prolog won't invalidate xhtml. Your page will likely be
served as text/html and not application/xhtml+xml. So arguably it will
actually improve the page.

The overflow goes on the container not the img tag. Not in the office so I
can't give you the url to look at but its hebig's url. Someone else here
may have it. Otherwise I can provide and example tomorrow or much later
today.

[wdvltalk] Re: Site check please [http://suhamontaza-albreht.si/]

2004-01-08 Thread Amanda Birmingham
Hi,
Just took a quick look (on IE6, win2k, T1): I like what you've done with
the images fading in and out, and the font is also a nice change from the
usual. Load times were fine. The front page seems a little bare to me,
though--I'd be in favor of more content, even if it meant making the photos
smaller. Also, for me, the Predstavitev izdelkov menu item wraps around,
breaking the alignment of the menu.

Are those different screen-resolution links just for testing, or do you
intend to include them on the final page? If the latter, I would strongly
suggest you don't--I would never use them, and I doubt many other users
would either ... I think that generally, people want a site to adjust to
them, not the other way around. Furthermore, whatever algorithm you are
using to decide on the size of the new window to open (when picking a new
resolution) is not the greatest ... it seems to be making the *display
area* of the new window 1024x768 (for example), which means that the window
itself (including chrome) actually is larger than my screen and very hard
to manipulate.

A few last thoughts: I get no content on the Aktualno page ... is that
right? The rest of the pages have a *lot* of content on them (mostly
text), which means long pages with lots of scrolling. You might consider
possibly breaking the content up into more than one page and letting users
page through them (with a next link or something) ... others may
disagree, but my eyes tend to go glassy when I'm faced with that much
screen text all in one place.

Good luck!

weight to any such survey ... I couldn't quickly find a description of how
thecounter.com gathers their stats, but such sites often use either their
own access records or combine the access records of a few other
sites. Thus, you're seeing how many users *of that site* have javascript
enabled--useful if you believe that your site will have a similar
demographic, but that isn't guaranteed. If you know (for example) that
your site will be used by visually impaired users, then you'd better go
find a survey of javascript enablement for *that* demographic.

This issue has been rather on my mind of late, because I design web
applications used primarily by university-based biologists. We made some
design decisions based on general browser stats (most users have IE, most
have a relatively recent javascript version enabled, etc)--then it turned
out that university labs have a radically different base of installed
operating systems (and thus browsers) than does the general public. Linux
and Mac actually seem to dominate ... so back to the drawing board on some
of those decisions. Brings home how essential it is to know *your* users.

[wdvltalk] Re: javascript survey (was Site Check Please [Rudy])

2004-01-08 Thread Cheryl D. Wise
The counter gets its stats from website that are using the free counter they
offer. Generally the stats will be skewed towards hobby sites since they are
generally on free hosting or hosting provided as part of their ISP package
and don't have access to real statistics.

As you pointed out if you get a lot of academics you will see a much higher
rate of Linux/Mac users than you will in the general population. I had a
site that as recently as April 2003 received over 40% of its hits from NN
4.x users because it was a site related to a class I teach for a local users
group. Their computer lab (and every other computer on the premises) had NN
4.67 as the default web browser. Since many of the members have the user
group as their ISP when they would call for tech support it would be
strongly recommended that they use NN 4.x.

I kept trying to convince them that if they didn't want IE they should use
Mozilla or NN 7 but those weren't stable enough for the admins, gh.
Now they have standardized on IE 6 with XP Pro after the latest round of
updates but I've still over heard tech support saying that NN 4.x was still
the best. I'd bang my head in frustration if I didn't already have a
headache.

Interestingly, while both examples above have width and size specs, my MSIE 6 browser

The dynamic drive script, it's not MSIE changing the specs, but the operating system

I'm doing this with Perl. I followed this article
  http://www.webreference.com/perl/tutorial/8/
and then modified the script
  http://www.webreference.com/perl/tutorial/8/rss2html.pl
My only changes were to hard code the URL to be fetched and then change
the HTML generated. The HTML could easily be placed in a template.

I run my script once a day via cron. The script writes a fragment of
HMTL that is included in the final page by PHP
  http://www.shefen.com/
I get an email if it can't fetch the requested RSS file.

I don't have any simple examples in PHP. The only time I've worked with
newsfeeds in PHP has been part of larger portal-type applications, where
the specifics about the newsfeeds are stored in a data table, for
example the title, URL and how often to update the local copy.

- Check your CSS syntax against multiple browsers
- Upgrade outdated HTML - including font tags - to CSS
- Convert your HTML to XHTML with TopStyle's HTML Tidy integration
- Find out CSS class usage throughout your site
- Side-by-side Internet Explorer and Netscape Gecko preview
- Integration with W3C HTML Validator
- Integration with Bobby Accessibility Checker

Thanks Amanda Gerrie. I like the fade thingie a lot also! It's for IE only
but just changes images in other browsers with DHTML support. I found the
filters at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/samples/author/dhtml/DXTidemo/DXTidemo.htm

Aktualno page will be added a warning that there are currently no special
offers :D

I will brake the long page with anchors so one can quickly navigate to the
desired content and include links on top and bottom and inbetween. That will
suffice I hope. I will also try to subdivide the gallery but I will leave
the -Predstavitev- page intact as the client likes it.

First page really looks bare. Client suggested adding links to main material
manufacturers like KNAUF WEDI on bottom or reducing the image and adding
graphical links on right. I think that may look fullier also.

Resolution links were for testing As I had no idea how things look on non
1280*1024 monitors

Hi,
Just took a quick look (on IE6, win2k, T1): I like what you've done with
the images fading in and out, and the font is also a nice change from the

Good luck!

[wdvltalk] ASP on Linux

2004-01-08 Thread Cheryl D. Wise
I seem to recall earlier today (yesterday?) someone talking about asp not
being available if you were running on Linux. I had a question come up on
that subject from one of my students so I had a quick look around because I
remembered there was at least one alternative to ChiliSoft (now SunASP) to
run asp apps on Linux servers.

I couldn't find the one I remembered but did come across Apache:ASP and
thought I'd pass it along since according to one of the posts I read it will
install as an Apache module on either Windows or Linux system.

2004-01-08 Thread Jure Spik
Haven't seen the 9:30 version but 19:32 one looks very professional and
allround cool. I'd move the content and comments on the right edge down
about 50 px or maybe even center it vertically, but that's a very personal
oppinion ;)

BTW, John Peel - Board Member - is he into music by any chance ?

 All,

please excuse the title, it's been a long day.

please can you check http://www.interactwiththe.net/ict/ and let me know
what you think? The only link that works is services and that leads
 to the same text... :)

AFAIK, it validates as xhtml and CSS2, and I think it looks better than
it did at 9:30 this morning...

 All comments...

 TIA,

 Matt
