[wdvltalk] Re: OT: language (was Viruses)

2004-09-08 Thread Scott Glasgow
Been an interesting read-up on this topic I must say, and it would be
interesting to see how this translates into American too.

Who do you think you've been talking to? ;-)

(Scots-German American, thank you.)

Subject: [wdvltalk] OT: language (was Viruses)

It's amazing when something you take for granted for so long suddenly
turns
out to be wrong. For years I've always been taught that the plurals of
virus, octopus, syllabus, duck-billed platipus and words ending in the
same
way was always the i version.

But it seems that common usage and popularity come into play more than
Latin, Greek or Latinized Greek origins do (such as hippopotami is
correct
but because it sounds so pedantic common usage has forced the plural to
 become hippopotamuses).

Now I was aware that in the realms of the internet, viruses was the
accepted plural, but I always believe that to be the product of an amount
of
dumbing-down of language to prevent Joe Soap from getting confused, but
perhaps it's more to do with the use of viri seems grammatically
elitist,
so common usage has become viruses.

Been an interesting read-up on this topic I must say, and it would be
interesting to see how this translates into American too.

[wdvltalk] Running ASP.NET pages

2004-09-08 Thread Hoenig, Robert
I'm trying to run asp.net pages from my local computer. I have IIS
installed with the .net framework. I have Windows XP Pro SP1. I don't get
an error when I run the page but nothing is displayed. I'm trying to
display a text box and a button. When I copy this page to a 2003 server
configured for .net it works. I have the web.config in the root of my
localhost web site. Is there something else I have to configure to get this
to work?

[wdvltalk] Re: Running ASP.NET pages

2004-09-08 Thread jdmajor
Hi Robert,
I know you have to do more, but not exactly which one at this time.
1. You set up your IIS to run in Win xp Pro.
2. You have the .net framework installed.
3. Are you supposed to install some type of asp.net in the wwwroot
directory?
4. Did you set up a virtual directory (so localhost will work) in the
IIS Directory?

I have all of my internet files in one directory on C drive. I made that
directory my virtual directory in the IIS Default Web Site area, then
I'm able to access http://localhost/... and all pages asp or
otherwise work just fine.

Sure wish I had more information to give you.
