RE:[wdvltalk] is this site good?

2005-02-01 Thread Steven Streight
Joseph:

What did you like about it?

I looked at it for 30 seconds and wanted to leave.

The colors pink and odd gray blue look like, in fact
the whole design looks like they sell baby clothes,
baby stuff.

An amateurish and immature, teenager's personal page
feel. Maybe that works for them.

The large cental photo of the cosmetics: this is a
classic blooper, you should never show photos of the
product.

You should show photos of (1.) the product in use (2.)
by a typical customer (3.) solving a problem or
gaining a benefit with the use of the product.

Sorry. don't mean to berate your judgment, I just
don't like this site from an instant "blinked"
intuitive reaction to the home page.

If I spent more time operating it, I might see good
aspects, but the immediate visual impression of a site
is of utmost importance.

[wdvltalk] Is this site good?

2005-02-01 Thread Joseph Harris
I would not want to copy it, but I was impressed by some aspects of
www.barrym.com (don't ask why I visited it) and particularly by the floating
shopping basket.

Would you agree this is good design?

Just based on the thorough trouncing of the English language, I'd feel
hesitant about it. It's difficult to have a good working relationship

give you a chance to feel out the situation first hand. Never forget
that interviews give you the oppurtunity to check *them* out as

RE: [wdvltalk] OT: MS Office

2005-02-01 Thread Cheryl D Wise
Assuming your are running XP Pro, in My Computer under Tools go to folder
options from the View tab scroll down to the very last option and remove the
checkmark from "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)", apply and then at
the top apply to all folders.

Next go to the level above the folder holding all those docs. Right click
under properties, remove the mark in the read only box and apply. You should
get a message that this will change the settings on all files. Okay and you
should be able to work on the files.

Note that if you do not turn off simple file sharing sometimes Windows will
see the file as locked when it shouldn't be. Right pain in the ... , it is.
Caused me no end of problems with an Access database once.

I've happily got my new supercharged PC up and running - thanks to those
that have provided advice if I haven't said it already. However, I have a
problem with MS Office.

I have moved all my Word Documents from the old HD to the new one but every
time I open one and change anything then try to save, it says the files is
marked Read Only and I have to save under a new name. I've searched the Help
files on the PC but cannot find anywhere on how to remove Read Only - plenty
of advice on how to make a file RO! Even tried some of the MS online groups
without success.

When I've had this problem, I've had to use the old command line to fix it.
The attribute has to first be set to read only (+r), even though it is
already read only, and then removed (-r). I've never done it for a directory
but I would think you could apply it recursively.

You'd want something like (assuming an xp system):
attrib +r C:/big directory/subdirectory /s

And then

attrib -r C:/big directory/subdirectory /s

Have a look at:

http://www.computerhope.com/attribhl.htm

So you shouldn't have to do it one file at a time.

groups without success.

This is a real problem as the files I'm changing are Policies and
Procedures and guidance I issue to clients in connection with Health and
Safety Legislation. They can tell the latest one when I issue them as the
"last updated" date is in the footer and automatically updates when I
change anything. I then simply copy the whole lot to a CD and send them out
- or email them if that is what they prefer.

This problem means I have to save under a different name, go in and delete
the old one, then rename the re-named file to the original name - as I have
over 300 of these that will need changing at some point it's a right P-I-T-A!!

Can anyone tell me how to remove the RO feature from this entire folder -
and many others I also have that seem to have suffered the same fate? I
haven't even looked at my Excel and PowerPoint Files yet - they may be the
same!

Relying on the help of you clever folk as always!! Thanks in advance for
any tips.

RE:[wdvltalk] other discussion lists

2005-02-01 Thread Steven Streight
I'm looking for discussion lists, great quality like
wdvltalk, but on topics like:

* PC security
* blogs
* business blogging
* wikis and wiki development
* web site usability
* wiki usability

etc.

I have Googled "discussion lists" and "blog discussion
lists", I have searched Google Groups, to no avail.
Lots of garbage SE hits.

Why is it so hard to locate these lists, which I'm
sure must exist?
