RE: [wdvltalk] OT mouse arm
Gerrie, I have some wrist guards I wear at home & work when my wrists really bother me. They aren't a prescription, & I think you may be able to get them at an office supply store like Staples or Office Max. I found if I wear them at night when I sleep it really helps. (Not very attractive, but it helps. It's kind of weird the first night or so getting used to it, but I think the benefits outweigh the initial awkwardness.) Make sure your work space is ergonomically correct, ie monitor proper height, keyboard positioned so your elbows are 90° (I also have my trackball mouse down at the 90° position.) You may want to think about a trackball instead of a traditional mouse as it helps alleviate strain. I know Logitech makes some nice ones. Also, take your hands & arms & stretch them every so often. Kind of hard to explain, but take them from your normal sitting position where you're kind of tightened up, and fling them out several times, especially your fingers. A little non-traditional, but I also go to the Chiropractor about every 5 weeks. He adjusts my back, neck & wrists & it really seems to help. RE: [wdvltalk] pre-sold ecommerce customers
Ok, the Mom in me is stepping in to referee... You are both right, so stop bickering! Some people go to the web to do research on products, and sometimes they are going directly to purchase. You can find both of these opinions available on the web, it just depends on who is writing the article and what point they are trying to make. The web is a fairly new medium, and people in general are still trying to figure out how it "fits" into their shopping experience. Can we please just end this here? RE: RE:[wdvltalk] is this site good?
Joseph, Yes, there are always different viewpoints about content & presentation. That's why "listening" in on discussions lists and other people's thoughts are always interesting. Personally, I think an e-commerce site works well if it has the important information on the top of the page. Is the shopping cart information important? Well, that all depends. To some it is, to others, maybe not. No problem about making me reveal my age. I still get carded occasionally, and from far away get mistaken as a kid, so I'm still ok with the slightly under 40 thing! ;-) Ann -Original Message- From: Joseph Harris [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2005 5:16 PM To: wdvltalk@lists.wdvl.com Subject: Re: RE:[wdvltalk] is this site good? RE: RE:[wdvltalk] is this site good?
Hi. Just putting my 2¢ in as a woman! Personally, I also find the site colors somewhat garish and the background color kind of hurts my eyes, but then again, I'm slightly under 40, and might not be their target audience. I'm not fond of the design, but I must say it's unique. I know you like the floating shopping cart on the right, but I think placing the cart in another spot would allow more of that valuable screen real estate to be used more effectively. Plus, if JavaScript is turned off, the cart stays at the top of the column. With all that, if I liked their cosmetics, I would still purchase off the site and just ignore the parts of the site like the color that I didn't like, however, I might not surf it as long. Steven, Thanks for the response. I think if you viewed it as a teenage girl or woman who still liked to experiment with make-up it would be a perfect example of rudy's assertion that content is the key. Like you I find it garish, but don't agree that there is only an action way of presenting a product. My thoughts were that the site works easily and the floating shopping basket kept important information for a visitor less than a click away. The site is also fast (56k), despite so much graphic content. Everything is easy to find and get to. And for the intended audience attractive. It seems to me a site that both showed well and was likely to convert interest to sales. RE: [wdvltalk] (Possible OT) To Robots or not, that is the question...
IMHO, there is no harm in having a robot file. It's just a guide for the robots to follow. Spiders don't need to follow it, but the main 'bots do. I see it as more of a "you don't need to spider this directory" file. At the very least, you can add a blank file to your root to allow all & it won't show up in your error log any more. Google has googlebot. Here is an excellent reference that answers a lot of questions: http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/robots.html Hope that helps, Ann -Original Message- From: Todd Richards [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2004 10:25 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [wdvltalk] (Possible OT) To Robots or not, that is the question... Well, if it were that easy then of course I would do it. However, I know that with some good comes bad, and I'm curious about the bad. I thought I recalled discussion some time ago being all anti-robot. Also, since you can create a robots.txt file and specify settings for specific crawlers then that might be an option. However the list of all the robots is quite lengthy I didn't see a specific robot called "google".
