[wdvltalk] Re: Newbie: Live Web Feed
The basics for live webcasting are: Connectivity: You should have a connection on site that can handle the bandwidth of the streams you'll be putting out plus overhead. DSL and cable need a lot of overhead, T1 or Dual ISDN need very little. Video and Audio equipment: You're all set here. Encoder(s): You'll need one medium powered, solid PC for every stream (56k, 100k, 300k, etc.). Each one needs a capture card, e.g., Osprey 200, and streaming software, i.e., Windows Media Encoder or Real Producer Plus. Streaming Server: No one should attempt to administer their own Streaming Server unless they are extremely comfortable with Web server Admin. A lot of companies offer this service. Playstream is about average and very up-front about their prices: http://playstream.com/services/live.asp About 98% of people who look into live streaming find it too difficult and too expensive. They usually end up encoded the video after the event and offering it on demand a few days later. [wdvltalk] Re: No show mpg?
As it always is with video links, you should be using a metafile (asx) and make sure that your server's MIME types are set correctly for wmv and asx. This will insure that it plays in all circumstances, assuming that the WM Player is installed. I'm sending this from a unix account; makes it a bit difficult to find all the relevent links. Google playlists asx metafiles and check out the second result for how to create asx files. Google set MIME asx and try the first result for how to set the proper MIME types on various servers. If you're on a unix server you can set the MIME types using .htaccess. [wdvltalk] Re: Video WebCast
You're going to pay for this one way or the other. The easy way is to contract for streaming servers and bandwidth from a company like Playstream (www.playstream.com). The hard way is to put up your own server using the freebie Real Server. I've had inquiries like this from PTA's, Homeowner groups, Churches, etc. As soon as they find out what it costs in equipment and servers they drop the idea. [wdvltalk] Re: Publish video?
You have a few choices to make. The most important is streaming vs. progressive download vs. download. streaming: the video streams in real time from a streaming server (i recommend www.playstream.com). Use Real or Windows Media Progressive Download: Video starts playing during download when the player feels that it can keep up. You can do this with QuickTime, Real or Windows Media but you'll need to sort out MIME types and metafiles for Real or Windows Media. Dawnload: You can just download the file to play on the client machine. This works for the big 3 but works very well using MPEG-1 (playable in any player). Most companies don't bother to embed Real or Windows Media. To get an embed tag for QuickTime go to www.metroencoding.com/viewdemos.html and view source on any of the QuickTime demos. [wdvltalk] Re: Streaming video
Microsoft has all but won the race. Best video compression, most players installed. There are a few instances where you might use Real or QuickTime, e.g.: Real has the best audio codecs at low bitrates, QuickTime has the best looking video codec if you don't care about file size or download speeds. 9 times out of 10 it's going to be Windows Media. [wdvltalk] RE: Need help to create Streaming Video on an intranet
Real is your first choice in this case only because you have the video encoded in Real already. You only need to install the player on all of your machines. windows Media should always be the first thought because of the install base, every Windows machine. Whether you use Real, WM, or QuickTime, it is true that there is no great need to install a streaming server. All three formats will do a faststart progressive download through your intranet using metafiles. SMIL is a little extreme though. You can use a .ram file as a link, it's no more than a URL in a text file with a .ram extension. On Wed, 13 Nov 2002, Scott Anderson (PayRight) wrote: The real media format is the easiest to stream, even if you don't have a streaming server installed. You can use a *.smil file for handling the different bit rates that a user might connect at. If you are streaming windows media though, you will have to divy up some cash to get a windows media server and the windows media encoder, because they don't offer a free version like Real Media (don't quote me on this).
