You already know! Flash! :-)

You can put a link to a .avi file and if the user has a Windows PC it might
start up and play in Media Player. Or you can make it into a QuickTime
movie and if the user can bear to instal QT then it'll play. Or hmmm I
think I will just nip out for some popcorn then sit and watch this one as it
should get quite interesting. But I will stick with my first suggestion -
you're already familiar with Flash, which works very widely across different
browsers and platforms, and I would bet money that it can import from a
format he can provide (such as .avi)

Or you could use Macromedia Director MX2004
http://www.macromedia.com/software/director/

If it's a one-off, there's a free trial. Doesn't take much too learn if
you're familiar with Flash. MM has a page for comparison, when to use
either or both:

http://www.macromedia.com/software/director/resources/integration/flash/when_flash.html

Flash is easier to use imho if you don't need to actually edit the
video, max flexibility with Director editing-wise.

cheers,

Guys,
I've googled and am going round in circles :o)

Can someone tell me the easiest way, from experience, of getting a 5-10
second video on a webpage please. Presumably the user will click a play
button on a player or something to play the clip.

Client said he can provide the clips in whatever format I need. If only
I knew! lol

[wdvltalk] Re: Video on website

2004-03-19 Thread jac
Sorry for taking so long to get back on this...

Bj & Mark :o)
I hadn't thought of Flash or Director, but I wouldn't have thought that
they would be the ideal way of approaching things. Something along the
lines of QT was the suggestion I was hoping for but as you said, the
download would be a pain in the ass for the end user.

Dons example is exactly how i thought it should be handled, as this is
the most common way I have seen it dealt with in the past but I didn't
know how to go about it or how to get past the nitty gritty :o)

But thanks for your suggestions & time.

all my best
jac.

my mistake -
yeah you were right Mark, Don had replied directly to me on
[EMAIL PROTECTED] but I have a msg rule set that anything sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] goes into a particular folder. I hadn't noticed he replied
directly.

I don't think he'll mind if I post his response below...

Don wrote:

I did something a couple of years ago for the Broadmoor Hotel when they
were
doing an email promotion. Mostly works in Media Player. Created some
landing pages with three different sizes/speeds for the .avi clips (the
video was provided by another company which serves the files).
I'm surprised this is still up.
http://6cp.com/broadmoor/broadmoor-vidtour-landing.htm This landing
page
leads to a window that streams an .avi file off a media server. The new
window has all the parameters which an .asf file uses to create the link
between the .avi file and the browser. In your OBJECT attributes is
where
you can set what sort of control the user is able to see and access.

Many users can access the right mouse button context menu to control
even a
streaming window with no controls like my example, no matter what you do
in
OBJECT control. Can't remember if they gave me the time to make this
cross-browser and backward compatible. I know the code isn't validated
as
everything was a rush job at CP when I contracted for them.

If you spot some stray electrons with my name on it, it's probably parts of
those messages. ;^)

[wdvltalk] Re: Video on website

2004-03-24 Thread Bankei
The original advice was the best. For videos under a minute us Flash MX
video, compressed in Sorenson Squeeze or Wildform. Embed as you would any
flash.

Over a minute, or so, go to WMV using the free WM Encoder. For source
you'll want uncompressed mov (on Mac) or uncompressed AVI (on PC)
deinterlaced and resized to your target size.
