Stephen, I started as a stark beginner with Molly Holzschlag's book "Using HTML 4, Special Edition" published by Que. I love it and use it to this day. Fantastic book. West Civ has a wonderful set of tutorials on html and css. Currently they are running the free version of intro to css. The basic html is also available.
