[web2py] drop support for python 2.4?

2011-02-04 Thread Massimo Di Pierro
@web2py-developers we have discussing the possibility of dropping
support for Python 2.4. So far we have put a great effor t in having
web2py run on 2.4 because this is the default python version on CentOS
for shared hosts. Yet by dropping support we could improve the code
base, make it more readable and expose new syntax to users.

Who strongly opposes? Make your case.

I´m using CentOS on all my servers but I have nothing against dropping
2.4 support as I have allways installed python 2.5 or 2.6 beside the
default 2.4.

Similar with me as well. Dreamhost comes with 2.4 and 2.5 is what I
installed to work with my existing code.

People this is important, please review your hosting. If the decision is
made, you are not going to upgrade web2py in the future. There are good
reasons on why dropping support of 2.4, in favor of better code and
features.

I think the python 2.4 is too old. Appengine has python 2.5 already. Make
your point like massimo said.

never used python2.4

+1 for dropping support

If shared hosting providers want web2py users, they will enable python
>=2.5.

There are many cheap VPS hosting services with root access.
There is also web2pyslices.com with some easy setup scripts.

If dropping support leads to code improvement and faster/easier development,
than you should drop support. I've never used python2.4. I think it's like
building webpage / application that fits 640x480 display resolution.
