Hmm.. perhaps the word "stable" is problematic in this situation. If
we call the branch with less churn 'stable,' that does imply something
about the stability of other branches that are under more active
development.

That is what I think too. While Stable gets the right message in a
comparison with "Fresh", the second message it sends might indeed be
that if this one's stable the other one is not.

I∕we welcome other terms, by the way. I thought about "mature"

No one puts an older software branch in front of the more recent
branch.

Does MS Office advertise MS Office 2010? :-)

Good point, although I think our situation might be a bit different.
Consider:

* We push updates to the LO 'stable' branch. Does Microsoft push the
same kinds of updates to Office 2010?

Absolutely, yes. They're called Service Packs.

* (I believe) we recommend our 'stable' branch for enterprise
deployment. Does Microsoft recommend Office 2010 for enterprise
deployment?

There's never been a real statement on that, despite what we have
written here and there or rather, it's more a consequence than a true
choice. While MS may not recommend MS Office 2010, they do suggest and
understand (contrary to a lot of people faced with a LibreOffice
migration) that it starts early, with a recent branch, through a pilot
project for upgrade or migration . Just like with MS Office, LibreOffice
gets tested, and in the interim, not only has this branch of LibreOffice
received more recent versions (the x.x.2,3,4,5), it has also become the
older branch. It is how it works.

Now MS may not recommend MS Office 2010, but they certainly, in
practice, encourage enterprise deployments that come with Service Packs
and not the most recent release. Same goes with the ongoing migration to
Windows 7 by the way.

In some ways this might just boil down to the question of: "What's our
use case for the 'stable' branch?"

good point. From a purely analytical perspective - hence this is not a
use case:

- less features, more patches.
Hence: more stability. That's where it becomes tricky, reminding
everyone that:
- Fresh: same patches, more features... hence more bugs. But that's a
fact of life, not an engineering failure.

In this sense it's right for the enterprise. And then yes, that would be
the use case: a more "stable" as in "rock-solid" release. The rest of
the world can use the Fresh version, and not just "early adopters". For
goodness sake, it's an office suite, not a bleeding edge Linux distro
;-)

Best,

Charles.

My proposition:
1/ on the home page, have 2 buttons "Download fresh version" and
"Download stable version". The buttons could be colored differently.
2/ on each download page, have a link "Fresh/Stable version: what does
mean" to a page where the difference is explained. This link should be
in front of the title LibreOffice Fresh / Stable, above "Main installer".

Best regards.

Yes, that's right. We use the browser's user-agent string to make a
guess as to what platform/OS the user might want to get.

Fairly accurate for distinguishing between Linux, Mac and Windows, a
little harder to get x86 vs x86_64 right and even harder to guess
right for rpm vs deb.

With the user-agent parsing, we classify into the following groups:
"win-x86"  => "Windows",
"mac-x86"  => "Mac OS X (Intel)",
"mac-ppc"  => "Mac OS X (PPC)",
"deb-x86"  => "Linux - deb (x86)",
"deb-x86_64"   => "Linux - deb (x86_64)",
"rpm-x86"  => "Linux - rpm (x86)",
"rpm-x86_64"   => "Linux - rpm (x86_64)"

So that's the user-interaction side. On the other hand we have the
site keep a database of the available downloads. For that we parse our
mirror's filelist using rsync and extract the corresponding metadata
from the pathnames. We end up with the following:

'Type' => 'Varchar(20)', /* box, portable, src,
stable, testing */
'Platform' => 'Varchar(10)', /* deb, rpm, win, mac,
multi (box) */
'Arch' => 'Varchar(10)', /* x86, x86_64, ppc, multi (box) */
'Version' => 'Varchar(20)', /* 3.3.0, 3.3.1-rc2,
3.3.0.4 (Sources),...*/
'Size' => 'DBFileSize', /* varchartype not int
because of dvd-isos, larger than int-type */
'Fullpath' => 'Varchar(256)', /* redundant, but as the
scheme differs between type... */
'Filename' => 'Varchar(100)', /* redundant, but as the
scheme differs between type... */
'InstallType' => 'Varchar(20)', /* Full, Helppack,
Languagepack, SDK */
'Lang' => 'Varchar(10)', /* multi/all_lang (win),
en-US,...pt-BR,... */

WIth that it is easy to combine the two.
>From the list of downloads, we determine the versions to offer on the
dl-page (and default to the lastest) - with the version and the
guessed platform you have all you need.
For a user wanting winx86, you query the downloads for matching
Platform, version and bam, you have the matching download.

Now there are additional downloads for platforms, and the set of
available downloads differ per platfrom (helppack and languagepack or
only languagepack). This is taken care of by the html-templating
language along with the php using corresponding conditionals.

The third part of it is the related links section - this is assembled
from other pages stored in the cms by looking at the meta-tags of the
pages. You basically tag pages that show up in the related links
section by applying a meta-keyword to the desired page.

If you're interested in how it actually works, have a look at
https://github.com/tdf/cms-code (mysite/code for the php-stuff, and
mysite/templates for the template stuff) or ask more specific
follow-up questions :-)

There is two things which are not clear for me:

1/ Does the new download page be a template in Silverstripe or a page
from the global (English) website? If it is a page from the global
website, the visitor may be confused by the change of the language in
the upper part of the page.

2/ If a visitor coming from the FR website clicks the download link,
does she get the FR donate page (http://donate.libreoffice.org/fr/)?

http://staging.libreoffice.org/get-involved/donate/dl/portable/4.0.4/12/LibreOfficePortable_4.0.4_MultilingualNormal.paf.exe

Yet, there is another Portable package that some people might want to
choose, if their needed language is not in the "normal" version.

"LibreOfficePortable_4.0.4_MultilingualAll.paf.exe"

So just pick a version that is not in the multi installer and you'll
get the "All" link.

The clicking on "Portable" under the "Package" section - bottom left of
the page - gives you "...Normal.paf.exe".

So would you want to show both Portable package options?

Nah, there I think just showing the matching (chosen or detected)
language is sufficient.
Are you saying if I was detected to use an African language that is
supported by LO, that the link would then select "...All.paf.exe" ???

Also, right now there is only one 4.0.4 ISO file, the NA-DVD one. But, I
would assume that the German one would be available sometime. So if we have
both versions of the DVD for the 4.0.5 installs, would both package links
show up here?

Yes - note that the staging site's download-DB is not up-to-date, so
it might not show all downloads that are currently available - but to
satisfy your example: for 3.6.6 there are both en and german isos, so
try with http://staging.libreoffice.org/download/?version=3.6.6 →
you'll get both offered.

For 4.0.4, there is currently only the NA-DVD on the CD/DVD download
page. I was not even thinking about 3.6.x. Also 4.1.0 comes out at the
end of the month, so I will be planning on making a NA-DVD out of those
installs. 3.6.7 is due out sometime next week. I have to think about
making a NA-DVD for it as well. [but I am using 4.0.4 for all my
system/OSs now].

If you show only one of the Portable package options, the logic would be
that you would only show one of the available DVD .iso file options as well.

Well, yes and no. Portable version is just windows version of
LibreOffice, with a different set of supported languages, whereas the
LibreOffice DVDs are a compilation of LibreOffice + some additional
software and documentation. LibreOffice is multi-lang on both isos.

Thanks for the feedback.

ciao
Christian

I have tired the Portable version once a year or two ago, but there may
have been issues with testing it while I have LO installed on that
Windows system. It looks like there is another group that has created a
different portable system and setup for packages, though I could not get
that system to run on my Win7 laptops. X-LibreOffice, I think it is called.

The Portable package type of setup is a nice one to have so you can run
you favorite package on someone else's Windows computer without needing
to install it on that system. The last time I tried it, it was much
slower than the installed version, but is is a good way to demonstrate
LO to others, if you do not have your laptop [or desktop] handy. Thumb
drives are much easier to carry. I have a few 16 and 32 GB ones I carry
with me, as needed, for slideshows and other presentations so I do not
have to have those presentations/documentation on a specific system that
I must take with me.

The "German" ISO does have other language packs included, but the last
time I downloaded it, the "text" of the DVD was in German. The NA-DVD
uses "generic" English for the "text" of the HTML based DVD, but
includes 8 different languages [language and help packs if available].
The NA-DVD does not include the SKD and source code, but has about 2 GB
of extras, plus the 90+/- install, language pack, and help pack files
for Windows, MacOSX [Intel and PPC], Linux [DEB and RPM], plus the 2
portable packages.

BOTH of the DVDs are targeted on different communities, as far as I can
tell for the "German" one. Note--I produce the NA-DVD.

I would love to see other DVDs listed on the CD/DVD download page[s].
Having a different DVD created for each "major" language would be nice
to see. Those languages would include; English, German, French,
Spanish, Italian, Russia and that region, Middle Eastern region, African
regain, Asian region, etc., plus Hebrew [which MSO seems to forget
about, or so I have been told]. It would be hard to make one DVD, with
the type of extras that the NA-DVD has, with auto detecting language and
several language versions of the HTML based "text" system. I would not
fit on a "normal" 4.7 GB DVD. I looked into it a few years back and
could not figure out how to do it, as well as finding the "extras" in
those languages - i.e. all of the documentation in all of those
languages. [Well that went off topic a little].

I was just thinking about this.

To be really honest, I really like this version of the "default"
download page. It is much easier to use, since there are less
"clicking" needed if you want to download a version that is not the same
as the detected one. I.E., you use Linux to browse the page, but you
want to download a copy of the Windows or MacOSX version[s] as well. I
use Linux for my default desktop, but I have 3 tablets that are Windows
based [WinXP, Win7 Home, Win7 Professional] So for the multi-OS user,
this version of the download page works well. Right now, it was easier
to use the "http://www.libreoffice.org/download-more/"; page for
downloading multi-OS installs over the currently used download page - or
at least until the "staging" one gets to be the "default" page.

I cannot wait till there is an Android OS package listed there as well,
plus maybe an iPad version after that. Android is the only OS I use
that LO is currently not available. I hope the developers get that
version out of the "early-alpha" stage[s] soon.

The plan was to just disable the redirection. Redirecting to a "get
involved" page is trickier, as that then also would need the ability
to show the additional downloads.

What if a localized subsite does not have a donations page (at least for the
Finnish subsite adding one would be legally problematic)? Would it be possible
to make this redirection configurable so that we could redirect to the generic
"get involved" page (which we do have) or should we just disable the

Yes
I like it.
You have less clicks to go through to download a different OS version
than you are browsing with. For those who use several OSs - I use
Windows and 64-bit DEBs - it is much esasier to use this page. Also,
since it also shows the download for the ISO files, it works in that way
as well.

Whichever is the easiest and safest.

I guess you can add then a 4th edit box, after .1 release and keep the
last edit box undisplayed, so it won't disturb the NL teams.

In my case, only when neither .0 nor .1 is applied.

No - that is the basic text-entry for the page - and if nl-teams just
did change the page-type without clearing the content, displaying the
content will add lot of spam to the page...

> Can we have a logic to display the remaining text on releases above .2 ?

It certainly is possible - either in addition (always) or as
alternaive if neither of the .0 or .1 entries are specified.

But before I make that change, I'd like to have the following clarified:

* are NL-Teams prepared? I.e. do you have the "content" entry box
cleared of any previous content / is what you have written there OK
to be added to the DL-Page?

Exactly. Chromium did not mentions ubuntu and returns wrong type:rpm-x86

Very likely there is nothing in the browser's info strings that could
guess the website correctly...

Please visit the downloadpage and have chromium display the sourcecode
(+u)
search for »"typography"« (with the " quotes as to match the div and
not stylesheets), or just scroll down to around line 75

There's a html-comment listing the User-Agent string that is used to
determine the OS, architecture as well as deb/rpm..

If there's something that leads to the conclusion that it is from a
deb-based distro, then the detection can be adjusted. If it is just a
generic one, then the default will be used (and that is rpm)

very likely that mentions ubuntu in the user-agent string, while
chormium doesn't...

Ciao,

By default we're still offering 3.5.x series to users. This is the "most
stable" of our releases. Because of the LibO conference which is
currently going on in Berlin, we've been a bit crunched for time. We're
going to give 3.5.7 a couple days and then we'll put out an announcement
that 3.6.2 is final and then it will be available as an alternative when
you click on the link which reads:

3.6.2 *is* a released version. So there is no need to announce it. I
think you mean 3.6.3.

Change System, Version or Language

Currently it is listed as a pre-release but it will be the same version
that is the stable release when the announcement happens in a few days.

Yes, there are two versions which are announced as pre-released:

3.6.2 and 3.6.3

Have a look at:
http://de.libreoffice.org/download/?type=win-x86&lang=de

That's the point, we shouldn't have 3.6.2 as a pre-release. So we'll be
moving that under stable soon (few days).

Joel

YES we noticed and some one if trying to figure out what happened with
the page system to display both the "stable" version and the "RC"
pre-release version. Then having the warning does not help either. At
one point, for Debian downloads, it showed not just the main archived
file to be downloaded, but all of its parts. That was really confusing,
since it seemed to indicate that you needed to download the parts
instead of the archived file of all of the parts.

There are a lot of automatic coding and file selections going on in the
background. If one small bit of the page gets messed with improper
statements, it could generate the errors that we are seeing right now.

Yes, creation of arbitrary html is not allowed. For Forms, you can use
the "User Defined Form" page type, for more "complicated" stuff, you
need to explain what you need, so that the functionality can be added
to the underlying code (i.e. cannot be done by the UI alone).

Dear all,

There is an error on the new download page. In the LibO, as well as in
the OOo, "sh" locale code is used for Serbian Latin language and should
say "srpski latinicom". It will be the best to place it out of order
just under the "sr" locale code, if possible.

More details about the sh code in OOo:

Just write down the list in order by language code
and compare it with the existing one

understanding of the langcode is not required.

for example,

if you want to get either slovanian or sinhala you can just type 'S' then
list will move to langcodes start with Sinhala
then you can see your language is around there.

this will work for many languages.

I hope you get mine as well (for the user there should be no need to

in my language Unicode is not use in every where its still promoting100%

the best solution is to remove this dropdown list and just show a a table
like in Mozilla or in OO.o
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html

01 detect your systems locale and prompt relevant Libo package
if not let them to select from a table

But the question is: Will people know what the iso-code for their language is?

> as we all know the web site is going to be localized.
> So, in the English content page default package should be English.

The default is whatever the browser's language is, the default is not
tied to the locale of the page.
The browser's UI usually reflect the UI preference of the user,...

> Hope you got my point :)

I hope you get mine as well (for the user there should be no need to
switch to another language hopefully - if detection fails, then please
tell me so). The user definitely knows the name of the language, but
might not know the iso-code.

And for people who want to download more than one language, I suggest
to expand the list below the selection (which then is sorted by
iso-code)

In the end, it is only a small change, I hoped that other people would
post their opinion on this..

please do not take the locale name but localcode (lang-Country)
that is the part not localized

for example;

si-LK is the langcode for Sinhala
if we set the dropdown by order of langcode every one can see there language
as the langcode order and every lancode is redable.

according to my request Arabic, African and Any Lang code start with 'a'
should be in top of the list.

as we all know the web site is going to be localized.
So, in the English content page default package should be English.

Hope you got my point :)

Well - it is in alphabetical order, but taking the native localename

Sorry, don't understand what you mean. Do you mean your browser is set

> but once click on the drop-down it

It does - *E*nglish comes after *D*eutsch, but before *I*rish for example.

The reason not to sort by iso-locale was that someone remarked that
people usually don't know what this is about.

The expandable lists below are sorted by ISO-identifier, thus when you
expand "LibreOffice, the productivity suite", then for example Mac PPC
→ Languagepacks, you'll see the list sorted by iso

If more people think it should be sorted by iso in the dropdown, I'll
change it back to sort by iso - I don't have a strong opinion on it.

Would it be possible for systems that are not fully identifiable, to add
a button 'Determine My Distro', that initiates a system command (like
'uname -a' or something), of course warning the user what will happen
beforehand... ?

If not, why not just ask the user: "We have detected that you are
running [Linux][xBSD][whatever], but cannot determine the Distribution -
please select from the list, or enter it here:"

And/or then present the user with a list of choices, one of them being
'I know what I'm doing, let me pick from the available packages'

I disagree. The vast majority of people in the world are indeed
capable of making a choice when presented with a simple question.

It's one thing to guide a user in making the appropriate and another
to make a choice for them.

> I know, if you ask for Ubuntu a
> lot users if they need to choose deb or rpm, they will not know, cause they

Sure that's why you try to "guide" to the DEB file.

Don't get me wrong though. I actually like the banshee download page.
It's the second step I don't like. The process gives me "instruction"
while I specifically came to the page to "Download" something.

> track.

No. There really are only 3 possibilities. Most popular distros use
RPM or DEB. And others use something specific to that distro in which
case the probably want the source anyway.

If you use a distro that uses deb or rpm you download the file, double
click on it, then the install starts. Simple. And everyone is familiar
with that. because that's how it's done on every major operating
system. Download, double click, install.

And for the those who don't have RPM or DEB. Well don't worry about
them because they know what they are doing. In fact the last thing
they probably want is a piece of Javascript telling them what to do.

As far as architectures go. The OO.o code is not exactly a success
story as far as ports go. I don't think we need to worry about that
just yet.

Language is trivial. I'm almost 100% sure that people know what
language they speak and can select it from a list. And keep it a list
because people often do install their office suite in a diffrent
language. For example I am a French speaking Canadian but I was born
in an bilingual part of Canada. As such I run most software in English
but my office suite in French.

Download method is also trivial. There can only be one.

In any case we have half of use that wants the distro thing and other
want the package thing. So lets compromise and do a bit of both.

See attached image.

SEB.
PS: selecting other would add an extra step to choose between DEB, RPM
and Source.

You have a good point. But I hope some day LibreOffice will be in a lot of
distros, we're aiming to become the default OfficeSuite for the mayor, if
not all, the Linux Distributions out there. Please check the Banshee website
and how the Download section behave:

http://banshee.fm/download/

So, when integrated on those Linux distributions, be expect the user install
them from their package system, (well, we haven't discussed that yet, but
it's what I think).

We need also, analyse the download widget from a user perspective, a list
box with options, if quick for people who know what to do,
it's absolutely not good for normal users. I know, if you ask for Ubuntu a
lot users if they need to choose deb or rpm, they will not know, cause they
use Ubuntu Software Center to install things (and again my first point). And
as Marc Paré stated nor they will know if 32bits or 64bits.

Seb said:

Yes, for now, we hope in the future we have instructions per distros like
the Banshee site. Also we need to jungle with +arch, +lang, +download
method, so it's a little more complex. But I think Samuel is on the right
track.

Well - it is automatically generated, thus it doesn't make sense to
duplicate it in the editor window... In the current form it is just
appended to the content from the editor window

The code that generates the actual list is here:
https://github.com/tdf/cms-code/blob/master/mysite/code/DownloadPage.php

The result is turned into HTML by this:
https://github.com/tdf/cms-themes/blob/master/tdf/templates/Layout/DownloadPage.ss

The javascript that creates the filtered output is here:
https://github.com/tdf/cms-code/blob/master/mysite/javascript/download.js
(but that one is visible from the site as well)

I'm not sure what is the best way to translate it yet. Either by using
hidden paragraphs or divs with the strings and fetch them from there,
or if it is wanted to display strings from different languages from
within the string by calling a different function of the controller
and add it on-the-fly.
Or with the silverstripe way of translating strings (i.e. using the
equivalent of po files in the cms itself
http://api.silverstripe.org/2.4/sapphire/misc/i18n.html#class_details
i.e. using ss.i18n._t('MyEntity.MyNamespace','My default natural
language value');
in the script or just _t(...) in the template.

Sorry, I can´t translate this particular page, because I do not see

Re: [libreoffice-website] Download page

2010-12-08 Thread Seb
It think we are making this much hard than it could be.

They are 3 possible answer DEB, RPM or Neither.

So if you can detect you default to the right package.

If you cannot detect, are not sure you detected right, or you detect
something that does not use deb or rpm. You default to "select your
pacakge".

Also the source package in tar.gz need to be an option. Gentoo and
slackware users for example will probably want that choice.

If you are worried about people that don't know. Put a small link
above the box. "I need help selecting the right package!"
Set the link to display a box on hover.
"If you are using Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint, Xandros, etc.
You should try the .deb package"
"If you are using Red hat, CentOS, Fedora, Suse, OpenSuse, Mandriva
etc. You should try the .deb package"
"If you are using Gentoo, Mandrake or another distribute you may want
to use the source package.

(People usually at least know which distro they have. It's usually
pretty clear because of the big bright logo at boot. :) )

This can be followed by the language selection box.

Then by 2 checkboxes.
-64bit
-torrent

That's the question.

I think we have to know whether there are popular distros out there
not identifying themselves through the browsers of their repositories.

If there are not, people with no distro in the user agent probably
will have installed the browser themselves, so they will probably know
which package they need.

But if there are, then the distro selector becomes significantly useful.

I would never consider showing a selection of distros Debian,
Fedora, Mandriva, Mint, PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, openSUSE rather than a
selection of package types Windows, Mac x86, Mac PPC, Linux x86 rpm,
Linux x86 deb, Linux 64 bit rpm, Linux 64 bit deb.

But, is that necessary? How often will it be, that the distro will
not be detected? And how often will it be, that the distro will not
be detected *and* the user will not know himself what package type
to choose?

A user, who does not know, if she needs rpm oder deb, is such a user
able to install the software herself, anyway?

Then you said:
my solution (and the one from

And I wanted to say:
When not detected,
http://test.libreoffice.org/download-3
simply pre-selects rpm.

Me neither. btw I don't think Carlos meant pop-up when he said "prompt".

Now, what about this:

If system detection successes, the system prompts a listbox with:
- Windows
- Mac x86
- Mac PPC
- Linux x86 rpm
- Linux x86 deb
- Linux 64 bit rpm
- Linux 64 bit deb

And the right listbox is pre-selected.

Else, if Linux is detected but not the distro, the system prompts a
different listbox and a link.

The listbox is:
- Debian
- Fedora
- Mandriva
- Mint
- PCLinuxOS
- Ubuntu
- openSUSE

The link is:
- Show other versions.

"Show other versions" leads to the first listbox, but with no
pre-selected option.

It does the same as the Opera page does: Tries to guess the right
thing, but still offers the user to choose.
Opera page wrongly detects ubuntu deb (I'm on Mandriva and thus rpm),
but lets me choose mandriva with the controls. The same with the
downloadpage.

I surely don't want a popup-style prompt to force the user click a
dialog away or something.

What the page doesn't do yet, is to check for iceweasel explicitly.

Well it does something automatically. When I visit
http://test.libreoffice.org/download-3 with Ubuntu it correctly
preselects

Linux x86 (deb) de

and when I visit it with Windows, it correctly preselects Windows.

However, if I want to download the packages for a different system,
I am free to select what I want.

I am fine.

That solution simply pre-selects rpm; does not prompt the user to
select the distro.

However surely it can be improved to do so.

Iceweasel is debian only anyway. No rpm based distro has a browser
named "iceweasel"

That it isn't taking iceweasel into account yet is a minor flaw in the
script, and then even cuts more share of deb away from the
"undetected" ones.

> [Ubuntu] SeaMonkey

Wow, what a deal. You found corner cases of users not using the
default browser(s) of the distro. There will *always* be exceptions of
the rule

But again those cases are irrelevant when writing "The whole world
uses ubuntu, thus the fallbacks hould be deb".

Those who use ubuntu, use vast majority of those at least use the
default browser in ubuntu which identifies itself as being ubuntu.

The examples you give only state that:
Debian users who use chrome are not detected (but honestly, how many
debian users will use chrome?)
Ubuntu users who use Seamonkey will not be detected. But again: How
big is the share of Seamonkey users of all ubuntu users?

And: Don't you think that people who're not using the browser that is
installed by default, even go to the point in adding extra
repositories to their system are advanced enough to manually select
the package format?

Again: Only the unclear case counts. And if Ubuntu and debian users
can easily be detected (when using default browsers), than those
users, no matter how much, don't come into the equation anymore. As
simple as that.

Hi,
Sorry I just joined and probably missed half this discussion.

Wouldn't it be acceptable to have a page similar to the opera
(http://www.opera.com/browser/download/) download page and when the
page can detect you distro it focuses the drop down to you distro. If
it cannot identify it just focuses the menu to please select you
distribution.

The the second drop down for 32 or 64bit.

cheers,

I see the action is taken server-side because the HTML is served with
the Ubuntu item already selected.

But the issue remains the same. Browsers don't tell servers more than
the user-agent, the accepted languages, some cookies, and several
other things independent from the OS.

If it detects Mandriva I'll crazy go nuts.

For me is detecting Ubuntu but I don't know why. I'd say it guesses.

I think the question is: which among {deb, rpm} is the package format most
frequent among users unable to detect a wrong recommendation AND using
browsers that do not report the distro?

For simplification, I'm assuming deb and rpm package manager availability is
mutually exclusive.

distrowatch is hardly representative.

Ubuntu and debian identify themselves, so what remains?

Just look at the default browser in ubuntu or debian: The user agent
string is modified to contain ubuntu/debian. Thus all that
"statistics" is void, as it is not relevant for the decistion it is
used as argument for.

Even if the distrowatch statistics would reflect the real user
distribution, the biggest hunk of Ubuntu already is out of the
question - and the bias strongs shifts towards rpm.

Put Mint, Ubuntu and Debian and you have the bigger chunk.

You're based on what to say that?

Please don't start a "religious" rpm/deb war.
Clearly, my user agent doesn't state the distro either, and mine isn't
deb-based. :)

I don't mind having the script default to deb, as long as I have the
option to choose a different version to download. :)

I think I am capable enough to decide which package to download for
installation.

Because those that do, are debian based.

Even if overall downloads would be more deb than rpm, then those with
"unknown" system would be rpm in majority, as debian rebrands firefox,
etc, and ubuntu also modifies user-agent string. RPM based distros
usually don't.

A lot of Distros and configuration doesn't show the Distro, so, why RPM? As
Samuel stated, based on statistics, the more common is DEB, so let put the
default the DEB one.

But what about this:

When no distro is detected, let the user choose if RMP, DEB or source
Tarball. Just like the Banshee people does:

Change the default to rpm instead of deb, that should give more
suitable fallback anyway.

OK. There it is. From your user agent we can say you are using linux 32 bit
but not which distro. For this scenario the function "guesses Ubuntu", so it
returns 'deb'.

The decision of guessing Ubuntu is purely statistical. Not religious. ;D

How could we gather more clues about the distro for these scenarios? If only
I knew.

Thanks Sigrid, could you provide the User Agent listed on that page please,
just after "It works based on your user agent string, which in your case
is "

My recommendation was x86/deb so everything is ok, both on Chromium and
Firefox
