arm.fpo website breaks due to bad Danish translation
Hi there, I haven't contributed for years now but still checking several things. The websites are building hourly (please check me Robert and Co if I am wrong) and has been crashing for 73hours now. Due to the Danish incorrect translation. Can someone fix this? msgfmt -c -o po/da.mo po/da.po po/da.po:262: number of format specifications in 'msgid' and 'msgstr' does not match msgfmt: found 1 fatal error The string is there at Zanata https://fedora.zanata.org/webtrans/translate?project=fedora-web=arm.fedoraproject.org=da=fr=6113#view:doc;doc:po/arm.fedoraproject.org;search:Hj%C3%A6lp%20p%C3%A5%20e-post-liste Even Zanata mark this translation as bad but users don't know that it fails our websites rebuild... I dunno how to 0) mark as incorrect under Zanata, 1) get the username who last translated.. I have just used the "reject translation" button but don't know its real meaning... @websites shouldn't we improve our Makefile to: "msgfmt -c " in order to avoid the stacktrace (I might send you a patch :/) continue with default po template for that broken language ? Or open a BZ ticket against that team? Or send an email to the mailing list? It just feel bad to be notified that websites build is broken without telling others... Perhaps not black and white, but we have 4 foundation colors, why not use the different colors to distinguish the sites/tabs/whatever of the three products? not so nice for colorblind people. Or for people having a bad screen color settings. Ok for the title, or a background somewhere, but it should stay discrete imho. On Thu, Jan 23, 2014 at 10:45 AM, Robert Mayr robyd...@fedoraproject.org wrote: Hi all, I know it's rather early, but the WG decisions are going more concrete every week, so we could start to collect ideas of how to make the websites look like and what would be the best solution to keep the pages user-friendly, clear and informative at the same time. Once we have something to work on, we can open a specific trac ticket to start coding. It's also clear we depend on the marketing and design team, this means the earlier we have some ideas the better, because we can speak to them in time. The actual status, and for F21 we shouldn't have any surprises, is about 3 products: * Workstation * Server * Cloud All of them have the same Core and will be released at the same date (for F21). We need also to give all of these products the same importance. Pages affected by this change are mainly: index, get-fedora, get-fedora-all, verify, get-prerelease. If we look at it farther, we should also change the splash pages and the using and features pages (here we need marketing). The work for F21 Alpha (if we definitely use the new release cycle) is limited to the get-prerelease and verify page. There should be also a few adjustments on the index, IMHO. But the work on the get-prerelease page surely will give us the direction on how to present the three products, so it's rather important because it will be reflected afterwards in the get-fedora page (for final release). Personally I'd see a three column layout for the three products, this should work as entry page and once the user select the product he is interested in, he will be redirected to the specific page where he'll find also the download button. This can be a tab within the same page or a new page, I'd prefer a tab as it's much faster. I have already some doubts we need to figure out asap: What's with spins? Will we still have separated images? It seems not, but I may be totally wrong here...for all these doubts we need to have as many informations as possible from the WG, and FESCo filed an activity report to keep track of the decisions [1]. If you have any ideas or addtions to this please add them, this topic should work as brainstorming and news-collector, in order to not forget anything important when rewriting the pages. [1] https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/1221 Thanks for the initiative Robert. Reading fast, answering faster: - Do we know yet that the Base won't be shipped as a product? I would see dev downloading base in order to install their own Fedora very specific (is ISO is made). - In the download area, I would see 3 column or one block and 2 column bellow. With the first (block or middle column) featuring the default download (which would stay Workstation, right?). With main info (dl{,direct, torrent, live} links). The other column would just be the explanation about the product (a name, a text, a picture). One would click on the column to hide the previous shown and display specific content. Then we would just have index (get fedora default) and get-fedora. There is no need anymore about get-fedora-all. That way, we strip out many entries to show smart and precise content. Also, we should matter about accessibility. And Javascript should be only about improving the general shape/beauty of our design. -- Kévin Raymond (shaiton) GPG-Key: A5BCB3A2 -- websites mailing list websites@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/websites

I removed the h5, added br. Therefore, the blank line is removed. I feel the text is too small now though the vspacing is a bit better. I don't think so. I just re-use the css from the h5 style. This is exactly the same size. I can make it bigger though. Please, check the comparative screenshot: http://imagebin.org/255308 It comes probably from your own zoom on the browser. Instead I would suggest to restore h5 since it looked better and place br after each /li in the Planet Fedora entries. Please let us know if you need to have the ISO architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) on the translated string and not as a variable. I'm speaking fluently German and Italian and also know English, so I could contribute also on the open project of translation, which is ongoing. My other skills are html, php, mysql, css3. I'm living near Milan since 2010, before I spent most time of my life in Bolzano (South Tyrol). I have 2 daughters and the third child (a son this time!) is coming within the next 3 weeks. It would be nice to contribute to the website team by maintaining the major site, but also the various interesting sub-projects. Cheers Robert Mayr (robyduck) Hi Robert, Nice to see you here. I would be pleased to help you joining our group (same for other incomers, uh)! Since you know php, I think you'll soon get python skills. Indeed our websites are built using HTML/CSS and the Genshi python framework for internationalization. The websites design was done using 960 grid system[1], so you'll see many divs in our sources. To get started, you need: - to clone our repo. See [2]; - join the web FAS group (this won't give you commit access but you'll get commit messages). The gitfedora-web group is the one giving git push access, and it depends of the web one. We will see later to give you this access when you will get more comprehension about our architecture. I would prefer to speak through irc (freenode, #fedora-websites) by that time. - Start working on tickets, see easyfix[3] or our Trac[4], and send your patches here. Please ask if you have any queries, here or on the websites irc channel. @Sijis, I don't think we currently have a better start page than[2], I will add the infra part, for people to know how the build/staging process works. I realise this may mess up translations. In this case the older translations could be used until updated. Will I update the po files so in the same patch and mark that translation as fuzzy to incite updates in future, though I suppose I'd have to do that at transifex? +1 for your patch. Yes it is going to break translations if we just apply it like that. Few thoughts: - We don't update POs anymore as it is done through transifex.net now - We only upload POTs and pull POs. - When many changes have to be made, we could use a staging instance in order to provide a new POT and let some times for the translators to localize, and proofread online. Then, a merge is fine. This is clearly the best solution, but some translators won't understand clearly what they are translating (many resources on transifex.net). That is what we do by the alpha/beta time. - We could just apply like that, it's not a big change (but need to notice translators), and we have done worst… If you have any questions, please ask. -- Kévin Raymond (shaiton) GPG-Key: A5BCB3A2 -- websites mailing list websites@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/websites
Re: Re: A clarification about Fedora-it.org
Just a little reply...maybe this thing should be discuss on fedora ambassadors mailing list... It should much great to work with existing and active Italian fedora ambassadors and not with single person that don't collaborate with other people or other teams. Dear Mario, I do not think this is the place to have a discussion with these tones, as shareable, I do not think that others are interested in reading these boring things. +1 Agree, this is not really to the website team to decide. It should be the Italian community, why not through the ambassador mailing list. But this has also been raised to the advisory-board mailing list. We are spreading the discussion (without going really further). I prefer, and I think users prefer too, to see one specific local and official community portal. I believe he was told there was no distinction between official and local? Or am I wrong. No, you're perfectly right. There is no official local community, there exist only strong and unified communities which have become a sort of officiality in the end-user view, but nothing more. What users will prefer them to decide, I do not think you can take arbitrarily the right to say what users prefer, it is not a democratic reasoning. +1 It is far easier to have only one portal, one forum… But if you guys feel the need to have a second one, that's because something is not going right for everyone. I am really disappointed to view this request from Stefano Mainardi and Antonio Trande. They don't really collaborate with existing Italian Fedora community...and with Italian Fedora Ambassadors. I and other Italian Fedora Ambassadors read this request from fedora-website mailing list and not from a discussion in our team. For me personally do not collaborate with the various ambassadors, but I know exactly that different users who attend Fedora-it have been very active in the official community. I've done in the past, but I follow and actively collaborate with other open-source projects, I say this to clarify my position with you, if you need to clear ideas about me. Even a simple Google search might help. I hope fedoraproject collaborator could understand my point of view and my We could understand facts, but we won't understand it as an Italian contributor. We are abroad and only know what is written here. We don't *feel* how goes the community. Giving a GO for a website is a hard question. To prevent misjudging, should we just say yes if the domain name is approved?. I believe that there should be only one local community portal, but some other could serve specific purpose. Like for test, devels, simple users… There are many ways. Of course if it's only a dupplicate… One would grow faster. Furthermore, infrastructure and moderation take lot of time, the time that we loose at contribution. There is no easy answer. [snip] Lets do something for the end-users of Fedora, it's the best thing we can do. Our main goal is not to gather users… But to grab contributors :) (But yeah I got your point). The main problem here is that we don't have contributors willing to help sorting that, but the one directly involved. IMHO it is not only about ambassadors, I know many contributors more actives at spreading Fedora/going to events than real ambassadors. This is a Project wide question involving the whole local community. That's why I believe advisory-board could help (but they are not answering). Could an Italian contributor sum up this thread on the existing one? Please, be fair and explain the facts not what *you* want. I think this could be a problem in the future too, so why not discuss about some guidelines which helps the local communities but also the website team to define clearly the state of a community? I'm thinking about a solution like the Ubuntu communities: obviously, everyone can create a new local community, but only one community rappresent the single State. I remember there are regular tests, which verify the activity of the local community and if the site is just online. If the test fails another local community site has the right to take the place of the precedent one. Sharing resources is more efficient than spreading users I think, so it should be obvious that the goal of the fedoracommunity site is to give the end user a clearly identified local community. +1 I'm open to be an active part in finding new guidelines, if you want. I would add that Legal should not approve trademark license agreement to the unknown if the local community already exist. Example if my neighbor ask to register the greatitalianfedora.it, the request should be rejected if the owner is not involved in the local community. But they need to understand how the local community works. It's not easy, neither fast. Probably she can help you Take care Francesco Hi, Thanks Francesco, I've seen with her… That this is a complete mess! Adding the logistic list now that we need to sort this issue. To summarize the fudcon.fpo websites status: - From the Websites team perspective, we don't know how this website is maintained, it was originally a staging solution waiting for a Drupal instance to be set up (from my last 2 weeks research…) - fudcon.fedoraproject.org is *really* outdated - There is no FUDCon comitee, we don't have anyone to refer if something is done wrong, or if something is missing. - The FUDCon wiki pages have nothing about publishing in fudcon.fedoraproject.org or any other alternatives - The first maintainers of fudcon.fedoraproject.org are the one that wanted to set up the Drupal instance (was insight helping them?), but I can't find its current status, last info was on October 2011, and involved guys are not responding (I think it was shreyankg and tuxdna). To sort this, I am also adding in CC the FUDCon owners of the last and future events, if you guys have been trying to deal with this website (fudcon.fpo) before… If anyone has any input, please tell me about this Drupal thing, otherwise I'll simply forgot about this and setup a working process for fudcon.fedoraproject.org maintained by the websites team, translated by translators, and fully designed in HTML/CSS. There will be no foolish registering things. Who have the admin online account? 4.- Maybe take care and integrate fudcon facebook and twitter resources and make them fill the page when we don't have time. Do you think this might work as a midterm-long solution? Yep, that would be great. 5- See how to integrate that with translators (that would be nice to have it EN and LOCAL languages). In looking at the features list, I see a theme of cloud and virtual system tools/services being included in this release. We could look at these features and break them into 2 groups: 1) technical 2) casual user/front-end I would put Gimp, CUPS color, Font Config, Network Manager and KDE in user group. The cloud/vm stuff is in the technical category. So my thought is maybe we can create 2 slides, 1 targeted for each group. Is that too much or unnecessary? Elad, you want the Games spin.. Is there any news or big update on this spin? I am registered on this mailing list, but it's really low traffic and I haven't seen any news. But we still could feature it. Who doesn't like games?! Re: search engine on start.fpo
DDG depends on Bing search api, right? I've recently read that Bing was going to start charging a fee for using that api. Will that pose a problem down with the road with using DDG or am I mistaken? Sijis Hum, DDG is using several sources I think (I have juste looked for the answer the last 10 minutes, without having the answer…). But the fact is that you can use bang! syntax in order to have google, bing, or other results. If Bing change their api license, I am sure they will adapt. If they don't, we could hard write this !sp bang syntax then to ask DDG to give us results from startpage, or simply revert to Google if people go crazy (But change is evolution). -- Kévin Raymond (shaiton) GPG-Key: A5BCB3A2 -- websites mailing list websites@lists.fedoraproject.org https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/websites

Seems to be a problem with SeaMonkey 2.0.14 and firefox 3.6.24 (highest rpms for Fedora 14), configuration mini fonttype etc in preferences is not the problem. Fedora 16 as guest in VM with Firefox 11 doesn't have the problem.
