arm.fpo website breaks due to bad Danish translation

2018-10-08 Thread Kévin Raymond
Hi there,

I haven't contributed for years now but still checking several things.
The websites are building hourly (please check me Robert and Co if I
am wrong) and has been crashing for 73hours now.

Due to the Danish incorrect translation.
Can someone fix this?

msgfmt -c -o po/da.mo po/da.po
po/da.po:262: number of format specifications in 'msgid' and 'msgstr'
does not match
msgfmt: found 1 fatal error

The string is there at Zanata
https://fedora.zanata.org/webtrans/translate?project=fedora-web=arm.fedoraproject.org=da=fr=6113#view:doc;doc:po/arm.fedoraproject.org;search:Hj%C3%A6lp%20p%C3%A5%20e-post-liste

Even Zanata mark this translation as bad but users don't know that it
fails our websites rebuild...

I dunno how to 0) mark as incorrect under Zanata, 1) get the username
who last translated.. I have just used the "reject translation" button
but don't know its real meaning...

@websites shouldn't we improve our Makefile to: "msgfmt -c " in order
to avoid the stacktrace (I might send you a patch :/) continue with
default po template for that broken language ? Or open a BZ ticket
against that team? Or send an email to the mailing list?
It just feel bad to be notified that websites build is broken without
telling others...

Cheers,

Just have to include a reference to the archive repository and past
contributors credits.

Also, we should think about git annexe or alike in order to move
screenshots outside the repository.
Any idea? (I might have read too fast if you aleady addressed this topic)

 funny part.

Perhaps not black and white, but we have 4 foundation colors, why not
use the different colors to distinguish the sites/tabs/whatever of the
 three products?

not so nice for colorblind people. Or for people having a bad screen
color settings.
Ok for the title, or a background somewhere, but it should stay discrete imho.

 Hi all,
I know it's rather early, but the WG decisions are going more concrete
every week, so we could start to collect ideas of how to make the
websites look like and what would be the best solution to keep the
pages user-friendly, clear and informative at the same time. Once we
have something to work on, we can open a specific trac ticket to start
 coding.
It's also clear we depend on the marketing and design team, this means
the earlier we have some ideas the better, because we can speak to
 them in time.
The actual status, and for F21 we shouldn't have any surprises, is
 about 3 products:
 * Workstation
 * Server
 * Cloud
All of them have the same Core and will be released at the same date
(for F21). We need also to give all of these products the same
 importance.

Pages affected by this change are mainly:
 index, get-fedora, get-fedora-all, verify, get-prerelease.
If we look at it farther, we should also change the splash pages and
the using and features pages (here we need marketing).

The work for F21 Alpha (if we definitely use the new release cycle) is
limited to the get-prerelease and verify page. There should be also a
few adjustments on the index, IMHO.
But the work on the get-prerelease page surely will give us the
direction on how to present the three products, so it's rather
important because it will be reflected afterwards in the get-fedora
 page (for final release).

Personally I'd see a three column layout for the three products, this
should work as entry page and once the user select the product he is
interested in, he will be redirected to the specific page where he'll
find also the download button. This can be a tab within the same page
or a new page, I'd prefer a tab as it's much faster.
I have already some doubts we need to figure out asap:
What's with spins? Will we still have separated images? It seems not,
but I may be totally wrong here...for all these doubts we need to have
as many informations as possible from the WG, and FESCo filed an
activity report to keep track of the decisions [1].

If you have any ideas or addtions to this please add them, this topic
should work as brainstorming and news-collector, in order to not
forget anything important when rewriting the pages.

Thanks for the initiative Robert.
Reading fast, answering faster:

- Do we know yet that the Base won't be shipped as a product? I would
see dev downloading base in order to install their own Fedora very
specific (is ISO is made).
- In the download area, I would see 3 column or one block and 2 column
bellow. With the first (block or middle column) featuring the default
download (which would stay Workstation, right?). With main info
(dl{,direct,torrent,live} links).
The other column would just be the explanation about the product (a
name, a text, a picture). One would click on the column to hide the
previous shown and display specific content. Then we would just have
index (get fedora default) and get-fedora.
There is no need anymore about get-fedora-all.

That way, we strip out many entries to show smart and precise content.

Also, we should matter about accessibility. And Javascript should be
only about improving the general shape/beauty of our design.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your question.
I think it does not really matter as we are using 960 Grid System, the
width of the blocks are set. If you have a narrow web browser it should
add a scroll bar itself.
The blocks all have the minimal width needed to display their content
IMHO.

I removed the h5, added br. Therefore, the blank line is removed.

I feel the text is too small now though the vspacing is a bit better.

I don't think so.
I just re-use the css from the h5 style. This is exactly the same size.
I can make it bigger though.

Please, check the comparative screenshot:
http://imagebin.org/255308

It comes probably from your own zoom on the browser.

Instead I would suggest to restore h5 since it looked better
and place br after each /li in the Planet Fedora entries.
I think that would maintain the old size and
 the vertical spacing issue completely.

Hi Andrei,

Sorry I missed to keep the websites team in CC on my previous email.
It appears that you are clicking on the link at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrading_Fedora_using_yum#Fedora_17_-.3E_Fedora_18

You don't have to, as written you need to run the following command from your
terminal:
su -c 'rpm --import https://fedoraproject.org/static/DE7F38BD.txt'

The error that you get is that mediawiki created the link with the last quote.
The correct url is https://fedoraproject.org/static/DE7F38BD.txt.

Nothing incorrect.
Please tell us if you are still stuck.

fedoraproject website, new ressource

2012-12-29 Thread Kévin Raymond
Dear translators,

Please find on transifex[1] the new fpo ressource. We added the secondary arches
at get-fedora-options.
It will be merge on the f18-beta branch right before the release date. Please
don't translate the f18-beta branch anymore.

I am currently building a better translating process in order to avoid this kind
of ressource creation/lock/merge... And keep the credits rights (I should not
appear as a translator). But it needs some codes to be clear and we are on
freeze. Let's make F19 a wonderful release :D

Please report any issues, and proofread at
http://stg.fedoraproject.org/get-fedora-options#2nd_arches

Spins website translation update for Beta

2012-11-24 Thread Kévin Raymond
Hi translators,

We changed a bit our spins website architecture to be more easily maintainable
(thanks Robyduck!).
We had to do it quickly as we got a BZ report against some wrong ISO size..

As for the main fedora project website, the release is now in the beta branch,
at transifex under the spins-fedoraproject-org-beta ressource. The master one is
locked, it is going to keep the error until the Beta release, which is going to
be next Tuesday.

Only few strings changed.

Please let us know if you need to have the ISO architecture (32-bit or 64-bit)
on the translated string and not as a variable. It could depend on the language,
and we used to do it on the fedoraproject.org website for a year now, without
any bad report. If so, please open a ticket.

Proofreading could be done at spins.stg.fedoraproject.org

Cheers,

  Thoughts?

As seen before this page is used, to get people on the Planet.

The planet is not really interesting for end-users, and contributors already
have them in their RSS readers.

So the real question is:
Do we want this page to be contributor or end user centric? As we try
to keep both with a simple page, it could not work easily.

The next step needs sponsoring in order to give git push access. It could
be fast if you give us interesting patches.
But in all cases one of us needs to assist you, which is a bit time
consuming.
Of course, we would love to have more webmasters. Please be patient as we

Hi there,

I am please to announce that we have set the fedoraproject.org
f18-alpha branch on transifex.com.
Please stop translating on the master one, and push to the f18-alpha branch.
The alpha should be released the 28, there would be minor edits by
that time, please watch this resource.
I still have to update few strings in order to add variables (like the
arch), don't have more time yet, probably tonight.

We are going to set this in staging at stg.fedoraproject.org soon
(today hopefully).

Happy translating/reviewing

Cheers,

I've recently received complaints from users about the insulting and

be appropriate to at least disclaim it to users who click on that link
 from our website.

We should add some sort of notification to be given to a user clicking

Shouldn't we replace this link to point to ask.fpo? Which is FOSS and official?

Yes, IMHO we could publish,
close the ticket and reopen one for

The use of social networks

2012-07-07 Thread Kévin Raymond
Hi there,

I am not involved in other social things than the Fedora Planet and
our mailing lists… So this email is about an idea that I won't resolve
by myself :).

We just had an IRC discussion about the use of our social network on websites.
Couldn't we set up a broadcasting service to publish on our official
Facebook, Google+, identi.ca and Twitter pages?
Like what is sent through the announce mailing list, or to auto-send
announce message about the beta availability, the release day…
Also shooting the release notes link would be great, has people still
come asking Is there anybody know where to get the info about the new
features and capability of fedora 17? (just this morning on -docs).

There could also be something that I am not aware of..

One of the most important events every year is the FUDCon, so it would be

Better working on this and tracking a new ticket for the mid/long term

You're right.

Hi Robert,

Nice to see you here.

I would be pleased to help you joining our group (same for other incomers, uh)!
Since you know php, I think you'll soon get python skills. Indeed our
websites are built using HTML/CSS and the Genshi python framework for
internationalization.
The websites design was done using 960 grid system[1], so you'll see
many divs in our sources.

To get started, you need:
- to clone our repo. See [2];
- join the web FAS group (this won't give you commit access but you'll
get commit messages). The gitfedora-web group is the one giving git
push access, and it depends of the web one. We will see later to give
you this access when you will get more comprehension about our
architecture. I would prefer to speak through irc (freenode,
#fedora-websites) by that time.
- Start working on tickets, see easyfix[3] or our Trac[4], and send
your patches here.

Please ask if you have any queries, here or on the websites irc channel.

@Sijis, I don't think we currently have a better start page than[2], I
will add the infra part, for people to know how the build/staging
process works. (If I don't forget…)

This is great to work with ambassadors in order to grow the community and

Having the seal certification by Fedora is important for us to see us
recognized a little recognition for the work we do every day, and for the

We don't provide any seal, we are an open community where everyone could
contribute.
On the websites part, after few discussion, we are not opposed to add more
links in the community website.
But we are restricted to Red Hat Legals for the use of the Fedora Trademark.
So please, consider asking them the trademark agreement, we would then be
able to link your community portal.

We didn't have a clear procedure to be registered on the community website,
and to be fair with every communities, there is going to be a clear

I hope this would lead to the greatest advantage of all Fedora

+1 for your patch.

Yes it is going to break translations if we just apply it like that.
Few thoughts:
- We don't update POs anymore as it is done through transifex.net now
- We only upload POTs and pull POs.
- When many changes have to be made, we could use a staging instance in order
to provide a new POT and let some times for the translators to
localize, and proofread online.
Then, a merge is fine. This is clearly the best solution, but some
translators won't understand
clearly what they are translating (many resources on transifex.net).
That is what we do
  by the alpha/beta time.
- We could just apply like that, it's not a big change (but need to
notice translators),
  and we have done worst…

Re: Re: A clarification about Fedora-it.org

2012-05-30 Thread Kévin Raymond

Just a little reply...maybe this thing should be discuss on fedora
 ambassadors mailing list...
It should much great to work with existing and active Italian fedora
ambassadors and not with single person that don't collaborate with other
 people or other teams.

Dear Mario, I do not think this is the place to have a discussion with
these tones, as shareable, I do not think that others are interested in
 reading these boring things.

 +1

Agree, this is not really to the website team to decide.
It should be the Italian community, why not through the ambassador mailing list.
But this has also been raised to the advisory-board mailing list. We are
spreading the discussion (without going really further).

I prefer, and I think users prefer too, to see one specific local and
 official community portal.

I believe he was told there was no distinction between official and local?
 Or am I wrong.

No, you're perfectly right. There is no official local community,
there exist only strong and unified communities which have become a
sort of officiality in the end-user view, but nothing more.

What users will prefer them to decide, I do not think you can take
arbitrarily the right to say what users prefer, it is not a democratic
 reasoning.

 +1

It is far easier to have only one portal, one forum…
But if you guys feel the need to have a second one, that's because something is
not going right for everyone.

I am really disappointed to view this request from Stefano Mainardi and
Antonio Trande. They don't really collaborate with existing Italian Fedora
community...and with Italian Fedora Ambassadors. I and other Italian Fedora
Ambassadors read this request from fedora-website mailing list and not from
 a discussion in our team.

For me personally do not collaborate with the various ambassadors, but I
know exactly that different users who attend Fedora-it have been very
 active in the official community.

I've done in the past, but I follow and actively collaborate with other
open-source projects, I say this to clarify my position with you, if you
need to clear ideas about me. Even a simple Google search might help.

I hope fedoraproject collaborator could understand my point of view and my

We could understand facts, but we won't understand it as an Italian contributor.
We are abroad and only know what is written here. We don't *feel* how goes the
community.
Giving a GO for a website is a hard question. To prevent misjudging, should we
just say yes if the domain name is approved?.

I believe that there should be only one local community portal, but some other
could serve specific purpose. Like for test, devels, simple users… There are
many ways. Of course if it's only a dupplicate… One would grow faster.
Furthermore, infrastructure and moderation take lot of time, the time that we
loose at contribution.

There is no easy answer.

[snip]

Lets do something for the end-users of Fedora, it's the best thing we can do.

Our main goal is not to gather users… But to grab contributors :)
(But yeah I got your point).

The main problem here is that we don't have contributors willing to help
sorting that,
but the one directly involved.

IMHO it is not only about ambassadors, I know many contributors more actives at
spreading Fedora/going to events than real ambassadors. This is a Project wide
question involving the whole local community.

 Hello,
I see that there are some local communities who want to be included to the
same local fedoracommunity.org subdomain, such as Indonesia and now Italy.
I'm directly involved in that issue, as webmaster of fedoraonline.it, the

could be a problem in the future too, so why not discuss about some
guidelines which helps the local communities but also the website team to
define clearly the state of a community?
I'm thinking about a solution like the Ubuntu communities:
obviously, everyone can create a new local community, but only one community
rappresent the single State. I remember there are regular tests, which
verify the activity of the local community and if the site is just online.
If the test fails another local community site has the right to take the
 place of the precedent one.

Sharing resources is more efficient than spreading users I think, so it
should be obvious that the goal of the fedoracommunity site is to give the
end user a clearly identified local community.

+1

I'm open to be an active part in finding new guidelines, if you want.

I would add that Legal should not approve trademark license agreement
to the unknown if the local community already exist.
Example if my neighbor ask to register the greatitalianfedora.it, the
request should be rejected if the owner is not involved in the local
community.
But they need to understand how the local community works.
It's not easy, neither fast.

At least guidelines would help define a process and prevent end users
to ask for his own website reference…

Hi,

We want this community website to be precise but light.
We won't add all communities websites (shop, forums, wiki, planet,
blogs, trackers…).

Is fedora-it.org complementary with the actual one, http://www.fedoraonline.it ?
And do you have signed the trademark agreement with Legals to own the

fedoracommunity.org should refer to the main local community portal.
That will help to grow your community, I've heard several ambassadors

Without further info, I'll do things by myself and define the updating

somewhere on the websites wiki page).

For the Fedora hosted FUDCon site [1], we followed a simple process.
We would just make the changes in HTML and templates, verify them and
then commit them. The changes would reflect on the website after a delay
of roughly 1 hour. ( One only needs commit access to do this ).

However, for the purpose of FUDCon Pune we [2] setup a separate instance
with Drupal / COD [3]. We wanted to have a dynamic website with many features
which were simply not possible with a static website like fudcon.fp.o [1].

Therefore, fudcon.fedoraproject.org was essentially not used for FUDCon Pune,
in which I was involved. Here is the relevant site:
 http://fudcon.in/

If time is a constraint then I would suggest to go for a static web-site on
fudcon.fedoraproject.org, as configuring COD is a bit time-consuming task.
However, once it is configured correctly it will just work seamlessly.

Hi, Thanks Francesco,
I've seen with her… That this is a complete mess!
Adding the logistic list now that we need to sort this issue.

To summarize the fudcon.fpo websites status:
- From the Websites team perspective, we don't know how this website
is maintained, it was originally a staging solution waiting for a
Drupal instance to be set up (from my last 2 weeks research…)
- fudcon.fedoraproject.org is *really* outdated
- There is no FUDCon comitee, we don't have anyone to refer if
something is done wrong, or if something is missing.
- The FUDCon wiki pages have nothing about publishing in
fudcon.fedoraproject.org or any other alternatives
- The first maintainers of fudcon.fedoraproject.org are the one that
wanted to set up the Drupal instance (was insight helping them?), but
I can't find its current status, last info was on October 2011, and
involved guys are not responding (I think it was shreyankg and
tuxdna).

To sort this, I am also adding in CC the FUDCon owners of the last and
future events, if you guys have been trying to deal with this website
(fudcon.fpo) before…
If anyone has any input, please tell me about this Drupal thing,
otherwise I'll simply forgot about this and setup a working process
for fudcon.fedoraproject.org maintained by the websites team,
translated by translators, and fully designed in HTML/CSS. There will
be no foolish registering things.

Have a nice day,

1.- I can ask Mo to help me create a blog post about this to call Ninjas for

we only need someone to make it usable for Drupal.
2.- Adding information to the site won't be a problem (it should only be a
couple of pages for the moment that each one can edit) so editor-crew
should be the same organizer team of each year FUDcon (another problem
 solved)
3.- Infra is cover, so we only need a fresh Drupal where to add all info
(maybe do a simple archive for past FUDcon pictures and stuff)

Who are the maintainers of this Drupal instance, infra?
Who have the admin online account?

4.- Maybe take care and integrate fudcon facebook and twitter resources and
make them fill the page when we don't have time.

Do you think this might work as a midterm-long solution?

Yep, that would be great.

5- See how to integrate that with translators (that would be nice to
have it EN and LOCAL languages). Not important at the moment.

I am really sorry, for some unforeseen reasons this mail never saw my inbox.

When we did the Fudcon India website, tatica made the design, and me

I'm not sure whether that is the way. But we had some time constrains to be

What I would like is to define that somewhere.
Being on the websites team, I would have been able to help you with
this on time.

Because they are some work on the Drupal instance, that would be
better to 1) finish it and let FUDCon teams be autonomous, or 2) stay
in the static html websites with the websites team knowing that they
have to deal with it ;) (setting Trac component and so on).

We could look at these features and break them into 2 groups: 1)
 technical 2) casual user/front-end

I would put Gimp, CUPS color, Font Config, Network Manager and KDE in

The cloud/vm stuff is in the technical category.

So my thought is maybe we can create 2 slides, 1 targeted for each

DDG depends on Bing search api, right? I've recently read that Bing was

Hum, DDG is using several sources I think (I have juste looked for the
answer the last 10 minutes, without having the answer…).
But the fact is that you can use bang! syntax in order to have google,
bing, or other results.
If Bing change their api license, I am sure they will adapt. If they
don't, we could hard write this !sp bang syntax then to ask DDG to
give us results from startpage, or simply revert to Google if people
go crazy (But change is evolution).

 discussion here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Start.fpo_redesign

start.fpo is useful and used by many users (Mairin gave us some stats
about her blog).

Google nowadays is so not linux, i can't believe this is even
considered. What is 'free' about Google in the sense of our community
(sinds people are paying heavily for 'free' service with big chunks of
their sellable privacy, even 'not for money' isn't true), how valid is
the argument Users like the Google results.? O-m-g.

Ok, I should have written Users know the Google results, and they
like what they know.
I know that Google is not Open.
This discussion as also been raised at the Board, the result was:
- We choose what we want for start.fpo
- Browsers maintainers choose what they want in their packages.

I haven't checked about seeks update, but nowadays we could use
https://startpage.com/ which is search engine based on Google (it just
forward queries), but protecting our privacy. It uses Bing for
 pictures and blinkx.com for movies.

http://duckduckgo.com/ Is by far the most interesting search engine,
and using the bang! syntax (!sp) we could ask DDG to give us startpage
 results (i.e. Google!).

We are a leading edge community,
 we are not simple users,
we should change start.fpo, and see with our browsers maintainer if
 they want to switch.

Of course, this is only my voice, what about you?

 or  the volume
does not contain a recognized file system.  Can it be that ALL of those files

 are corrupted?

I want to download a  LINUX  BOOT  DISK,    PRE-MADE  and  ready to go,
 that will also
 operate on Windows 7  64 bit Op System of a VAIO -  VPCEG model -  laptop;
in order to boot up the data recovery or data backup function,   before
 sending it to Sony
Repair Center in Loredo, Texas,  where it is still under warranty.
 For privacy concerns all
personal data will be erased before the shipment.

I will pay up to $150 for the DVD  software,  if it is not available for free.
Regular data recovery software that was downloaded did not work.  Windows
 data recovery
software most likely will not work.  A computer instructor advised that I go
 around the problematic
Windows OS using Linux, which took him 6 hours to create.  Making one is NOT
 an option for me.

I have brand new recovery disks, set of 7, from Sony and a flash drive that
 has the same information which
I got from the computer itself.   The ASSIST  button is worthless.  And
nothing will boot up the system.
F1, F2, F3, F8, F10 work up to a point, then revert back to original message:

use  (that was not the case),  or faulty hardware or CD-ROM that
 is failing.

The last things before the problem was the icons on the desktop were moving
 around on their own
and then the power was turned off.  That is it.  The optical disk appears to
 be reading data,
the extended memory test (F3) succeeded,  the boot priority  (F2)  is
 correct.  However,
No way can I get to F11 or the recovery page.   I do have access to
 another computer with internet access.

Hi Eduardo,

Welcome!

We don't use PHP in Fedora (only to run mediawiki), but we do use a
lot of the above quoted languages.
Our websites use the Genshi python framework for I18n, that's where
I've personally learn Python!
The HTML pages/css was designed using the 960grid system.

From [1] you'll find how to clone our public repo in order to discover
how our websites are designed.
Currently fedoraproject.org is built against the f17-beta branch.
We are going to merge in the master one to prepare for the GA release day.
We have many easyfix tickets[2] who are going to be fixed in this master branch.

All our current tickets are in [3], see if one of them appear
interesting to you (I am sure that you can help validating our
CSS/HTML sources, see #79).
Please ask here or by IRC if you need any help to move forward in the
Websites team (and that's true for all new incomers who have
previously sent us their interest).
You won't have push access right now, but Sijis or I could sponsor you
if you submit interesting patches ;)

Re: fedoraproject.org banner problem

2012-04-19 Thread Kévin Raymond

Seems to be a problem with SeaMonkey 2.0.14 and firefox 3.6.24 (highest
rpms for Fedora 14), configuration mini fonttype etc in preferences is
 not the problem.
Fedora 16 as guest in VM with Firefox 11 doesn't have the problem.

Upgrading to latest Fedora of my laptop is not an option, as Fedora 14
is latest without (still not working) gnome 3 *and* i -as many do- like
to keep full control over my own machine.

Do you think it is a configuration problem or a PBKAC?

 Richard

Hi,

The website design is not dynamic, translators have to shorten their
translations if it appears to be too wide.
I agree, this is not the cleverest way to do.
You saw that it depends of your browser, probably because we use em
font size and not px.

Could you please open a ticket for that on our Trac?
https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-websites/
I can't tell you when this is going to be updated.

Moreover, you should upgrade to a supported Fedora Release (currently
Fedora 15-16), as you don't benefit of security updates anymore.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/End_of_life
GNOME 2 Vs GNOME 3 is not the question here, I suggest you to try
Xfce, or if you like the full control, to try KDE.

Cheers,

Please see tickets, #89[1] and #59[2].

I think the reference is http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FUDCon, we

someone taking care of that (simply add a notice open a ticket to the
websites team whenever you update this page).

Moreover, the actual source code is ugly, with many copy paste, that
would be awesome to define the text and re-use the same on each
occurrence, in order to help maintainers (you could see what was done
 for fedoracommunity.org) and translators.

Without further info, I'll do things by myself and define the updating
process (which should be explained in the fudcon organization page and
somewhere on the websites wiki page).

Well, we already require an active fas account, which means you have to
pass a captcha and have a valid email address.

I'm not sure what more we could do without burdening legit edits.

It is reasonably easy to rollback spam and disable people...

 kevin

We also have the small calculation to resolve before adding external link.

Should we build a watchlist of too much active people? I mean,
people doing several edits in few seconds?
I know that some pages are edited using scripts, so it's not really relevant.

Could someone
