Colleagues,

In Today's newspapers, the Japanese Government has advertised for Diploma,
Undergraduate and Postgraduate scholarships for 2017 and this is how to
apply;

Step 1

The interested persons should go to the Japanese embassy next to the
Ministry of Health HQ in Wandegeya and pick up free application forms.

Step 2

The forms should be filled in and returned to the embassy with copies of
university certified degree transcripts and certificates.

Step 3

The embassy will then call the shortlisted candidates for an English
language examination (previous exams can be found on the internet, please
check this website for past exams
http://www.studyjapan.go.jp/en/toj/toj0308e.html

Step 4

The Japanese embassy will then call the best students who excelled in the
English language exam for an oral interview where they will be asked basic
questions about themselves, what they know about Japan (economy, culture,
politics) and future plans.

Step 5

The selected candidates will be given a letter of acceptance from the
Ministry of Education, Japan and its from this point on that the student
has to use this document to search for a course and university of their own
choice, I remember I scanned the acceptance letter and emailed the
attachment to 3 professors in 3 universities in Japan until I got a
positive communication (The Japanese Government doesn't limit applicants on
courses so whatever the Japanese study, any foreign student can also apply
for the same course, in case you fail to get a course or university of
interest then then the Ministry of Education in Japan,Tokyo will help you
finds a course and university.

Step 6

After you are admitted into the University (accepted by the professor you
contacted by email), the embassy will then ask you to take your passport
for visa and air ticket issuance.

Dear Young Scientists/Colleagues,
Happy new year 2016.
I have finally reconnected with my Colleague in the University of South
Africa with UNESCO/UNISA Chair and is looking for a good student
especially a female with a good background in biochemistry to study an
MSC in Nano science and nanotechnology. The scholarship covers University
costs ,return air ticket /stipend. Those with biotechnology can also
apply. Males may also apply.
Any young female students interested should send me their CVS and
transcripts latest by Thursday this week so that I can send the CVS
because selection will be done early Feb 2016. Uganda has been given one
slot by my Colleague in that University. Let us not miss this new cutting
age science for the future.
Any Colleague who knows such students should inform them of this new
opportunity.
Don't come to my office or phone me because I am out of the Country; use
e-mails. Those interested can also visit the website for UNISA using
Google to learn more about the University.
Looking forward to receiving your CVS and transcripts soon.

Rural entrepreneurship - Driving innovation in agrifood value chains]Apply
now

Rural entrepreneurship has the potential to reduce poverty, increase food
security and reduce unemployment. But entrepreneurship supposes a level of
trust – and most actors in agricultural value chains do not really trust
each other. And although many causes can be pointed out, the really
important thing is to break the deadlock these value chains are in. This
course hands you the tools to do that. Read more

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is a member of

the Leibniz Association. With around 400 employees, it is one of the

world's leading research institutes in its field and generates knowledge

as a basis for policy, economy and society. At PIK, researchers from the

natural and the social sciences work together across disciplines.

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research is seeking to fill

*4 PhD student positions*

The department of Climate Impacts and Vulnerabilities invites applicants

for *four PhD positions* as part of a newly funded project to study

agricultural management options for greenhouse gas mitigation at the

global scale. Agriculture will have to increase production to meet the

demand for food, fuels and material of growing and richer populations

while simultaneously increasing resource conservation and sustainability

and adjust production methods to climate change. Agricultural management

is at the core of these challenges and will have to be studied in a

global context. The successful candidates will work with a global

gridded crop simulation model; closely cooperate within the newly found

research group, as well as with other scientists at PIK and with

international scientific collaborators (e.g. in AgMIP).

The successful applicants will have a university degree in Agronomy,

Soil sciences, Agricultural sciences, Geoecology, or a related

discipline. A background in scientific modeling, programming and/or data

analysis is desirable. We expect good skills in working with computers

(Unix/Linux) and scientific programming (C++, R, ...). The working

language is English.

*Payment will be based on German Public Tariff system (0.5 TV-L E13).*

The positions are funded on the basis of fixed term contracts for 36

months starting as soon as possible.

Interested candidates should send their complete application by email,

including C.V., a short letter of motivation and a reference from a

former supervisor, to:

*Closing date for applications is August 24^th , 2014 but the call we

PIK addresses crucial scientific questions in the fields of global

change, climate impacts and sustainable development. Researchers from

the natural and social sciences work together to generate

interdisciplinary insights and to provide society with sound information

for decision making. The institute is located on a scientific campus in

a forest in Potsdam, just outside Berlin, Germany. PIK seeks to increase

the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and

therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. Applications of disabled

persons with equal qualifications will be favorably regarded.

   Provide
support in assessing and enhancing impact

The recent Lancet nutrition series (2013) reported that rigorous
evaluations on the effects of nutrition projects and programmes are scarce
or non-existent.
This absence of an adequate monitoring & evaluation (M&E) system represents
a major constraint in food and nutrition insecurity programmes. Even though
there is evidence that a well-designed M&E system is valuable in assessing
and improving project performance, many project planners and managers are
not
fully able to develop and operate a M&E system. The course offered will
help to address this need. Read more

African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD)
Call for Applications for 2015 AWARD Fellowships

AWARD Fellows benefit from two-year fellowships focused on fostering mentoring partnerships, building science skills, and developing leadership capacity. Fellows stay in their institutions, continue their research, and travel to AWARD training courses held in various locations in Africa.

a good candidate.

Please don't bother to send copies of your academic documents at this

DEAR COLLEAGUES PLEASE READ THIS AND CIRCULATE TO RELATIVES, FRIENDS AND
INLAWS.

Given below is what happened to someone & he has narrated this in his own
words:

" I received a call from someone claiming that he was from my mobile
Service provider and he asked me to shut down my phone for 2 hours for
3G update to take place. As I was rushing for a meeting, I did not
question, but just shut down my cell phone.

After 45 minutes I felt very suspicious since the caller did not even
introduce his name.
I quickly turned on my cell phone and saw several missed calls from my
family members and the others were from the number that had called me
earlier –
I called my parents and I was shocked that they sounded very worried
asking me whether I am safe.

My parents told me that they had received a call from someone claiming
that they had me with them and asking for money to let me free. The
call was so real and my parents even heard 'my voice' crying out loud
asking for help.

My father was at the bank waiting for next call to proceed for money
transfer. I told my parents that I am safe and asked them to lodge a
police report.

Right after that I received another call from the guy asking me to
shut down my cell phone for another 1 hour which I refused to do and
hung up.

They kept calling my cell phone until the battery had run down. I
myself lodged a police report and I was informed by the officer that
there were many such scams reported.

MOST of the cases reported that the victim had already transferred the
money! And it is impossible to get back the money. Be careful as this
kind of scam might happen to any of us!!!

Those guys are so professional and very convincing during calls. If
you are asked to shut down your cell phone for updates by the service
provider, ASK AROUND!
Your family or friends might receive the same call. "

I wish we had more of such presidents especially in Africa!!!

*MONTEVIDEO: Leaders of other poor countries live in mansions and MPs take
up residence in plush hotel suites but Jose Mujica, President of Uruguay,
lives on an old farmhouse, having shunned the luxury of the presidential
palace in the capital city of Montevideo.***
* *

The 77-year-old vegetarian president lives on his wife's half-dilapidated
farmhouse where he fetches water from a well in a yard overgrown with weeds
and hangs out his clothes on a line to dry in the open.

While presidents of even some of the poorest countries in the world ride
in mile-long bullet proof limousines with hordes of security operatives and
elite military guardsmen armed to the teeth swarming around them, Mujica
drives a 1987 VW Beetle and his official retinue of guards consist of a
mongrel missing one leg and two police officers.

The BBC reports that Mujica not only lives austerely in spite of the fact
that he is a president, he donates 90 percent of his monthly salary of
$12,000 to charity. Donating so much of his salary to poor and small
entrepreneurs means that he receives a paltry $775 a month, comparable to
the income of the average Uruguayan.

BBC reports he comments: "I'm called 'the poorest president', but I don't
feel poor. Poor people are those who only work to try to keep an expensive
lifestyle, and always want more and more.
"This is a matter of freedom. If you don't have many possessions then you
don't need to work all your life like a slave to sustain them, and
therefore you have more time for yourself.”
"I may appear to be an eccentric old man... But this is a free choice," he
added.

He is a hero!

The number of the world's fish stocks in trouble today seems to exceed the
number of those in good shape. The causes are many, but overfishing is a

[WestNileNet] Alcohol and health

2011-10-02 Thread Bernard B. Obaa
FYI,

We know that drinking too much alcohol is bad for us. It gives us hangovers,
makes us feel tired and does little for our appearance - and that is just
the morning afterwards.

Long term, it increases the risk of developing a long list of health
conditions including breast cancer, oral cancers, heart disease, strokes and
cirrhosis of the liver.

Dear Prof Bashaasha, colleagues,

I have been conatacted by a colleague in Technology, who apparently has been
approached by a staff of DFCU who is urgently seeking up to 5 recent agric

be agric economics/agribusiness, may be extension as ell , but they have not
been that specific.

If you know any, kindly send me the name/names asap.

Maureen,

I initially forgot to attach the document. After realising I had sent the
email without the attachment, I tried to send a follow-up email with the
attachment but failed. I was told it was pending approval of the manager for
this forum. You may download the original document from Uganda Bureau of
Statistics (UBOS) website here

Thanks

Re: [WestNileNet] Barifa Land Grabbed

2010-12-14 Thread Bernard B. Obaa
What those people are doing is unacceptable. As WNF, we need to stop them
immediately. Just go ahead with your lawyers and file a suit. The more time
we take debating this, the more damage is being done on the land.

Thanks for bringing this issue to our notice.
