There have been several people wanting to have a forum. The core devs
have been opposed to that since we don't want to monitor what is
happening there. This sounds like a good option to me.

The biggest barrier I see that we have to pay for the use of jive. :-(

The other thing I see is that it is Java, and the sf.net site doesn't
support running Java from their servers.

I appreciate any new initiatives on enlarging the Wicket community,
however many of the core team won't have time to monitor and
contribute to such forums. At least I know I won't have time to
monitor the JavaRanch forum.
