[Bug 16937] PostgreSQL wrong protocol version

--- Comment #25 from Tim Starling   2009-05-09

It's a MediaWiki issue, we need to fix the error message in MediaWiki to
explain what the problem is and how to work around it. It might even be
possible to make MediaWiki work correctly with the older protocol version.

As for the PHP bug: they don't just fix themselves. It's in the PHP bug tracker
in the same form that it's here: vague and unisolated. MediaWiki is a major PHP
user and we often cooperate with the PHP devs to fix bugs like these.

In general, it's our policy to keep upstream bugs open until upstream is
properly fixed. It helps users find the bug report, and gives people a place to
comment when the upstream bug tracker is less accessible.

[Bug 18725] New: add revision suppression UI on deleted revision page

2009-05-08 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18725

   Summary: add revision suppression UI on deleted revision page

Status: NEW

  Priority: Normal
 Component: Deleting

On the UI for an individual deleted revision, there is a "hide revision" link
to go to Oversight, however there is no link to the suppression UI.

Often oversight requests include a set of links to precise deleted revisions,
and it would be helpful if we could action them immediately without having to
navigate back to the Special:Undelete page, which may unexpectedly be a very
long list.

To devs considering implementing this, please note that while the community has
rejected linking all dates, they have not rejected auto formatting. A simpler
solution would be to change the code to *not* link dates (but still auto format

content is hidden from sysops or not & the same would be useful for
block-hiding.

Currently, centralauth can only hide users, or not. We'd like to be able to set
whether admins can see these, or hide from everyone, just like with revision
deletion. This would presumably impact several other bugs relating to hiding
users. Since Aaron did revision deletion, he may have some clues for this
request as well.

I am not sure this is a Mediawiki specific bug. I have found the following bug

has a similiar problem with the latest version of php on windows.

So far there has been no update on the PHP website, in relation to this bug. So
I guess maybe we should wait for an update on the PHP bug, before looking at if
it is a bug with mediawiki?

Just to put things straight: there was _no_ proper "this extension is not
accepted because...". This is inacceptable, even from a MediaWiki big-whig.

As I stated several times, I am willing to work on this, but only with people
that have demonstrated the ability of working efficiently on this issue, which
you, Tim, have not.

As to your comment "If the lot of you got together and wrote code instead of
arguing": this is just a preposterous mockery of the work I did. If you just
lowered yourself to the ground of reality you would realize that it has taken
all of _four_ _full_ years for you to comment _just_ _twice_.

The worst part, both times you basically said "I'm not interested in writing
requirements documents". In effect you are saying "I don't take your work, but
I don't tell you why. Nya, nya, nya!"

That is just a waste of others (and my time). You are not a God, to waste my
time like that. Shame on you.

Yes, I am venting. But after 4 (in words, FOUR) years I very well deserve to
do so. And if you do not acknowledge that, you deserve even less respect than
I have left for you.

I'm assigning this to Trevor on the usability team. Trevor, we were talking
about this the other day. :)

Maintaining consistent item IDs/classes where possible makes it easier to deal
with things reliably, though of course there are limits on how consistent you
can be. We should be able to be a little more consistent on new skin designs...

[Bug 18722] New: Wrapper id consistency across skins

2009-05-08 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18722

   Summary: Wrapper id consistency across skins
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.15-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Page rendering
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: happy-me...@live.com

Currently, when trying to increase the specificity of CSS declarations; there
is no consistent ID that can be used across all skins. Declarations like this:

#content span.PDFlink a,
#mw_content span.PDFlink a{
background:

url("http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/23/Icons-mini-file_acrobat.gif/15px-Icons-mini-file_acrobat.gif";)
center right no-repeat;
padding-right: 17px;
}

Need to include two separate ids to work in all skins, because there's such a
mishmash of wrapper classes:

chick:   globalWrapper, content, bodyContent
standard:   content,  article
cologneblue:content,  article
modern:mw_content,
mw_contentholder
monobook:globalWrapper, content, bodyContent
nostalgia:  content
simple:  globalWrapper, content, bodyContent

As you can see, #content is closest to being universal, but not so. If two IDs
are needed (for higher specificity), the difficulty increases.

I'm not sure how best to resolve this; adding progressively more wrappers is
probably *not* the best solution. Adding #content to the modern skin would
probably be worthwile, however. Thoughts?

Where is the on-wiki discussion that produced a consensus to enable this
extension? Site requests should only be posted when there is a clear consensus
within a wiki community that the change is desirable.

More generally I think, indicate cascading protection on the list of templates.
There's no benefit to restricting it to "cascade-protected templates that are
protected because they're in a cascade that also includes this page".

Hmm, seems you're right; the fact that MW coughed and died with two screens of
stack backtrace was due to an entirely different piece of dubious code :D

Not to demean the work of whoever wrote this extension, it's pretty scrappy in
terms of integration with MediaWiki core. Thanks for that point on the tooltip

Looks like this isn't needed.

Closing this as INVALID; local PHP vs MySQL configuration issue where their
socket file paths don't match. (This is common on for instance Mac OS X systems
when PHP and MySQL are installed from separate sources -- stock Apple
preinstalled PHP and MySQL's package intaller for MySQL. Other Unix-like
systems may similarly have installs that default to non-matching locations.
Generally shouldn't happen if you installed both from the same package source,
but could always be funky!)

See the MySQL and PHP manuals for how to configure them:

Characterising the hearsay in comment #37 as "research" and then attacking it
on that basis is rather bizarre. It's just something someone told me on IRC.
All I wanted in comment #37 was a rigorous review of the issues. I still
haven't seen such a review, just a contrary opinion on a mailing list.

Yes, it's quite easy to do. If the lot of you got together and wrote code
instead of arguing about it on a bug report, it'd be done by now. Then I'd have
code to review.

I'm not interested in writing requirements documents at this time. I will
review code when it comes to me (and when I have time).

Created an attachment (id=6096)
 --> (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=6096)
Patch to Xml.php and Linker.php against r50336

A significant number of the legitimate/unavoidable uses of hardcoded HTML in
the codebase are to hardcode links; it is necessary to use hardcoding instead
of the functions from Xml.php or Linker.php because all these functions
HTML-escape attribute values. This means it is impossible to use
Linker::link() or Xml::tags() to add a link when you need to add javascript
onclick handlers or other things that need raw HTML. The HTML-escaping needs
to be avoidable.

This patch adds a parameter through the call stack right down to
Xml::expandAttributes() to optionally circumvent the call to
Sanitizer::encodeAttribute(); by the time this bubbles up to Linker::link()
it's wrapped in one of the available $options values. Tested.

[Bug 18708] Move .plainlinks declaration to common stylesheets

2009-05-08 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18708

--- Comment #2 from Happy-melon   2009-05-08 17:04:43 UTC

Created an attachment (id=6095)
 --> (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=6095)
Moves .plainlinks to common stylesheets

The !important declarations are *not* required, only that the override has a
higher specificity than the original asignations. Simply adding "div#ID" will
work.

Patch, tested on FF3; no reason I'm aware of why it shouldn't work in anything
capable of adding the icons in the first place. The patch *itself* might be
dodgy; I've got a huge amount of stuff going on on my svn checkout ATM, so it
was cut-and-pasted together from a couple of different diffs, with irrelevant
bits cut out. It should apply, though. The *content* of the changes has been
tested.

[Bug 18717] New: Desired namespace TILLEGG

2009-05-08 Thread bugzilla-daemon

   Summary: Desired namespace TILLEGG

ReportedBy: v85.wikipe...@gmail.com

As the other wiktionaries, the Norwegian Wiktionary also has some pages
outlining certain aspects of various languages' grammar and the alike. Until
recently, these were all placed in the Wiktionary namespace as
"Wiktionary-tillegg:PAGENAME". A brief discussion was held at no:wikt:Tinget
(http://no.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Tinget#Wiktionary-prefiks), which
concluded that these pages should be moved from the namespace
"Wiktionary-tillegg" to the plain "Tillegg" (synonymous to the English
"Appendix" or French "Annexe" namespace). This move has already taken place,
although the namespace has not been created. Currently, pages such as
"Tillegg:Adjektiv i fransk", "Tillegg:Adjektiv i norsk" and the alike therefore
exist in the (main) space.

We therefore kindly request that the namespace "TILLEGG" be created, with the
corresponding discussion page "TILLEGGDISKUSJON", following the model of other
discussion pages.

proposals would be:

.plainlinks a {
background: none !important;
padding: 0 !important;
}

This would however require that the skins set their specificity different. That
would need to be tested at least.
Alternative is:

#content .plainlinks a,
#mw_content .plainlinks a {
background: none !important;
padding: 0 !important;
}

The !important is needed because the assigning of icons actually happens at a
LATER time (the skins), and would thus override this "global" class.

There are two duplicate and conflicting declarations for padding and margin of
.catlinks in the main.css of the Modern skin. They should be reduced. I also
propose to use "padding: 0.1em 0.3em 0.1em 0.3em;" to make the categories text
clearly seperate from the borders, making it more legible.

[Bug 18709] ApiParamInfo: description missing

On action=help it looks so:

Parameters:
  title  - Page title
  section- Section number. 0 for the top section, 'new' for a new
section
  text   - Page content
  token - Edit token. You can get one of these through prop=info
  summary- Edit summary. Also section title when section=new
  minor  - Minor edit
  notminor   - Non-minor edit
  bot- Mark this edit as bot
  basetimestamp - Timestamp of the base revision (gotten through
prop=revisions&rvprop=timestamp).
   Used to detect edit conflicts; leave unset to ignore
conflicts.
  starttimestamp - Timestamp when you obtained the edit token.
   Used to detect edit conflicts; leave unset to ignore
conflicts.
  recreate - Override any errors about the article having been deleted in
the meantime
  createonly - Don't edit the page if it exists already
  nocreate - Throw an error if the page doesn't exist
  captchaword- Answer to the CAPTCHA
  captchaid - CAPTCHA ID from previous request
  watch - Add the page to your watchlist
  unwatch- Remove the page from your watchlist
  md5- The MD5 hash of the text parameter, or the prependtext and
appendtext parameters concatenated.
   If set, the edit won't be done unless the hash is correct
  prependtext- Add this text to the beginning of the page. Overrides text.
   Don't use together with section: that won't do what you
expect.
  appendtext - Add this text to the end of the page. Overrides text
  undo - Undo this revision. Overrides text, prependtext and
appendtext
  undoafter - Undo all revisions from undo to this one. If not set, just
undo one revision

action=paraminfo gives only description of 'type="integer"' and not of the
other param, this infos only available on action=help.

In my opinion it is helpful to get all description by action=paraminfo which
also available by action=help

This particular feature seems to function properly in the configure extension

Maybe the configure extension just needs to be installed by default when
installing MediaWiki... Or may be we need an on-wiki extension installer so
that extensions like this can be easily installed (it would be nice if such an
extension manager could also handle installation of skins).

This should be implemented in core rather than as an extension since it is as
hard for inexperienced users to add an extension as it is to change the logo. I
think it is a needed feature though. I recently saw a competion where high
schools competed in building web sites. MediaWiki was one of 3 cms's in use
(the others being Joomla and WordPress) and I'm sad to say that not one of the
teams using MediaWiki managed to change the logo or change skin. This does not
seem to have been an issue for the teams using Joomla or WordPress.

For PHP I used the php-5.2.9-1-win32-installer.msi from the official site. For
PostgreSQL I used the newest available PostgreSQL 8.3 windows installer from

Hope this helps.

There are a number of WAMP(Windows Apache MySql/Postgresql PHP) Installers

That way it can be determined if it is the installer which is the problem.

Reopening. Reproduced by three people, obviously the issue is not
idiosyncratic. Needs a better error message, explaining exactly what is wrong.
It would help if someone here could identify what the actual problem is.
