If you have specific "How do I do " questions I'd be more then willing to
answer. I'd just rather not have to trace the myriad of function calls and new
templating thats done.

Now nothing should be done here I guess. Just wait for WMF's deployment of a
later version and check it.

This is a bug in Wikimedia component, not MediaWiki.

I still consider this bug has been fixed by r69874. The only reason you find
onther large pages fail to load is the MediaWiki served by WMF has not be
updated to 1.17, it still 1.16wmf4.

This is _really_ nitpicky, but, presumably vector should have a
list-style-type: disc to be consistent with the image of the disc, so the
fallback is consistent.

Like Anirudh mentioned earlier on this thread, the larger Mediawiki community
may not be interested in this. Moreover, the traffic can get quite large as
more and more city meet-ups happen here in India.

IMHO, there is a need a seperate alias for mediawiki and related tools related
to Indic languages. Wikimediaindia-l is a generic list which as of now
shouldn't be used for pure technical mails. This new co-ordination mail will
also help attract a lot of developer community in India.
"wikimedia-in-tech" is better name , if you ask me.

In that case, surely it'd be beneficial to use wikitech-l? Presumably these
would be all new developers that are not familiar with they way things work in

will probably decrease the chance of their extensions being deployed (or I

On second thought, even if it was truncated in ParserOutput, the api would
still output the wrong sortkey on action=parse, because its outputting the
equivalent of cl_sortkey_prefix, not cl_sortkey. The question is, should it be
outputting the prefix, or the final (binary) sortkey?

Does anyone know how these values are actually used in practise (so which is
appropriate?). Perhaps we should output both? I'm leaning towards outputting
the final binary sortkey here, but I could also imagine someone would have use
for the human readable sort key as well, so I'm unsure.

cc'ing Aryeh Gregor in case he has any thoughts on this, seeing as he did most
of the category stuff.

Yes, when the truncate inside LinksUpdate is needed, because of extensions,
than keep the extra substring.

The reason i didn't do it in ParserOutput (well in addition to the parser being
scary), is that an extension can add stuff to that array in several different
ways, which makes it hard to put the check directly in ParserOutput.

Perhaps we could add a check in ParserOutput::addCategory where categories are
added 99% of the time, and still keep the extra substring check in LinksUpdate.
Does that sound sane?

[Bug 26614] New: truncate sortkey when adding to ParserOutput

2011-01-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Summary: truncate sortkey when adding to ParserOutput
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.18-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Categories
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: duplicate...@googlemail.com

Using a very long sortkey (>255 bytes) let the api module action=parse to
output that long sortkey, but the database stored later a truncated sortkey.

Please truncate the sortkey when adding to the ParserOutput, so action=parse
shows the right sortkey.

Please truncate whole multibyte characters and avoid half bytes inside the
database.

By the way, you can remove the truncation from LinksUpdate (r79706).

Thanks.

WTF... Bugzilla truncated my comment when I tried to include the 4-byte Unicode
character in it. Trying again with the actual characters removed:

The title is valid UTF-8, and consists of 63 repeats of the 4-byte character
U+28B81 followed by the 3-byte character U+5583. My browser can't display the
first character, but Googling for it led me to [[Prince of Tang (Shaowu)]]
where it is used in the subject's personal name and discussed in a footnote.
The second character apparently means "keep talking, chattering; mumble"
according to http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%96%83

Ps. Explanatory comment added in r79769.

It seems to be constructing a title consisting of 255 bytes, each of which
needs to be URL-encoded: that should be about as long as a URL for a page in
the given namespace can get.

These were my thoughts too. Is there a reason that this type of discussion
couldn't take place on wikimediaindia-l, mediawiki-i18n, or wikitech-l?
Usually we only create specialized lists like this when there's too much
traffic on a list that we need to split it.

Is there really anything that Indian users here would be working on that
wouldn't apply to other wikis?

configured to consider to be a URL? Mediawiki even outputs a wgUrlProtocols js

$form->setTitle($this->getTitle());
$form->displayForm('');

=== 1.16.1 ===

=== trunk ===

The main change in 1.17 was to introduce the 'name' override: if you specified
'name' => 'Foo' in the descriptor array, that would be used unconditionally,
and without any modification. That applies to all types of fields. Given
that, there's no reason to special-case hidden fields *except* for B/C. And as
I said on IRC, I'd rather have it consistent and transiently incompatible, than
inconsistent forever.

Specific issue raised was fixed in r79758.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26612

   Summary: Regression: Postgres cannot install
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.17
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: ASSIGNED
  Keywords: postgresql
  Severity: blocker
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Database
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: innocentkil...@gmail.com
CC: g...@turnstep.com, overlo...@gmail.com,
m...@everybody.org
Blocks: 26611

I'm aware this regression is a result of the massive refactoring I and others
have done for new-installer.

However, I need help from the postgres guys on moving
DatabasePostgres::initial_setup() to the new-installer format (using callbacks
similar to MysqlInstaller's setupUser). As best I can tell, this function does
a few major things (and is called twice):
* Uses the superuser to create the less-privileged user that will access the
database (this should copy MySQL's setupUser, although maybe at a different
stage)
* Creates the database/schema and assigns the user
(PostgresInstaller::setupDatabase() should be updated to include this)
* Sets up ts2 if needed (am I correct in remembering this is old and probably
won't be needed much longer?)
* Setup Plpgsql if needed
* A few other minor tweaks (date format, timezone, etc)

These steps should be split out into functions in PostgresInstaller and added
as callbacks to the correct stops in the install steps.

I didn't assign this to anyone, but this should be considered a blocker to the
1.17 release. CC'd Postgres guys and Mark H.

Fixed the variable collision in r79722. This is virtually certain to have been
the cause of the bug, but because it only happens for conflicted updates (i.e.
when two processes are updating the same blob concurrently), it's virtually
impossible to test. Closing as FIXED anyway, reopen if the error appears again.

Create protection is not in $wgRestrictionTypes because it's a different beast.
Unlike edit, move, upload and any custom restriction types, it's not applied to
existing pages but to titles. For this reason, its implementation is completely
(? at least mostly) separate from other protection types.

Making it disableable is a legitimate feature request, but it should not be
done through $wgRestrictionTypes.

No, because they use the core services to send the email. No point in creating
multiple instances of the same code in different extensions when the main issue

After fix of bug 26574 I have notice, that the create protection is also not in
$wgRestrictionTypes, so it is not possible to disable create protection on a
wiki.

This can be more complex, because create protection is listed on
Special:ProtectedTitles, not Special:ProtectedPages, the api listed this with
list=protectedtitles and not with list=allpages&apprtype=, due to seperated
database table.

It is possible to disable create protection?

Thanks.

[Bug 26606] New: URLs in CodeReview "new comment added" emails are a mixture of secure and insecure

2011-01-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26606

Summary: URLs in CodeReview "new comment added" emails are a
mixture of secure and insecure
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: minor
  Priority: Normal
 Component: CodeReview
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: happy-me...@live.com
CC: innocentkil...@gmail.com, s...@reedyboy.net

Presumably dependent on which server the person triggering the messages is
working from. It looks like the "follow up changes" emails always use the
insecure server.

[Bug 24709] Upload wizard: Browser compatibility

--- Comment #5 from HenkvD 2011-01-06 12:42:03 UTC ---
Bug 26009 should have solved this for IE6 & IE7, but I still have this problem
on IE7
1) bug 25965 UploadWizard "steps" appear before styling (in fact it still
stops here)
2) Current errors are
Line: 10925 Char: 1 Error: Expected identifier, string or number Code: 0 URL:

Line: 80 Char: 1 Error: 'window.mediaWiki' is null or not an object Code: 0

[Bug 26605] New: Use strtr instead of str_replace when possible

2011-01-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26605

Summary: Use strtr instead of str_replace when possible
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
   URL: http://php.net/manual/en/function.strtr.php
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org

The PHP function strtr is like 4 times faster than str_replace and would be
pretty useful to use in MediaWiki in many places.

In the source code, I've noticed many replacements of underscores to spaces and
vice versa, often in the form str_replace("_", " ", $foo), whereas strtr($foo,
"_", " ") is much faster.

Not a DNS issue but a web server config issue.
