The current summary mentions only thumbnails and is incorrect: for reuploads,
everything is currently broken, originals as well.
I've added the current situation to the summary, leaving also the previous

There is no merit to the claim that users are negatively affected by this for
the reasons already given.

It's not a reason to add further inconsistency. This is a very selective target
that doesn't visually impact users, and that there are far bigger fish to fry
from a consistency standpoint.

The "main styles" aren't increasing signups to Wikipedia. If we're calling out
the lack of consistency of this page with others, you have to look at all of
the elements that are visually distinct, not just the typography (which, again,
won't be visually distinct). Reverting all of the inconsistent elements on the
page would invalidate the impact of the design.

The "demonstrated need" is that it works in its current state and deviating
from that, even in a small way, might affect its impact.

Again, it's not any different for users that have it.

Which is mostly me, and I'm fine with it.

If we could, we would. Data is what makes the case. Gradually moving tested
changes (with positive results) into an extension was the advised strategy by
everyone involved in these design updates, so that's how we're doing it.

[Bug 44394] Account creation interface should not be using helvetica/arial when the rest of the skin does not

2013-01-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44394

If it keeps coming up, perhaps that should be a sign that it is indeed a
problem.

Existing inconsistency is not a reason to add further inconsistency; it should
not be there at all. Until a new style is determined, the main styles should be
maintained across everything - not just to give the users a better overall
experience due to being less often confused, but also so it is feasible, once
said new style is determined, to actually apply it.

I appreciated that the third e in e3 is experiments, but the account creation
interface is no longer an experiment - it is currently deployed in full and
should not be using experimental formatting without a demonstrated need.

That said, these experiments themselves are indeed precisely the place to be
determining the most effective new styles for overall, but those styles should
remain in the experiments. That they do not, and that many other products are
also being deployed with mismatched styles is unfortunate, but it does not make
any of this right. All it really does it make the sites more difficult for
users to get used to using and more difficult for developers as well, not just
those who will eventually be tasked with cleaning up the entire mess, but
especially anyone currently creating new components, as there is simply no way
to know what styles and existing infrastructure to use and thus they have that
much more to deal with on top of everything they actually meant to be doing.

As for this specifically, if Helvetica and Arial are truly superior to the
defaults (which in most cases should probably be Helvetica and Arial anyway if
this is so), make the change in core. If you can make your case it should
certainly be a trivial enough change.

[Bug 44394] Account creation interface should not be using helvetica/arial when the rest of the skin does not

2013-01-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44394

This seems to keep coming up. I may revert it simply to avoid further
headaches. But regardless...

To your point about inconsistency: yes, this typeface is inconsistent with the
rest of the site, and inconsistency is bad. We're testing out new styling. The
new styling seemed to work, or at least it wasn't a hindrance (more people sign
up to Wikipedia now). So, we're very slowly building a MW extension to apply
this styling site wide which will hopefully eliminate the inconsistency.
Ideally this would happen faster, but it's a 20% project for everyone and is
harder than it sounds. But that was the end-goal, and it still is.

So we agree that the typeface is inconsistent and inconsistency is bad. Big
blue buttons are also inconsistent. So is CSS3 font smoothing, big input
fields, vertical input field labeling, pink tipsy errors, giant gray icons,
properly aligned checkboxes, and big bolded headers in special pages. Should we
change all of those back too?

What about the random sprinkling of Lucida Grande in our Search field? The fact
that we use at least a dozen different font sizes throughout the site? That we
seem to use monochromatic icons in some places and 3D icons in similar
contexts? If I tried to list every easy-to-spot design inconsistency on
Wikipedia I'd go over my character limit.

Sorry if this is sounding like a rant, but my points are:

1. We're working, albeit slowly, on making things more consistent
2. Wikipedia is designed inconsistently anyways, and in far worse ways
3. This inconsistency is easier to spot for developers rather than users

By (3), I mean that Helvetica Neue is mostly present on Macs (now a meaningful
part of our user base; no derision please). Depending on the browser, Helvetica
is likely the default sans-serif on those machines and is quite similar to HN.
HN just has a better range of font-weights, which leaves more options for type
treatment in the future. On machines that don't have it, nothing changes at
all. You'll mostly spot this if you're reading the code, not viewing the page.
The premise of this bug masquerades as empathetic to users, but as it's stated
it's mostly a bother for developers.

As to Steven's mention of my design rationale, here it is:

Simply put, it's widely accepted that Helvetica Neue reads better than the
default sans-serif *on systems that have it*. This is an optimization for
systems that have a resource; others are not affected. We're testing out design
ideas on a small scale and spreading them across the site if they've been
successful; this will lead to temporary inconsistencies, but we're trying to
make those short. This account creation page was a success, so I suggest we
continue using its patterns, including typography.

And these do not jive with the contents of the page - they are indeed rather
jarring. The appearance suggests that they are a part of the page, not above
it, and the layout should be more than capable of accommodating that without
them winding up on top of things, especially given that appearance.

They may stand out sufficiently for usability, and that is good, but we can and
should be striving for more than pure functionality and make things look nice
as well. Aesthetics are not something to rule out or ignore, especially as they
also increase user happiness regardless of the function itself.

I have not seen GuidedTour, but if you believe it could use a visual look-over
I would be more than happy to do so with that as well.

As you say, tooltips generally do overlap other content, and we went through
several iterations on the tooltip design, so we were aware of that fact. You
don't redesign the persistent content of a Web page to accommodate interactive
error messages, which most users shouldn't see anyhow. You design error
messages to jive with the contents of the page when and if they appear. (So
say, pushing the benefits out of the way to make room for tooltips at all
screen resolutions, is not something I am going to recommend we implement.)

If you look at this compared to the style of the GuidedTour tooltips, you'll
immediately see that simply adding drop shadow isn't quite enough to ensure
readability. Choosing color fill in backgrounds for the tooltips was our choice
here, and I think we hit on a decent one considering in remote tests users had
no trouble identifying and reading the tooltips. I'm going to leave this bug
open because we'll probably keep tinkering with the tooltip appearance as we
productize, but I think it's perfectly fine for now.

by looking at the value of $wgClickTrackingLog in CommonSettings.php.

Leaving cookie garbage in user's browsers is not cool, obviously, nor is
collecting data destined for the waste basket. I'll take a look at what is
still depending on ClickTracking. When I last checked AFTv5 had extensive
dependencies on it, but Matthias Mullie has since removed it.

In any case, regardless of your tone or whatever, I'm sure Munaf would be happy
to explain his design choice.

Bug ID: 44415
   Summary: Drop possessive from watchlist
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Watchlist
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org

CC: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

It shouldn't be labelled 'My watchlist' when it's showing the user their
watchlist per reasons laid out in Bug 41672.

It especially shouldn't say 'My watchlist' and then 'x pages on your watchlist'
a couple lines down. This makes it inconsistent as well as unnecessarily
familiar.

Apparently we've all gone insane, but at least it's not inside our heads as

Hey :). So, I've just been talking to Leslie, one of our more awesome Ops
engineers - and by 'awesome' I mean 'she spent 8 hours being batted around tech
support and developers at the company that makes some of our hardware, and even
more troubleshooting'. She's been working literally non-stop on this since
Friday, and is incredibly sorry about both the problem and the fact that it's
taking so long. Hopefully we'll have it resolved soon: I'll let you know as
soon as we have an update :).

This means that RC with the "hide logged in users" option (something that is
used a lot by patrollers) is flooded with Wikidata edits, as there are way more
of them then local anonymous edits. This is a major problem right now for the
Hungarian Wikipedia.

[Bug 38664] Merge items in Wikidata

2013-01-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38664

Yes. It would be a move rather than a true merge.

Yes cut/copy/paste is very slow for items with a lot of links. This move
function will help speed it up while we are waiting for a true merge function
to be developed.

Do we need a redirect? Wikidata is CC0 so we don't have to keep a reference to
the original contributor. As I have been merging via cut/copy/paste I have just
asked for the item I merged from to be deleted with the justification "merged
to Q".

Mostly I just do this for pages with small numbers of links because it is such
a pain to do for pages with lots of links. When I get this move tool I will do
the pages with lots of links.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38664

That would not be a merge operation but a move on individual entries in the
item. A merge is rather high level and each sitelink, and later on statements,
would be transfered. That would probably also imply some way to mark some
entries to not be transferred, and a way to set up the redirect.

It could be that a cut/copy/paste -solution would be simpler, but it would also
be very slow for large items. And then we need a way to change an item into an
redirect.

This is not an issue with Git or Gerrit really, but rather Labs. Due to the way
labs is setup, you are unable to SSH from Labs to the production cluster (this
includes Gerrit).

Simply put: you cannot use Gerrit over SSH from Labs. As a result, git-review
isn't going to be very useful at all.

However, if you want to still do operations with Gerrit over HTTPS, you can do
that. If you visit your HTTP Password panel in your preferences[0], you can
generate a randomized password (and clear it/regenerate a fresh one). With this
password, you can perform all of the write operations over https://.

For example: `git push https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/p/mediawiki/core
HEAD:refs/for/master`, which would prompt you for your username/password.

So yeah, I'm marking this WONTFIX, since we're not going to open up SSH from
labs to gerrit. However, I believe a viable workaround exists with HTTPS (and
really, this is the default behavior for most sites that don't even enable SSH
to Gerrit or use git-review).

curiosity where is that quote from? Somewhere public or secret ops mailing

issues.

In regards to priority - while it doesnt prevent reading I would point out that
wiki is hawiain for quick, not for "thirty days or so until entries fall out of

(In reply to comment #66)

Likely because it describes the bug better. Varnish is an HTTP accelerator
which routes web site requests to appropriate clusters (load balancing). It is
used by Wikimedia. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varnish_%28software%29 for
more information.

> What's the problem with fixing this bug?

See comment 64. It was explained there.

> There must be *thousands* and *thousands* of examples.

The problem here is not missing examples, the problem is finding reasons.

I am going to quote some more info from Leslie here in case that comment 64
wasn't sufficient. I've added a few explanatory words for some terms to
hopefully make this more understandable:

The problem is about multicast requests to send HTCP purge requests to group
239.128.0.112 port 4827.
The requests arrive at a machine in Tampa ("dobson") where they are put through
a multicast to unicast relay to send them to our European AS for cache purges.
Until earlier this week, these notices were sourced from the old Tampa
datacenter as well, so if this problem existed, it was masked. This week, we
switched them to be sourced from the new eqiad datacenter and then discovered
that the traffic for group 239.128.0.112 (and ONLY group 239.128.0.112) was not
being delivered.
[...]
In addition, if we look at the multicast routing on cr1-sdtpa.wikimedia.org and
cr2-pmtpa.wikimedia.org, it does not seem to be seeing the sources of traffic
for 239.128.0.112, even though it is fine for all of the other groups.

[Bug 39507] Upload by URL fails without giving any error

2013-01-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39507

The problem seems to be that the form shows the necessary controls for
uploading by URL even if the user does not have permission to do so, while the
code for processing the form fails silently if the user does not have
permission (perhaps assuming that the necessary controls would ''not'' display
in this case, in which case this condition could only be the result of a
deliberate hack).

To reproduce this bug, then, all you have to do is have $wgAllowCopyUploads set
TRUE and then attempt an upload while logged in as a user who does not have
upload_by_url permission.

Suggested remedy: display a message indicating that the user doesn't have the
upload_by_url permission, and link to this page for further explanation:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgAllowCopyUploads

(In reply to comment #62)
> Sounds like different root cause (since esams still uses squid instead of
> varnish afaik).

I don't know why the title of the bug was changed to something with "Varnish".
Originally the bug was about invalidation not working when re-uploading files
from *Germany*. If there are multiple problems (which is obviously the case)
you should split this into multiple bugs. Here is an other example from today:

File description page:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Laser_mirror_reflection.jpg

Broken garbage including the original size (!):
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/Laser_mirror_reflection.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/82/Laser_mirror_reflection.jpg/170px-Laser_mirror_reflection.jpg

How it should look:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/82/Laser_mirror_reflection.jpg/120px-Laser_mirror_reflection.jpg

Tracert is the same as above. This is so damn annoying. What's the problem with
fixing this bug? There must be *thousands* and *thousands* of examples. It's
reported by dozens of users in almost every discussion page in every project:

FWIW although MediaWiki allows you to insert multiple h1s into an article via =
heading = I think this is wrong in the context of MediaWiki. A page should only
have one h1.

For the purpose of a script you can just access the h1 or the first h1 if the
wiki does tend to disobey this rule. You shouldn't need a class or id.

I think this happens because we're hitting the PHP max_input_vars limit [1].

Have you tried to mark only the revisions you don't want to restore and use the
"invert selection" button instead of mark the ones you want to restore? That
will lower the number of variables sent to the server (if they're less than the
revisions to restore) and allow you to restore the page.

But anyway, the Special:Undelete needs pagination, and I've filled bug 44410
about that.

[Bug 44410] New: Add pagination when displaying deleted revisions on Special:Undelete

Bug ID: 44410
Summary: Add pagination when displaying deleted revisions on
Special:Undelete
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Page deletion
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: martinezn...@gmail.com
CC: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

When restoring a deleted page, it presents a form to put a reason for the
undeletion, and below there's a list of *ALL* revisions that were deleted, with
checkboxes to select each of them, without any pagination.

This presents problems with pages with lots (thousands) of deleted revisions.
For example, deleting for merging histories, "accidentaly" delete a page, hide
a specific revision, etc:

* If you attempt to load the Special:Undelete for that page, you may get a
timeout an OOM or your browser crash/eat all your memory.

* If it even loads and you want to select lots of individual revisions to
restore, you may hit the max_input_vars limit [1] (see bug 18687) and the
selection won't be applied.

Pagination should be like page history.

Of course, pagination would be tricky for doing partial restoring, since on
pagination you will lost the previous marked checkboxes. But at least the
undelete page would load on pages with huge number of deleted revisions, and
one could select revisions to restore in smaller batches.

[Bug 44065] PageTriage: the review action is incompatible with the presence of Pending Changes

2013-01-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44065

No, just the first problem. 'review' in a PageTriage context is distinct from
'review' in a FlaggedRevs context - it's the same as patrol. And the userright
for patrol is, well, autoconfirmed.

So the problem would appear to be that FlaggedRevs refuses to class the page as
patrollable and so PageTriage dies. That's it. It's just FlaggedRevs that needs
a tweak.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44065

I 'think' the potential problem is - FlaggedRevs doesn't allow patrolling on
any reviewable page by hooking into user permissions (evil) and Page Triage
finds that the user can't review if he doesn't have patrolling rights (which
apparently he doesn't have) and doesn't show the curation toolbar.

comment from FlaggedRevs.hooks.php
# Don't let users patrol reviewable pages (where reviewed <=> patrolled)

comment from PageTriage.hooks.php
// Don't show anything for user with no patrol right

Again I think this what is happening.

[Bug 35974] Preference or default setting to open search result lists in new tab via Ctrl-click

> How is this not bug 44393?

Bartosz Dziewoński. I see what you are trying to do, I think. Let me suggest
this. There is already Bug 17808 "Have search suggest results open in a new tab
on middle click".

This bug thread (35974) we are in now is currently focused on this: "open
search result lists in new tab via Ctrl-click".

So since I removed search suggestions from the title of this thread, there is
no longer a need for Bug 44393. It is only one post so far anyway, and this
thread here is where most discussion has occurred concerning search result
lists in new tabs.

I get the impression that Gerrit change I87940ca8 effects only search
suggestions and not search result lists.

The Firefox browser can not normally open form submit results in a new tab.
Neither by Ctrl-click, Shift-click, or right click. Try the search form at the
top of this page:

With Firefox one has to install an addon such as TabSubmit:
*https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/tabsubmit - "Lets the user
direct the submission of a form to a new tab or window."

[Bug 44409] New: "Recent changes" page should have options View (newer N | older N) as in history pages, (N = No. of Displayed Items)

Bug ID: 44409
Summary: "Recent changes" page should have options View (newer
N | older N) as in history pages, (N = No. of
Displayed Items)
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.21-git
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Recent changes
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: mr.princemat...@gmail.com
CC: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

"Recent Changes" page displays recent 50 edits by default. I don't see any
option to view next 50 changes. I can change the number of displayed items to a
higher number, say 500. But still there is no option to view next 500 changes.
In history pages, there is option to view "Newer N" & "Older N" changes where N
is number of items displayed. It would be nice if that option was available in
"Recent Changes" page as well.

[Bug 44390] Move the 'show advanced fields' option when submitting bugs to the bottom.

I'm in for small (maintainable) custom changes (styling "Show Advanced
Fields"), but for changing the order of fields in enter_bug.cgi I'd recommend
proposing and discussing upstream in bugzilla.mozilla.org as you have valid
points that the current design could be improved.

Hence why I would put forward that the entire block of options should be moved
down for the same reason I submitted this bug in the first place - the extra
fields do not belong in the middle/top any more than the toggle does.

I've provided reasons why putting it at the bottom might create other problems,
and why I consider it slightly worse than the current position.

[Bug 44398] Cannot use git review on my instance. git review has been setup, but cannot connect to gerrit (see traceback inside)

IIRC git-review checks .gitreview for how to access Gerrit.
Does a .gitreview file exist in your checkout, and if so what's its content?

+1 for this. Also, a way to specify a different block setting for a user and an
IP address would be handy.
