This came from the Hebrew Wikipedia feedback page, I could not replicate it in
the English Wikipedia

It seems to happen only in Firefox.

To reproduce -

1. Go to this sample page:
https://he.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D7%9E%D7%A9%D7%AA%D7%9E%D7%A9:Nurick/%D7%91%D7%93%D7%99%D7%A7%D7%95%D7%AA_-_%D7%A2%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%9A_%D7%97%D7%96%D7%95%D7%AA%D7%99&oldid=14834614&veaction=edit

2. Put the cursor a couple of character to the left of the word "יפן" (third
paragraph, the word with the reference attached)

3. Move the cursor so it is between the word and the reference.

4. Add a period.

Watch a pawn appear.

* Firefox 25.0.1 on Windows and on Ubuntu

@Isarra, sorry if you think my response was blunt, but the key to any bug
report is context.

The only useful information I could gather from your report was: 'custom not
working'. But i don't know what custom looks like (it's not in our git repo)
and 'not working' can be anything from user error to a crashed computer.

If people start writing their own php scripts, i expect them to be able to
write a proper bug report. Handholding is reserved for the less advanced users.

[Bug 56946] Add URL for OAuth Consumers

Erik Moeller changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 CC||e...@wikimedia.org

See also bug 58193. I'm not sure I agree that a change tag should link directly
to a consumer-specified URL. What I like about a MediaWiki-generated page like:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:OAuthListConsumers/view/90b858d7d1179a1b4eee89956e735e80

1) We can localize it and display it in the context/language of the wiki where
the application ran.

2) We can ensure that some standard fields (e.g. bug reporting mechanism,
source code) are present and easily discoverable.

3) We can ensure that basic application metadata is available even if the
application's own website is not.

If we have such standard information in a structured form, we can then also
build new user interfaces if we desire it (for example, you could imagine
clicking on a ChangeTag for "Cool Wikipedia Editor" and it offers you a "report
a bug" link, but that would require knowing what the bug report URL for "Cool
Wikipedia Editor" is).

What I don't like about the current page is that it's not user-friendly and
doesn't include obviously useful information.

I'd suggest, as a minimally problematic first step, cleaning up that page a
bit, and adding at least a tool URL and a description/help URL, and possibly
some of the other fields mentioned in bug 58193. If I'm wrong and linking
directly to either of those URLs is more useful than a localized landing page,
we can always do so later.

This is an interesting feedback comment that came from the Hebrew Wikipedia and
I managed to also replicate in the English Wikipedia.

Steps to replicate:

1. Go to a Sandbox page under a username. For example, this page
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Mooeypoo/Sandbox&veaction=edit

2. Mark one of the words and add an existing page to link to it. For instance,
I marked 'some' and chose the link to "Somerset".

3. Inspect the link while still in VisualEditor - the link is under the user
namespace, so in my example, the link is now
"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Mooeypoo/Somerset";

4. Save the page.

5. After save, the link seems fine (points to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerset as it should).

Steps to reproduce:
1. Unpack 1.22
2. Download an old version of SpecialInterwiki, before it was renamed[see
below]
3. run installer
4. select extensions 'Interwiki' and SpecialInterwiki

The SpecialInterwiki -> Interwiki rename happened 2010-04-17:
https://git.wikimedia.org/commit/mediawiki%2Fextensions%2FInterwiki/3a46e6374ee5426e5dce60280e7c71522a4b31b5
the version before that is needed; Fedora Core's last packaged version of this
extension is '0.11.20080913svn'

Expected result:
The installer detects there are two extensions with the same class
(SpecialInterwiki), and notify the person running the installer.

Actual results:
The installer offers both, and (if selected) they crash the installer.

[Bug 58214] Chinese characters italicized on Wikipedia

> I'd agree with this on a Chinese Wikipedia, however not sure if that would
> help
readers on an English Wikipedia which might not be used to best practices of
writing Chinese.

Yes, I understand your arguments, also I don't have an overview of how
complicated it would be to implement a solution.

However, there's still no reason for the Chinese text to be italicized, since
it makes it unreadable. The Chinese text in the title is there so that an
English reader can use it to identify the title in Chinese if he/she sees it,
not as an exotic decoration. Therefore it's important that it can actually be
read, which I would say is not the case if it is italicized.

It is natural for the editor of English Wikipedia to include also the Chinese
name of the title inside of '':s, since the style manual says that work titles
should be inside of '':s. Therefore it's also logical that such a wikitext will
produce a graphically pleasing result for the reader.

It looks like the OAuth extension applies change tags, but it doesn't register
the ones which are currently in use by approved consumers. As a result, a page
like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Tags will show all OAuth
related tags as "inactive". It would actually be useful to be able to
distinguish between tags set by consumers which are approved (active) and those
which are not.

I used "oldid" in attachment name and descriptions just to make sure people can
easily check those history revisions.

The staled content happened when we fetch rev:125280167, and we simply crawl it
via "http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albanien";. No "oldid" is used.

So it's still same bug I think.

[Bug 57897] Flow: On ee-flow page Sandbox, infinite scroll is broken

2013-12-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=57897

FYI
* The error box from "Older topics" is when the infinite scroll makes an API
request for more stuff from the server within the current page.
* The garbled contents from middle-clicking the Older topics link is when
rendering blows up and MediaWiki sends an incomplete initial page to the
browser without CSS, JS, and navigation elements.

After fiddling around, I found this URL reliably shows the error message after
one pagination:

The last API request fails with the 500 error:

"GET
/w/api.php?action=query&format=json&list=flow&flowpage=Sandbox&flowworkflow=0503c3d2e3d2ad56ca39fa163e68c4ac&flowparams=%7B%22topic_list%22%3A%7B%22offset-dir%22%3A%22fwd%22%2C%22offset-id%22%3A%220505c769ba78b62ef835fa163e68c4ac%22%2C%22limit%22%3A10%2C%22render%22%3Atrue%7D%7D

With that strategy, https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/52169 would be for #2.

2013-12-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58297

As far as separate bugs, I guess it depends on how we break it up. If we do it
all in two commits:

1. Update core styles and class names and the existing uses in core (there
aren't many mw.ui buttons in core, so updating the class names in the HTML is
not complicated)
2. Add mw.ui button classes to the remainder of core.

we should make a separate bug for #2 at some point.

We can reuse https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/52169 , since it's basically
the same thing (albeit started before the new class names were developed).

I suggest we test on Labs (with that changeset checked out), then roll out with
the normal process (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_1.23/Roadmap). We
can set up a new Labs instance if none of the current ones are suitable.

On ee-flow server,
 $ sudo tail -f /var/log/apache2/error.log

Load http://ee-flow.wmflabs.org/wiki/Sandbox and press spacebar or drag
scrollbar to scroll down (and trigger infinite scrolling) Eventually error.log
fills with dozens of these warnings:

[Wed Dec 11 04:42:21 2013] [error] [client 216.38.130.164] PHP Warning:
DOMDocument::loadHTML(): Empty string supplied as input in

The page seems to work OK. This could be related to bug 57897 , though infinite
scroll kept working until my browser got really sluggish.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58308

It doesn't look like the override in InitialiseSettings-labs.php is working
properly. For example, enwikibooks has Wikipedia as the sitename.

There is no explicit entry for Wikibooks and wgSitename, so it should fall back
to the production setting, Wikibooks. Instead, it gives Wikipedia.

The following pages all exist on en.wikipedia.org:

* [[Bird]]
* [[Big]]
* [[Big!]]
* [[Big Ten Conference]]

When querying action=opensearch for:

* "Bir": 0 => "Bird"

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=json&action=opensearch&namespace=0&search=Bir
   [input,["Bird","Birmingham",..]]

* "Bird": 0 => "Bird"

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=json&action=opensearch&namespace=0&search=Bird
   [input,["Bird","BirdLife International",..]]

* "Big":

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=json&action=opensearch&namespace=0&search=Big
   ["Big",["Big Ten Conference","Big band",...]]

* "Big":

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?format=json&action=opensearch&namespace=0&search=Big!
   ["Big!",["Big Ten Conference","Big band",...]]

In the last two, "Big" and "Big!" are nowhere in the response.

Filing against Wikimedia for now, because this seems related to one of our
search backends, not plain MediaWiki core or plain MediaWiki core with
Extension:TitleKey installed.

This is currently causing issues in VisualEditor when making a link to a page
called "Big", or "Big!" as it will think the page doesn't exist and suggest to
make a red link, as, thus far, we've always assumed that if a page by the exact
title exists, it should be the first suggestion.

It normalising casing and/or special characters is fine, but shouldn't make it
not give an exact match as first result.

make changes there so they'll be correct when they go to wikipedia. Should this

I would like to see this feature returned for the following use case.

We disable account creation and use the LdapAuthentication plugin. Along with
this, we use mod_auth_kerb to allow users to login with their Kerberos ticket.
We used to provide a link above the login form to let users login with their
ticket. Now, there is a not a good, clean way to put that link on the login
page.

[Bug 28657] Document setting up search indexer for new wikis

2013-12-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28657

Cool!

- https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Search/New#Current_setup is no longer
correct

- https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Search/New#Administration is it true that
arsenic is still the correct place to run indexing scripts?

- One thing I like to do when writing shell command documentation, is use an
actual $placeholder variable name in instead of . That way
someone can do

  wikiname=wikidata

And copy/paste your commands in exactly.

Nik, this looks really great. The next time you have a task to complete that
is documented here, you should see if you can get me to do it with help mostly
(if not only) from the documentation. That'll help us find any missing parts.

BTW, your documentation thoroughness is inspiring! I shall aspire to match
yours with the analytics documentation soon!

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 58304
Summary: In Beta, opening and closing "This page has some
issues" from the preview overlay causes your edit to
be lost
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: MobileFrontend (Beta)

kw...@wikimedia.org, maxsem.w...@gmail.com,
mgro...@wikimedia.org, mpinc...@wikimedia.org,

Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Steps to reproduce:
1. Log into http://en.m.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/ and switch to Beta mode
2. Go to http://en.m.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/This_page_has_issues and
click the edit button
3. Make an edit and click continue
4. From the preview screen, click on "This page has some issues"
5. Click through the alerts
6. Close the issues overlay by clicking the close button

Expected result: You're back at the preview screen with your previous edit
intact

Actual result: You're back at the preview screen and your edit has been lost

The app is using a really old version of jQuery that gives some deprecated
function warnings in Chrome. It shouldn't bee too hard to upgrade since there
is very little javascript enhancement in the application.

[Bug 58294] Thumbnail rendered with green cast

2013-12-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58294

The full image has a CrystalHS profile as well:

$ identify -verbose
20131208124150\!Ortler_Alpen_Specialkarte_Meurer-Freytag.jpg | grep -A4 icc
Profile-icc: 435696 bytes
  Description: CrystalHS
  Manufacturer: CrystalHS
  Model: CrystalHS
Copyright: Copyright (C) Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG - ScanOpen ICC

So maybe that profile has some error, and the thumbnail generator actually
fixes it?

[Bug 58294] Thumbnail rendered with green cast

--- Comment #1 from Bawolff (Brian Wolff) ---
Traditionally this sort of thing has been caused by embedded color profiles
which are supported in some browsers and not others

[Bug 58259] Use Function rather than $.globalEval to compile cached JavaScript code

So, assuming jQuery did properly scope globalEval, that means V8 has room for
optimisation here and do the same thing to globally-scoped eval() as with e.g.
new Function. V8 is in a nice healthy and quick iteration through Chrome, so be
careful not to optimise for the optimiser, that can and will change. Generally
best to optimise for good patterns, and have engines optimise for good code
naturally.

I'm looking forward to your results from js engines in other browsers.

new Function seems like a cleaner and more direct pattern as well, so I'd argue
its nicer even if it does not always (yet) perform better.

[Bug 58259] Use Function rather than $.globalEval to compile cached JavaScript code

2013-12-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=58259

Note that globalEval doesn't use plain eval(), it uses various tricks to ensure
it is in the neutral and global scope (using the context from the inner
closure, which is bound to the global object).

Whether it optimises or not is a separate question, but if globalEval is
affected by either MediaWiki's or jQuery's closure, that'd be an upstream
jQuery bug. Please make sure that is reported upstream (if not already).

For performance, we can indeed measure both. Make sure though to take into
account that new Function executes in a different way than eval(). The most
significant difference is the returned value (which we don't care about), but
there are other parser context differences that might affect us. Such as
exception handling (we need to know about exceptions so that we can put modules
in the error state).

As long as it is only given single, plain, unwrapped and balanced calls to
mw.loader.implement, it should be fine though.
