[Maniphest] [Commented On] T763: Phabricator far too spammy to continue posting to wikibugs-l

2014-10-25 Thread Qgil
Qgil added a comment.

One problem with this approach is that most probably there will not be projects
only for bugs. Within a projects you will have bugs, development of new
features, and perhaps even other tasks taking time from developers, like
writing documentation of running a tutorial in an event.

If we really want to see only bugs in wikibugs-l, then the only way is to
allow reports and triages to mark bugs as such, with a tag or with a custom
field.

If adding all the activity of projects likely to contain bugs (software
components), then we need to have a list maintained manually. That list could
be maintained in the extension itself. What about a special page (can
extensions have this?) on projects could be added using type-ahead for comfort.

[Bug 72041] Undocumented delete confirmation interface regression

--- Comment #3 from Matthew Flaschen  ---
Alright, so this appearance change is indeed caused by that commit. I believe
it is caused by the part that switches from tables to divs ("Stop using tables
use divs instead. It's the future!")

I see three main options:

1. Keep this appearance and better communicate it. I agree the communication
here was lax, but it's really not that different. I'm not sure, but I think
this layout is also more consistent with the general UI direction.

2. Keep it as divs and use display: table-cell or display: table (I think this
still might require markup change, and it needs to be checked on mobile, but
it's otherwise pretty straightforward). The downside is that it's still
tabular layout, and it's not clear to me we actually want tabular layout here.

3. Go back to table elements, but keep the MW UI styling changes.

I recommend #1.

[Maniphest] [Commented On] T820: Isolate and fix memory leaks in HHVM

2014-10-25 Thread ori
ori added a comment.

I rebuilt libjemalloc1 with `--prof-enabled`:

```
lang=bash
$ apt-get source libjemalloc1
$ cd jemalloc-3.5.1
$ cat >> debian/rules
override_dh_auto_configure:
dh_auto_configure -- --enable-prof
$ dch --distribution trusty-wikimedia --local wmf "Rebuilt with --enable-prof"
$ sudo dpkg-buildpackage -b -uc
```

Then I installed the resultant package on mw1114 and mw1189, the HHVM API
servers. (It's on the API servers that the leak is most evident.)

I then enabled jemalloc's heap profiling capabilities via `/etc/malloc.conf`.
The way to do it is to make that file a symlink whose target is an option
string rather than an actual file. Strange!

```
lang=sh
$ ln -sf "prof:true,prof_gdump:true,lg_prof_sample:21,prof_prefix:/tmp/heaps/
```

  - `prof_gdump` tells jemalloc to dump a memory profile every time the total
virtual memory exceeds the previous maximum.
  - `lg_prof_sample` specifies the average interval (log base 2) between
allocation samples, as measured in bytes of allocation activity. 21 = 2 MiB.
This is granular enough to be useful while keeping the computational overhead
light.
  - `prof_prefix` sets the filename prefix for profile dumps. If unset, dumps
are written to the process's working directory -- in this case `/run/hhvm`.

`prof_gdump` ends up being less useful than I thought. Because virtual memory
usage is steadily increasing, there is a new high water mark every few seconds,
so I end up with a lot of noise.

The next thing I try is to use the admin server API to request a heap profile
every ten minutes.

```
lang=sh
#!/bin/bash
# Request a heap profile from HHVM once every ten minutes.
# Profiles are written to /tmp/heaps.
sudo -u apache -g apache mkdir -m0755 -p /tmp/heaps
curl "localhost:9002/jemalloc-prof-activate"
for (( i=1; ; i++ )); do
curl "localhost:9002/jemalloc-prof-dump?file=/tmp/heaps/${i}.heap"
sleep 600
done
```

My plan is to use pprof's `--base` arg to subtract a heap profile from its
successor. The basic invocation looks like this:

```
$ google-pprof `which hhvm` --show_bytes --base=1.heap 2.heap
```

This puts you in interactive mode. You can run 'top' to see the top 10
routines, etc.

I hack together a simple shell script to help:

```
lang=sh
#!/bin/bash
for (( i=1; ; i++ )); do
base="$((i)).heap" prof="$((i+1)).heap"
[ -e "$prof" ] || break
echo " $base => $prof "
google-pprof `which hhvm` --show_bytes --text --base="$base" "$prof"
2>/dev/null | head -6
done
```

Here's the output for an hour's worth of heap profiles:

Working with XML could be the most common, memory-intensive things the API
servers do, so the regular appearance of `xmlNewText` in these lists //could//
be innocent, but it looks suspicious to me.

I'm out of time for now, but the next thing I plan to set a breakpoint on
`xmlNewText` in gdb and capture some backtraces.

OK. thanks for clarifying; it makes more sense now, but still doesnt explain
how it might take 10 mins to fetch 3 namespace 0 edits in enwp.

One way to avoid the problem is to add a timeout to RepeatingGenerator, so the
caller can prevent it from locking up forever if new data doesnt arrive.

This is wrong. RepeatingGenerator will ask the RC feed for the latest edit in
the past (to be an indicator of "present") and three more edits in the future.
Thus, it might not return an instant result for some sites. For English
Wikipedia, however, it should return an instant result.

You're right; the test is supposed to be running against the site
en.wikipedia.org, but a bug somewhere in pywikibot could mean that doesnt
happen.

I find it hard to believe that en.wp doesnt have four namespace 0 edits on
recentchanges for 10 minutes. In fact, 10 mins shouldnt even be required. If
I understand correctly, this test is essentially asking the RC feed for four
namespace 0 edits, any time in the past. This should always be an instant
result.

I reverted the config.yaml move and the bot is now connected to freenode and
seems stable. The stream seems broken, though.

[Bug 72523] New: grrrit-wm down and broken

2014-10-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=72523

Bug ID: 72523
   Summary: grrrit-wm down and broken
   Product: Tool Labs tools
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: [other]
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: legoktm.wikipe...@gmail.com
CC: pirsquare...@gmail.com, yuvipa...@gmail.com
   Web browser: ---
   Mobile Platform: ---

Email I sent to Yuvi:

tl;dr: grrrit-wm is broken right now, it's not relying messages, and
when we try and attempt to kill it with qdel, it goes into some error
state and keeps connecting/quitting.

huh (PiRSquared) thinks he broke it when quieting it in another channel,
it was down for a while before I came online. He asked if he could
upgrade the irc node module it was using, so I said sure since he
already had access...that didn't work, so he reverted it, but it's still
not working.

I logged into gerrit-to-redis, and based on the log messages it appears
to be working fine (I also restarted it just in case, and it was working
fine after the restart)

So yeah...halp?

 is
our log trying to figure stuff out.

---

Second email:

To stop spam, we moved the config.yaml to "config_moved-cuz-bug" so it
would stop joining. It also finally died from qstat.

At this point I'm not going to touch it until you or someone else has
time to debug it...

Bug ID: 72521
   Summary: Edit preview doesn't work for JS and CSS pages

Status: NEW

If you use the Wikitext editor to edit a JS or CSS page on mobile, it throws
the following Javascript error: "resp.parse.sections[0] is undefined"

Apparently our previewing code assumes that the API always returns sections for
pages (which JS and CSS pages don't have).

Of course Wikimedia updates its packages almost never, so it probably won't
make it to WMF servers for about seven years.

overkill. A more lightweight editor would be nice to have in Phabricator so

TASK DESCRIPTION
  When I go to T43, it reads `75 older changes are hidden. Show all changes.`.
This makes in-browser find difficult and requires me to click a link in order
to see the full task. We should either make this comment hiding/collapsing
configurable per-user or simply disable it across the site. Hiding/collapsing
comments directly hinders and harms user-to-user communication and results in
wasted time as people make duplicative comments.

I met and discussed with people from Wikieducator yesterday/today and how they
can collaborate with us. Interaction with student from Punjab University was
useful too (he has mw extension for BRL CAD project).

On other useful side:
* Met Apertium upstream and had brief discussion on how we increase
collaboration with each other. We already doing good here (See notes from Alex

* Lots of discussion with students from everywhere.

[Maniphest] [Created] T911: Phabricator project display names use awkward capitalization and hyphenation

2014-10-25 Thread MZMcBride
MZMcBride created this task.
MZMcBride added subscribers: MZMcBride, Qgil, QuimGil.
MZMcBride added a project: Phabricator.
MZMcBride changed Security from none to none.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Splitting this off from T43.

  Currently Phabricator project display names are awkwardly using
capitalization and hyphenation. For example, "Bugzilla-Migration" should be
"Bugzilla migration". I boldly fixed this project name, but apparently that
caused issues. T910 was filed about links breaking due to project renames. What
other issues are there to address before we can fix project names?

  Quim mentions project name guidelines, though Phabricator opened to the
public
[[https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2014-October/078939.html |
less than a month ago]], so I'm not sure how there would be appropriate
guidelines in this area already.

[Maniphest] [Created] T910: Renaming Phabricator project breaks links (doesn't create redirects)

2014-10-25 Thread MZMcBride
MZMcBride created this task.
MZMcBride added subscribers: MZMcBride, chasemp.
MZMcBride changed Security from none to none.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  According to T43#15315, renaming a Phabricator project breaks links because
Phabricator doesn't create redirects. Phabricator should probably support
graceful renames (leaving behind a redirect and not breaking links), similar to
how MediaWiki behaves.

[Maniphest] [Commented On] T857: Imported bugs from bugzilla should be assigned the same number as their bugzilla ID (i.e. Bug 1 -> Task 1; Bug 2007 -> Task 2007)

2014-10-25 Thread MZMcBride
MZMcBride added a comment.

Re-numbering Phabricator tasks seems needlessly painful.

I kind of assumed that bug 1 would map to whichever task number was next
available at time of import and that every subsequent imported Bugzilla bug
would get the next available task number sequentially (e.g., bug 1 --> task
982, bug 10 --> task 991, etc.). A sequential import allows for a much easier
translation between the two systems (in this example scenario, you'd simply add
or subtract 981).

But even a non-sequential import is probably fine as long as the user is
properly redirected. The issue here is that we cannot break links. Whether bug
1 maps to task 1 or task 982 doesn't really matter to me, personally.

[Maniphest] [Created] T908: Phabricator doesn't prompt for duplicate tasks when creating a task

2014-10-25 Thread MZMcBride
MZMcBride created this task.
MZMcBride added a subscriber: MZMcBride.
MZMcBride changed Security from none to none.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Bugzilla had a neat feature intended to reduce duplicate bugs: when a user
was creating a bug, Bugzilla would use AJAX search to take the bug summary and
search through other open bugs that seemed similar. Bugzilla would present
seemingly duplicate bugs to the user in a list, theoretically reducing the
number of duplicate bugs filed.

  Phabricator doesn't seem to make any effort to avoid duplicate tasks and it
would probably be a good idea if it did.

No, linking directly to comments is just too hard, because Phabricator doesn't

[Bug 72517] user tracking opt-in rather than opt-out

Dan Garry  changed:

--- Comment #1 from Dan Garry  ---
The data we collect is absolutely instrumental is helping us make the app a
better product. It lets us see what features are working well and what features
aren't. It's helped us make the app as good as it is now, and it's helping us
make it even better. I cannot, in good conscience, deny the team access to this
data, because it's how we understand what we're doing well at and, more
important, what we're not doing well at.

That said, I hear where you're coming from. Privacy is important. That's why we
built the opt-out in the first place. There are many products deployed today on
the Wikimedia cluster that collect data and don't even have such opt-outs. I'm
proud that this product does. :-)

If you're particularly privacy conscious, I'd simply recommend opting out.

Google Code-in agenda will be posted on Monday! Two weeks to apply (Nov 10),
and then organizations announced a couple of days later. 12 orgs this year (was
10).

Coding starts on December 1. Monday after Thanksgiving holidays. 7 weeks.

New: there will be a tag to define absolute beginner tasks. Because they found
out that a big % of registered participants don't even dared to commit to a
first task.

New: Quick overview to IRC (found to be a common problem among students),
version control, being part of the community, quality over quantity. Seriously:
quality over quantity, this is something that everybody needs to understand.

By the way, this is where the unconference schedule is posted:
https://sites.google.com/site/gsocmentorsummitstudentreunion/weekend-sessions-schedule

Two sessions were merged, and I was there:

* Global demographics of Open Source

[Maniphest] [Created] T903: "MediaWiki Userpage: Unknown" on Phabricator user profiles is tacky

TASK DESCRIPTION
  At  it currently reads
"MediaWiki Userpage: Unknown". I find this a bit tacky. Can't it just output
nothing instead? Or even better would be if Phabricator allowed me to set the
user page... can't find an option for that.

  The time zone drop-down menu in Phabricator uses underscores in its entries.
For example, I see "America/New_York" at

This looks goofy.

[Bug 72465] Deploy WikiGrok extension to test, test2, and en.wiki

--- Comment #8 from Greg Grossmeier  ---
Security review is still needed pre-prod deploy. Ori/Aaron just decided
yesterday to suspend pre-deploy performance reviews.

Max: please file a bug for Chris for his review and assign it to him.

[Maniphest] [Commented On] T763: Phabricator far too spammy to continue posting to wikibugs-l

2014-10-25 Thread chasemp

What if we made an extension that added the list for any project with the
bug symbol? Could have a generic one 'bug' but then then it allows better
taxonomy. Unless there is a better use for the bug symbol.
