[Maniphest] [Commented On] T694: Print URL, Version, etc only when they contain data
chasemp added a comment. In regards to the principle of progressive disclosure, this not a phabricator or migration issue. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68559 looks like this: {F420} phabricator looks like {F422} Bugzilla chooses to display fields that have no set value, I assume because an unset field is not the same thing as //no data//. The current approach is the least surprise approach as it most closely preserves the set of data, set and unset, in the original bug report. Not liking it is fine, not wanting it shown on issues people are actively working on where the value of this data can be examined is fine. It can be removed from any description, but the default migrated description would be missing valuable context without it. [Maniphest] [Changed CC] T823: Process to request a private project
chasemp added a subscriber: chasemp. chasemp added a comment. This is a little confused. Private projects do not necessarily equal private tasks. Projects can be hidden and can be restrictive, but associating that tag with a task has no security effects. The security of a ticket itself is independent of the projects. That is why we developed the 'Security' drop down and extension to allow people to file tasks and have their settings be restrictive/secure-filing friendly. I am guessing the 'spaces' stuff upstream will address this. I also think we should pursue a "per person default task permissions" setting since my guess is people file tasks they want seen by the same people 99% of the time. But in general private projects have little to do with private tasks other than a project can be a people container which can be used on a task ACL. [Maniphest] [Changed CC] T771: Experiment with Phabricator workboards
chasemp added subscribers: Halfak, chasemp. chasemp added a comment. @halfak -- hey dude, my understanding is we asked people not to use the official prod instance as an "I'm learning phab" testing bed as it clutters up the search namespace and creates a lot of noise / churn for notifications. The phab-01 instance was designated for the, can phab do this? exploring. So I think @qgil isn't really trying to police you, more like ask you politely to create tasks for exploration that are not actual production tasks elsewhere. [Maniphest] [Changed CC] T716: security extension doesn't need to strip out projects of newly created tickets (only add security)

So it totally makes sense I think. The tags themselves in no way are associated w/ the security settings. Adding a project doesn't affect the view/edit policy settings at all. Right now when we create a new security-bug we are stripping out all tags but security (which is a group), but if am in #MYGROUP and #MYGROUP is added to a security task (that is hidden from me) as a project. I do not automatically get to view that task. The work for T475 should create a custom ACL that is essentially SECURITY+Author for each newly filed security task. It shouldn't have anything more to do w/ any other projects associated to a task at creation time than that. I don't see this quote "members of projects the task is part of" anywhere but it is wrong and wouldn't have made any sense prior to this T716 as no other projects have been allowed. [Maniphest] [Commented On] T607: Check easily who has signed Legalpad documents by their Wikimedia username
chasemp added a comment. @Jalexander, really I think you have explained yourself well, but their has been a meager amount of time on our side to address it and translate into the best possible technical terms. I'm genuinely sorry that has sucked. I think the last few comments here have been good. In my mind, saying the solution is a certain identifier in the list is a skip-to-the-end conclusion, but in restating the problem as "we need to know who signed a certain legalpad" I hope it can be handled in more flexible and still amendable ways. Really my fear is delivering something we aren't prepared to sustain. @mmodell, Could we do something as simple as a url that is just a list of signee's by wiki name as an extension? Not even bothering with UI fanciness. I'm not trying to be ignorant but for me the need isn't wiki names in //the// list, it's a list of wiki names with signatures. Which we may better serve in another context. On the separate app, maybe take a look at how the burndown chat was built? https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T153 https://github.com/bluehawk/phabricator-sprint That's some pretty advanced stuff all done in a way that is really thoughtful. I'm really not trying to be the grinch on this. TASK DETAIL https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T607 REPLY HANDLER ACTIONS Reply to comment or attach files, or !close, !claim, !unsubscribe or !assign . [Maniphest] [Commented On] T572: Determine the fate of comment metadata from legacy systems in phabricator.wikimedia.org
chasemp added a comment. Not meant exactly as a direct response to @faidon, he just hit the three big-ish options on the nose, though there are variations of them. > * migrate accounts off Bugzilla/RT as-is (email as the username for > Bugzilla) > * prompt users to just recover/rename their account if they wish so > * migrate comments as they are, owned by their correct owner and with the > correct timestamp The history surrounding these options is spread out over hundreds of tickets so I'm going to try to hit some highlights to kind of bring this comment narrative together I hope. We all know bugzilla uses emails as usernames, but bugzilla also does some responsible stuff. If you go to a bugzilla ticket without authentication you see: {F210} They are smart enough not to leak emails to anonymous crawling, etc. But phabricator isn't setup to handle the emails as username use case. We know that we want maniphest to be search engine friendly, and indeed I think a few of us have found our own issues already while searching for phabricator related things. Andre explained to us that one of the biggest points of contention with the community is the problem of bugzilla being cavalier with user emails. Users will/have/do actively refuse to sign up and report bugs because they don't want to their emails broadcast (which I'm not saying is reasonable necessarily -- just true), and the ones that have signed up are not happy with it either. The idea of using emails as usernames is just an unsellable, undefendable, unworkable solution from this perspective. Or at least after lots of discussion related to this, we all thought it would tank the project from the beginning for community support. So what about some derivative or some generated username or something like their anonymous user id from bugzilla? There are a lot of social problems with that, but chief among them is that a static comment that shows the old username (as it was shown in the anonymous bugzilla sense) and text is more desirable than a "real" username that no one knows and a comment that has lost the context of the original user. So the idea of noise usernames from old systems seems good at first, and then when you do it there is a lot missing. Looking through a few hundred of the first tickets in that mode leaves you thinking, who is this? is this a wmf person? We could do "1234-WMF" for old WMF accounts and "123" for old non-WMF accounts, but it gets super messy and not at all better than a static comment that is at least straight forward. There is no one yet who we have had to explain what a static comment is, or how it works. It's an obvious ploy for metadata migration. There is no guarantee that many of the people from bugzilla, or rt, or any other system we import will ever show up again and so it may never be fixed from this perspective. We could do something in the middle, use the "generic" name bugzilla uses which is just the "foo" part of "f...@bar.com", but bugzilla doesn't worry much about overlap or identity. The j...@cake.com and j...@waffles.com issue. Then there is the problem of usernames and alias management in phabricator. Renaming users, or trying to merge accounts, especially ones that may be claimed a year or two years from now is problematic. If you attempt to change your username in Phabricator the first part of the prompt warning is this: >The old username will no longer be tied to the user, so anything which uses it >(like old commit >messages) will no longer associate correctly. (And, if you >give a user a username which some other user used to have, username lookups >will begin returning the wrong user.) The long story short there is, we import g...@goo.com as goo, and let's say there is no name conflict with the name from rt or trello or mingle or whatever other system we are going to migrate from next. It's doubtful that goo wants goo to be their username in phab, it seems few actually do want their username to be the first part of whatever email they were using. But goo doesn't show back up for another year, however their comments and their work has been referenced a bunch of times, when they come back and claim their account (however that is done) they immediately want to change their identity as they didn't actually choose the one we assigned. We lose necessary history in phabricator for their account from the point of migration to the point of claim. When we looked at doing this across the many, many, many accounts from bugzilla it was not a username shuffle game that seemed sane to get into. It gets weirder as this huge swath of account names we have taken up are chosen by actual users later and the history of who is really who becomes problematic. The other outcome that
[Maniphest] [Changed CC] T607: Check easily who has signed Legalpad documents by their Wikimedia username
chasemp added a subscriber: chasemp. chasemp added a comment. What has to happen is to sit down and figure out how it will be used. I know Jalexander in particular has spent quite a bit of time outlining what they need, which is great, and in some general terms why. The missing link here is how this will be used. An example is, when this was all first presented I think all of the technical folks assumed that those using legalpad would come looking for a specific person they needed to verify had signed something. I think the actual flow is turning out to be more discovery of users in a general sense with signatures, and less of a "I know this person has said they signed but I need to check". These are really different work flows that we can handle with different compromises in the UI. @mmodell's patch is really about throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks because no one on our side understands how the product is used. That patch could be a PITA to manage in an ongoing sense. Something we have seen happen is upstream has really tried //not// to focus their support time on products that are "beta", and they have even renamed all of them as "prototypes" and made this somewhat clear in the channels. If we can find a workflow that does not involve hacking up the UI and doing heavy handed things that will cause us pain every time we have to merge upstream (which will be very often) it will be much more supportable. That could mean a separate phab app, which may be more work up front but leaves us in a good place for weekly or months merges. It may mean a separate web interface outside of the normal phab one that can be used to run queries against the DB without incurring the costs we are looking at now. Delivering something we are not going to be able to actively support well, or that is going to constantly require break-fix energy isn't going to allow us to be very good stewards of this use-case in the most basic senses.
