Re: [Wikidata] Serialization issues from Wikidata to SPARQL triple store

2016-07-13 Thread Stas Malyshev
Hi!

> Could you maybe give us more info on the status of this issue and if
> we could do something to help alleviating it?

I think the best way if you discover this issue to tell me (by leaving a
note on https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User_talk:Smalyshev_(WMF) or by
filing an issue in Phabricator and tagging it with
wikidata-query-service), specifying:
- Affected ID
- Specific property that is wrong and which values are missing (test
case queries welcome too :)
- When the property was updated, if known (sometimes I can see it in
history but bot updates are often massive and hard to search)

It's even better if you could hold off updating the item for a little
bit (I'd usually be able to look into it within a day or two, and then
update it), since after it's updated it's be hard for me to know which
of the servers had wrong data, and research why it happened. Preserving
the error state for a bit enables me to research in more details.

Mostly unrelated to this, there might be still some deleted items
lurking around in the DB, since the deletion problem we had about a
month ago. If you notice any, please tell me. Eventually I'll do the DB
reload to sync them all, but that may take some time due to some other
issues, so for now just please tell me about them.

Thanks,

 There is a new *Drag'n'drop gadget* available in Wikidata >
 Preferences > Gadgets

 https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets

 * Drag'n'drop*: Add statements and references from Wikidata or
 Wikipedia by dragging and dropping them.

 Please note that there are issues with the gadget.

 I would like to evangelize this gadget but for my purposes it is not
 functioning
 ---> i.e., I drag the reference and get a shadow image of text and
 even after waiting 5 minutes the reference does not apply; refresh clears
 the attempted addition

 It might be a browser issue, but I have tried it on both Mac and PC, as
 well as on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and SeaMonkey with exactly the same
 unsuccessful results. I have talked with Magnus about this (he is not
 having the problems I have had). It might also be a Wikidata response
 issue, but I think that issue was resolved.

 Currently if you use Wiki Markup and want to use one of the four Cite
 templates via the RefToolbar these templates I don't think will transfer
 - Cite books: not configured. Will get error message
 - I have not tested Cite web, Cite journal, Cite news, but assume none
 of these are configured to be captured by this tool.

 Obviously to configure the tool to work with these RefToolbar citation
 templates would be significant amount of time & effort.

 But if this tool was fully functional and robust -- and was able to
 transfer ALL of the piped data -- it would allow for a great
 interoperability of citations between Wikipedia and Wikidata.

 I don't build citations without using templates, as my assumption is
 that templates are more machine readable and more useful -- and are more
 consistent -- but obviously others are using different approaches. I assume
 bare urls are probably the most transferrable. But those didn't work for me
 either, so.

 I really appreciate the fact that this gadget is available and the hard
 work it took to create it. Magnus has been very patient and kind offlist
 trying to problem-solve the issues I have had.

 I just wanted to follow up and provide this information, as it seems an
 important tool for us citation-focused editors.

 Best,

 - Erika

[Wikidata] Serialization issues from Wikidata to SPARQL triple store

2016-07-13 Thread Sebastian Burgstaller
Hi all!

First of all, let me say that we all love the SPARQL endpoint, it's a
great service and it has become essential to how we interact with
Wikidata and run our bots. Great job by Stas and others!

I am also aware that it is still in beta mode. There is just one
issue, which plagues us and I have filed a bug report regarding that
in Sep 2015 (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T112397), so the issue
got alleviated, but it turned out that it did not get fully resolved:

-Occassionally, data written to an item in Wikidata via the API does
not make it into the triple store. (Frequency of the issue is hard to
determine)
-It is a crucial issue because it can lead to data inconsistency by
creating duplicate items or incorrect properties/values on items.
-It seems to happen while the SPARQL endpoint is under high load (just
my impression)

How data is affected:
-New data does not make it into the triple store
-Updates to and merges of items do not make it to the triple store, so
'ghost items' are returned which have actually been merged or queries
show/miss resutls/items incorreclty because freshly added/deleted data
has not been completely serialized.

Example: item https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q416356, a protein,
recently got added protein domains via the 'has part' property. This
did not show up in SPARQL queries and a DESCRIBE query for that item
returned that these triples were not there indeed. (item has been
modified, so it is fine now.)

A solution seems to be to modify the item as this seems to trigger
re-serialization. But this is certainly not practical for larger
imports. Furthermore, as long as such an item does not get modified,
data could be missing/ghosting from/in the triple store for weeks or
even months. And it turns out to be quite difficult to determine how
much of a certain import effort finally made it into the triple store,
if you do not want to iterate through all items modified and check if
everything is in the triple store, which would take significant
amounts of time.

Could you maybe give us more info on the status of this issue and if
we could do something to help alleviating it?

Thank you!

Sebastian

Re: [Wikidata] Drag'n'drop Gadget functionality issues

2016-07-13 Thread Magnus Manske
Hi all,

I have tried to replicate the issue in FIrefox, Chrome, and Safari. It
appears to work for me, bowever, API calls occasionally took a signisicant
amount of time. This was the case for a few minutes, and then "fixed"
itself. So some of the described effect might be due to "Wikidata weather".

If anyone else has issues with this gadget, please report them to me,
ideally with detailed "story" (action performed, browser, item, etc.) I
need to be able to reproduce the issue reliably to fix any problems that
may be in the code.

Also, if you know JavaScript, please have a look and help improve the
gadget for more and better reference import. (You can also drag Commons
images, coodrinates, and Wikipedia links as new statements!).

Cheers,
Magnus

Here's the code I currently have:
```
if ($("table.wb-globe-details").length) {
$('head').append( $('').attr('href', 'https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/leaflet/0.7.3/leaflet.css') );
$.getScript("https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/leaflet/0.7.3/leaflet.js", function () {
$("table.wb-globe-details").each(function (i) {
$(this).find("tbody").append("");
var lat = $(this).find("td.wb-globe-latitude").text();
var lon = $(this).find("td.wb-globe-longitude").text();
var map = L.map('mapmapmap'+i).setView([lat, lon], 13);
L.tileLayer('http://{s}.tile.osm.org/{z}/{x}/{y}.png', {
maxZoom: 18
}).addTo(map);
var marker = L.marker([lat, lon]).addTo(map);
});
});
I did not find anything like that in
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:List_of_properties/all#Generic
Properties matching "service"
https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search=500=0=default=Property%3Aservice
Properties matching "offer"
https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search=500=0=default=Property%3Aoffer
And I'm not sure I understand how properties are classified (i.e. what makes
them show up in https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:List_of_properties/all)
I guess it's when a property is an instance of a subclass of Wikidata property
(https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18616576 ) such as "Wikidata property for items
about organizations" https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18608993 and a bot takes
the last part of the property name to be the category ?
[Wikidata] Wikidata property for items about software
2016-07-13 Thread Loic Dachary
Hi,
I created "Wikidata property for items about software"
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q25857383 modeled after "Wikidata property for
items about works" https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18618644. It is my
understanding that it will automagically display all properties that are an
instance of "Wikidata property for items about software" in the "Software" part
(which does not exist yet) of
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:List_of_properties/all
There also is an existing "Wikidata property for software"
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q21126229 which seems identical but worded
slightly differently. I realize creating a new item with an identical purpose
was a mistake but I don't know how to remove this new item. And I don't
understand why properties that are instance of "Wikidata property for software"
do not show in https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:List_of_properties/all.
I would very much appreciate any advice you may have on this topic :-)
Cheers
2016-07-13 Thread Jhernandez
Jhernandez added a comment.
Regarding:
A new configuration variable for surveys for the operator code to facilitate such a survey
Surveys are tied to configuration changes to the QuickSurveys extension that are deployed by engineering personel.
It doesn't seem like a good idea that operators all around the world will be sending us surveys and configuration changes that will need to be modified and deployed by engineers.
Besides that, technically:
Does ZeroBanner _javascript_ provide sufficient context to the browser to make it possible to identify that the survey's operator code matches that of the operator?
After researching, it doesn't seem like it. No config variables seem to be sent to the client (1) from what I've been looking at.
They could probably be exposed, if it was really necessary, or checked on the server and only send the relevant surveys to the client. Tying QuickSurveys to explicitly depend on ZeroBanner doens't seem like a good idea technically though.
I'd estimate this to be an 8 pointer if we really wanted to work on it. Maybe more (it may take some time to come up with a reasonable approach).
How would sampling and eligibility work to ensure that a large percentage of ResourceLoader capable UAs on a given zero-rated network would be presented with the survey, but repeated survey presentation would be avoided?
I don't see what the issue would be here, normal QuickSurvey bucketing and selection mechanisms apply. Any thoughts on why this could be problematic @dr0ptp4kt?TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T137151EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: JhernandezCc: bmansurov, atgo, DFoy, Lydia_Pintscher, Aklapper, dr0ptp4kt, Zppix, Winter, D3r1ck01, Izno, Luke081515, Wikidata-bugs, aude, jayvdb, Yurik, jhobs, Mbch331___
Regarding:
A new configuration variable for surveys for a number of edits threshold upon which a user would become eligible for a survey.
Estimated2 points
Tasks
Add config variable for edit buckets (validate values)
All if not defined
Or an array of bucket names:
Bucket nameEdits
00 or not defined
1-41 ≤ edits ≤ 4
5-995 ≤ edits ≤ 99
100-999100 ≤ edits ≤ 999
1000+edits ≥ 1000
Account for the new variable in the frontend code that decides showing the survey matching it with the current user's bucket (example getting current user's bucket)
Regarding the related question 3:
How would sampling and eligibility work to ensure that a large percentage of editors exceeding a particular number of edits threshold would be presented with the survey, but repeated survey presentation would be avoided?
Quicksurveys handles bucketing percentages so you can choose which percentage of users matching the criteria will see the survey with a config variable.
Regarding repeated survey presentation, QuickSurveys remembers if the user has dismissed or answered a survey per browser session and won't show it again to that user.
That said, and given we're talking about logged in users w/ edits, if they login in a different browser, then they'll be bucketed again and they may see the same survey again on a different device.
That's how it is implemented right now, and syncing user buckets across devices would be non-trivial (could probably be done via user prefs though).TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T137151EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: JhernandezCc: bmansurov, atgo, DFoy, Lydia_Pintscher, Aklapper, dr0ptp4kt, Zppix, Winter, D3r1ck01, Izno, Luke081515, Wikidata-bugs, aude, jayvdb, Yurik, jhobs, Mbch331___
[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T140027: Make extracting tags possible from rendered template of the example
2016-07-13 Thread Jonas
Jonas added a comment.
From my experience a lot of people fail on using templates or wikitext when trying to add an example query.
I think when people are able to save examples from the gui just a few will create them manually.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T140027EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: JonasCc: Aklapper, Zppix, Smalyshev, Avner, debt, Gehel, D3r1ck01, Jonas, FloNight, Xmlizer, Izno, jkroll, Wikidata-bugs, Jdouglas, aude, Deskana, Manybubbles, Mbch331___
[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T138748: [Solution] Value checking and saving: Error messages, no silent fails
2016-07-13 Thread Jan_Dittrich
@daniel :
on "Errors that do not correspond to a single input field": that seems manageable. We would need to find an alternative location for the error and maybe convey that it will not be checked live. This is best determined  in a user test anyway.
on the suggestion: Yes that makes sense to me. I can't estimate how this all will play together (so infos for the save button will take a different path than the info for the fields?).
also on the suggestion: It would make sense to display failures in such a place. Semantically it would make sense if the preview and the error message data are easy to tell apart technically on the client side (come in different JSON-properties or so)
does this mean that is easy to find out which type of message was received (as frontened) and that triggering the collapsed vs. expanded based on this (or anything else) it not a problem?TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T54843EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Jan_DittrichCc: Charlie_WMDE, Jan_Dittrich, Jonas, Wikidata-bugs, thiemowmde, adrianheine, Snaterlicious, Lydia_Pintscher, daniel, JohnLewis, D3r1ck01, Izno, aude, TheDJ, Mbch331___
