Re: [Wikidata] Federation in the Wikidata Query Service

2017-04-01 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
What I fail to understand in this discussion about licenses is what it is
we achieve by being restrictive.

Our license is CC-0 so anybody can do with our data as they please. When we
allow query with any and all external sources, there are activities that
may not be possible because of a license. What are they?

When people link Wikidata and compare values, finding a difference is imho
not licensed because it is original research.
When people link Wikidata and add Wikidata statements elsewhere, it is
allowed because of our license.
When people link Wikidata and add items or statements to Wikidata only then
there is a reason to respect the license of the external source and
disallow it. I can imagine that we disallow update statements in Wikidata
based on the license of the external Source.

For all other objectives it is the user who is responsible for his actions.
Not allowing this is imho contrary to our motto: "sharing in the sum of all
knowledge".
Thanks,
  GerardM

ODBL seems to be in the same vein as CC-BY-SA, so if CC-BY is ok, that

Great new feature you have here! I would only add endpoints that use
free licenses that are compatible with our terms of use (
https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Terms_of_Use#7._Licensing_of_Content
). See http://freedomdefined.org/Definition for a more general

We don't control that service. By default, Virtuoso Open Source Edition
SPARQL endpoints are typically CC-BY-SA.

I understand the reason for CC-BY in DBpedia, and it looks like adding
it to the license/copyright/acknowledgment page should be enough.
I planned from the start to launch it with small number of endpoints and
then extend it. I plan to see how it fares and if there's not anything
wrong that we've missed (doesn't look like it so far, which is good) and
add next batch next week - which means it would be deployed in April
10th deployment window (we deploy WDQS stuff on Mondays usually).

Right now it's
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:SPARQL_federation_input. After
we're done with CC-By ones, I'll probably clean up that page a bit and

Frankly, I am not sure what to do with this. The ND part is kind of
concerning, and I'm not a lawyer so I am not even sure I understand it
properly. While it looks like the "BY" part can be satisfied with
https://query.wikidata.org/copyright.html type page, the ND part still
remains and I'm not sure how to deal with it. The letter answer is great
and I am thankful for it, but what I am concerned about is how to make
it the matter of record - in 5 years, maybe both myself and person who
wrote this letter would forget about it, and the system still needs to
be maintained. So if there were some statement on official UniProt docs
that says this case is OK (within some kind of FAQ probably? Maybe
http://www.uniprot.org/help/license ) or somehow a way to make an
official permission (some kind of letter to le...@wikimedia.org? I don't
know, I don't have much experience with this) that would make it much
easier.

Hi Stas,

Can I assume the brief waiver by the UniProt PI to not be sufficient for
allowing even the federated use in WikiData of sparql.uniprot.org. If
that assumption is correct I will restart the long UniProt internal

Hello,

We've been working on integrating some external databases in the Query
Service endpoint. You can now query in the same time Wikidata and other
free knowledge bases. For now, only databases released under the most
compatible licenses, such as CC0, are available. Currently available:

* Europeana[1], the huge collection of cultural data, which is entirely
available in public domain.
* Nomisma.org[2], a collaborative project to provide stable digital
representations of numismatic concepts.
* Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes [3]
* Biblioteca Nacional de España [4]

Soon, we plan to also enable querying other databases, with licenses
such as CC-BY. We plan to continue add endpoints based on user requests.

The currently available endpoints are listed here:
https://query.wikidata.org/copyright.html

The documentation about the feature (which will also be updated when we
add more endpoints) is in the Query Service User Manual [5].

Here are some examples to understand how to build such queries:

Re: [Wikidata] Federation in the Wikidata Query Service

2017-03-30 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
Would it be possible to include DBpedia as a matter of urgency. They added
the cc-by-sa because at that time wisdom was to have the same license as
Wikipedia to prevent upset people. Given the strong relation between what
we do in our projects and what they do in theirs it is easy to come up with
user scenarios that will benefit both our projects.
Thanks,
 GerardM

[Wikidata] Federation in the Wikidata Query Service

2017-03-30 Thread Stas Malyshev

Thanks a lot for your input! If you have any question or problem, feel
free to contact me.
