It's relatively easy to show random language, what is still sounding questionable to me is that if you want French label and there's none, showing Chinese one would be useful for you. Also note, that having "any" means it would not be stable (since stable order requires some rule) so it means once label can be Chinese, another time Russian, another time Farsi - for the same query. Gehel added subscribers: ema, BBlack.Gehel added a comment. For some more context: LDF is a way to cheaply get large lists of triples from WDQS, and displace some logic on the clients. Retrieving this list is done page by page. We already have use cases for this. The iteration order is just following the underlying index, which might be different on each node. So specific pages on returned by different nodes might have different content. Adding a sorting step would allow the order to be consistent between nodes, but would increase the cost enough that it breaks the main point of LDF (cheaply retrieve a list of triples). Potential solutions: client affinity The same client always ending up on the same WDQS node would ensure that this client will get a consistent ordering. That consistent ordering would get cached at varnish level and provide a consistent answer to the next client. This breaks down if there is a refresh by another client doing the same query at the time of invalidation. LVS is able to do source hashing scheduling (see LVS docs or T151971), but in our case the source IP is Varnish. We could remove the LVS in front of WDQS and use Varnish to do balancing, but this is exactly the opposite of the current effort to standardise all our services on the same model. single LDF server We can route all LDF requests to a single server, with a fallback mechanism to route traffic to another server in case the first one is down. This is a not scalable option. And we don't have anything in place (AFAIK) to manage an automatic fallback (it does not look like LVS has a scheduler that would work in this scenario). make any WDQS node return consistent pages As stated above, sorting results before paging would solve the issue, but is probably too expensive to consider (result sets are expected to be large). The LDF implementation that we use does not seem to support this. It might be possible to configure a different indexing strategy, with consistent iteration order, but that's an unknown. Basically WDQS is stateless (as seen from a client) but accidentally exposes internal state in a subtle way. If we throw a check in maxlag value calculation checking for the number of JobQueue entries and then raising the maxlag to indicate it, it would prevent bots from causing this issue again. While it is OK to change those values (obvious case being fixing a mistake), we consider language and lexical category to be required parts of the Lexeme entity. Without those Lexeme is incomplete. Therefore users should not be allowed to remove those values from existing entities. When it comes to implementation this should probably be done in respective ChangeOpDeserializer that should refuse to set language/lexical category to an empty value (null etc). Such attempt should result in a relevant error message returned by the API (ie. TASK DESCRIPTIONAs suggested in T159718 a column storing the full entity ID (i.e. its string form, not just a numeric part) should be added to wb_terms table. https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/341322 is a draft of the patch adding column like the one considered here. That patch has been only introduced to illustrate the intent. While actually working on this it could either a separate patch (or patches), or that patch might be taken over and changed to the needed form. https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/341322 should not be considered something to follow. Note that in T159718 DBAs suggested to introduce indexes including the new column at the point when the column is added. I.e. unlike @WMDE-leszek initially considered T159718, or it was proposed in the plan in T114903. This decision should be considered here. Goal: when viewing an item, to be able to quickly copy Pnnn and Qnnn values of any statement. If the precision of the geo-coordinate is too low, this causes digits to be removed from the coordinates as originally entered. Example: the coordinate is entered as 36.1234N 17.567W with precision +/-1 the coordinate is correctly displayed as 36N 18W when clicking edit, the input field is set to 36N 18W when clicking save (without changing the value), the new value is 36N 18W. This way, the original value of 36.1234N 17.567W is lost. There is not even an obvious way to ever see it in the user interface. Expected behavior: when clicking edit, the input field is set to the value as originally entered, 36.1234N 17.567W. This would however require the value to be represented as decimal degrees, instead of the more commonly understood DMS format. Proposal: when formatting for use in the input field, ignore the precision stored in the value, and derive it solely from the number of digits given. Gehel added a comment. An early report based on GC logs is available. This report analyses only 14h of data, so no hard conclusions yet. Still, a few things to note: We use G1, I have not much experience with it, I need to learn! Over the period analysed, we rarely go over 8Go of heap after GC. This tends to indicate that 16Go is overkill and probably has negative influence on throughput. More data is needed to validate this hypothesis. Over the period analysed, we have an average allocation rate of ~400Mo/sec. This is high! Not crazy high, but still high. I suspect that some of the issues we have seen might be related to increase activity (user traffic, updates, ...) which would increase the allocation rate to something higher than what the GC can cope with. This is pure speculation at this point. This is bad news, as it looks like this might become our bottleneck and there is no easy way to overcome memory throughput issues.
